The fastest reliable way to get a Totem of Undying is to defeat an evoker. Evokers appear in woodland mansions and raids, and each evoker that leads a raid drops one totem when killed. To use it, place the totem in your main hand or off-hand before a hit that would otherwise kill you. It activates once, prevents that death, and is consumed.
What the Totem of Undying does
A Totem of Undying is a one-use survival item. If you are holding it when fatal damage arrives, the totem activates instead of allowing you to die. The item is consumed during that activation, so it is not a permanent increase to your health and it cannot protect you repeatedly without another totem.
Minecraft describes the item as a relic that “springs into action when you receive fatal damage to grant you a last-minute reprieve.” That wording captures the important limitation: the totem must already be in a hand at the instant the fatal damage is applied. Carrying one somewhere in your inventory is not enough.
The item was added in Minecraft’s Exploration Update in 2016. It remains most valuable when the cost of dying is high: exploring a dangerous structure, fighting through a raid, carrying valuable equipment, or attempting a risky recovery.

Where Totems of Undying come from
Evokers are the source of Totems of Undying. There are two practical ways to encounter them:
- Woodland mansion: Find a mansion, explore it, and defeat the evokers inside. Evokers can appear on upper floors, so clearing only the entrance level can leave the most important threat undiscovered.
- Raid: Start and complete raids, then kill the evokers that spawn as raid leaders. The official Minecraft inventory article states that evokers leading raids always drop a single Totem of Undying when they die.
These routes serve different purposes. A mansion is an exploration objective that may provide an initial totem but is not a repeatable supply route after its evokers have been defeated. Raids are renewable: once you can safely start and finish them, you can repeat the activity to obtain more totems. Raid composition depends on the Minecraft edition and difficulty; the cited advancement guidance lists evokers, vexes and witches in raids on Normal and Hard difficulties.

Woodland mansion route
1. Locate and reach a mansion
A woodland mansion is the exploration route to a Totem of Undying. The travel itself can be a major part of the danger, because a mansion may be far from your base and the structure contains multiple rooms and floors. Bring enough supplies for the journey and for a prolonged interior fight rather than treating the mansion as a short visit.
2. Clear the structure methodically
Evokers can appear on upper floors. Work through the building room by room, keep an escape route in mind, and avoid rushing into a large room before you can identify the attackers. A reliable weapon, strong armor and sufficient food are the basic preparation recommended for evoker combat. A retreat plan matters because evokers can summon vexes, which can pursue you through spaces where ordinary melee enemies would be easier to control.
3. Defeat every evoker you find
The totem is obtained from the evoker, not from a chest or from simply discovering the mansion. Confirm that the evoker has been killed before moving on. If you leave after defeating other mansion mobs, you may miss an evoker on another floor and leave the structure without the item you came for.

4. Secure the drop before continuing
Once the evoker is defeated, collect the dropped totem and move it to a safe inventory slot. If you expect another dangerous fight immediately, put it in the hand you intend to use before entering the next room. A totem in your inventory does not activate automatically when it is not held.
Raid route: the renewable method
Why raids are the repeatable option
Raids can be started again, so they provide a renewable source of evokers and totems. The trade-off is that a raid puts you in a sustained combat event rather than a single structure encounter. You must protect yourself through multiple waves and locate the evokers among the other raid mobs.
Choose a supported difficulty
Raid mob composition is difficulty-sensitive and can differ by edition. The referenced advancement guide identifies evokers, vexes and witches in raids on Normal and Hard. Do not assume that every difficulty produces the same enemies or the same opportunity to obtain a totem. Check the rules for the edition and version you are playing before planning a farm or a guaranteed yield.
Prepare before starting the raid
- Wear your strongest dependable armor rather than equipment you cannot afford to lose.
- Carry a weapon that lets you deal with an evoker quickly once you identify it.
- Bring enough food for a prolonged engagement.
- Choose a retreat path and a place where you can recover if vexes or several raid mobs reach you at once.
- Keep at least one totem accessible before the raid begins if the event is a deliberate test of your survival setup.
Find and kill the evokers
Evokers are dangerous because they combine ranged attacks with summoned vexes and a ground-fang attack. The official Evoker article explains that these attacks are intended to force movement rather than let a player stand still behind a shield. Keep moving, create space, and prioritize the evoker when you can do so without being surrounded.
When an evoker leading a raid dies, it drops one Totem of Undying. Collect the drop before the next engagement if the area is safe. Because raids are repeatable, this route is the practical choice for building a reserve once you can complete it consistently.

Woodland mansion or raid: which route should you choose?

If you have not obtained a totem before, a mansion may be the first route you encounter naturally. If you need several totems for repeated high-risk activities, a raid is the route to develop because it can be repeated.
How to use a Totem of Undying
1. Hold it before the dangerous hit
Move the totem into either your main hand or your off-hand before taking the risk. The Minecraft Wiki guide documents both hand slots, while an official Minecraft article specifically explains the off-hand use. The critical condition is not which hand you choose; it is that the totem is being held when the otherwise fatal damage arrives.
2. Make sure the hand choice fits your equipment
In Java Edition, placing a totem in the off-hand competes with a shield for that slot. You cannot equip both there at the same time. Decide whether the encounter rewards the shield’s defensive use or the totem’s one-time death prevention, and change the off-hand before the attack rather than waiting for the final moment.
3. Let the activation happen
When fatal damage is applied while the totem is held, it activates and prevents that death once. It is consumed immediately. Afterward, the hand no longer contains that totem, so a second fatal hit requires another one.
4. Carry spares for repeated danger
One totem protects against one fatal event. For a raid, mansion expedition or other activity with several independent ways to die, carry additional totems and keep them reachable. A spare in your inventory is useful for replacing an activated totem, but remember to move the replacement into a hand before the next fatal hit.

How evoker attacks affect your preparation
Evokers are not ordinary melee opponents. They summon vexes and use a fang attack that emerges from the ground. Those abilities make positioning important and explain why simply standing still with a shield is not always safe. Jens, identified by Minecraft as chief creative officer, described the design goal this way: “I wanted to force players to move around and not just stand with a shield and wait.”
Use terrain and distance to avoid being pinned, but do not retreat so far that you lose track of the evoker or the totem drop. If vexes are active, prioritize survival and a clear route out over collecting every other item immediately. Once the evoker is dead and the area is safe, retrieve the totem and reorganize your hand and inventory.

- Armor: Use your strongest reliable set for the expedition.
- Weapon: Bring a weapon you can use accurately under pressure.
- Food: Carry enough to recover through an extended encounter.
- Movement: Leave yourself room to react to vexes and ground-fang attacks.
- Exit plan: Know where you will retreat before entering a room or starting a raid.
- Hand management: Put the totem in the selected hand before the dangerous phase begins.
Testing a totem safely
The achievement guidance for the item advises holding it before deliberately taking fatal damage to verify that it works. If you test that advice, do it only in a controlled location with a spare totem and no valuable gear at risk. The purpose of a test is to confirm your hand placement and your edition’s behavior, not to waste the only totem you own in an uncontrolled fight.
After the activation, check that the item was consumed and immediately replace it if you are continuing into danger. Treat the first successful activation as proof that the setup worked once, not as protection for the rest of the expedition.

“I had a totem in my inventory, but I still died.”
The item must be held in the main hand or off-hand when fatal damage arrives. Move it into a hand before the dangerous action. Keeping it in another inventory slot does not satisfy the activation condition.

“I cannot use a totem and my shield together.”
In Java Edition, the off-hand slot cannot contain both items. Choose the protection that suits the encounter, or use the main hand for the totem if that control arrangement is practical for you.

A totem comes from an evoker. Search the entire structure, including upper floors, and confirm that every evoker you encounter has been defeated. Discovering the mansion or defeating its other inhabitants does not produce the item.
“My raid did not produce an evoker.”
Raid composition varies with edition and difficulty. The cited guidance lists evokers on Normal and Hard, so verify the difficulty and version rules for your world instead of assuming every raid configuration is identical.
“The totem activated, but I died soon afterward.”
Activation prevents one fatal event and consumes the item. It does not provide a second automatic save. Create distance, recover, and equip another totem before continuing if another fatal hit is plausible.
“I killed an evoker but cannot find the drop.”
Secure the area first, especially if vexes remain active. Then search around the death location and collect the item before moving on. Leaving immediately can make a valuable drop difficult to recover.

The core rule is stable across the cited guidance: defeat evokers to obtain totems, and hold one in a hand to trigger its one-time protection. Details beyond that core rule can be version-sensitive. Raid composition is difficulty- and edition-dependent, and the exact post-activation effects and their durations were not established consistently enough to present as a universal table here.
When planning a technical raid farm or a deliberately measured survival test, check the documentation for your exact Minecraft edition and version. Do not use a figure from one edition as a guaranteed result in another, and do not assume a raid always produces a fixed number of evokers.

- Identify whether you are using a woodland mansion or a raid.
- For a mansion, search all floors, including upper floors, for evokers.
- For a raid, confirm the difficulty and edition rules that determine whether evokers spawn.
- Bring strong armor, a reliable weapon, food and a retreat plan.

- Collect the totem after killing the evoker.
- Place the totem in your main hand or off-hand before the dangerous hit.
- In Java Edition, account for the off-hand conflict between a shield and a totem.
- Carry spares when the activity contains more than one serious death risk.
- After activation, replace the consumed totem before entering another dangerous situation.
Bottom line for choosing your route
Use a woodland mansion if you are exploring and need your first evoker encounter. Build toward raids if you want a renewable supply. Whichever route you choose, the decisive usage rule is simple: the Totem of Undying must be in your main hand or off-hand before fatal damage arrives. It saves you once, disappears when it works, and should be treated as a planned emergency resource rather than a passive inventory item.
