If Total War: WARHAMMER III lets you play normally but will not let you join a multiplayer lobby, start with the three checks below. The most common causes are a mismatched game build, an outdated mod, damaged files after an update, or software blocking Steam’s network traffic.
Use the fixes in order. After each one, restart the game and try joining the same lobby again.
1. Put every player on the same version and disable mods
Multiplayer clients must be running the same live version. A player who has selected a rollback or beta branch may be unable to join someone using the normal release. Mods can cause the same result, particularly after a patch.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Total War: WARHAMMER III and choose Properties.
- Open Game Versions & Betas.
- Set the branch to Default Public Version.
- Close the Properties window and allow Steam to download any required update.
Do this for every player in the campaign. Do not use the older instruction to select None; SEGA’s current instructions use Default Public Version.

Next, disable every Steam Workshop mod and remove other modifications made to the game’s program files. Test an unmodded campaign before re-enabling anything. A mod can be flagged as outdated even when it worked before the game updated.
This is especially relevant after Crossplay Patch 7.2.1, released on April 21, 2026. That update changed the version number to preserve crossplay compatibility but made no gameplay changes. Its version-number change could still make mods appear outdated. The patch notes recommend verifying the installation after updating; you can find them on SteamDB.
If you are playing through Game Pass and the problem occurs only in cross-platform co-op, try changing your Xbox profile picture to a default Xbox image:
- Open your Xbox profile.
- Select Customize and then Change gamerpic.
- Choose a default Xbox image.
- Select OK, then Save.
- Relaunch WARHAMMER III and try the lobby again.
This workaround applies to a documented issue in which a custom Xbox profile picture can interfere with cross-platform co-op connections.

2. Verify WARHAMMER III’s Steam files
A failed or incomplete update can leave one client unable to join multiplayer even though the game still starts. Verify the installation after a patch, especially if the error began immediately after updating.
- Open Steam Library.
- Right-click Total War: WARHAMMER III and select Properties.
- Choose Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files….
- Wait for Steam to finish checking and replace any damaged or missing files.
The current Steam label is Installed Files. Older guides may call this tab Local files, but that is not the current menu wording.
Steam may report that one or more files failed to verify. That does not always mean the installation is still damaged: local configuration files can commonly fail the check without making the game unusable. Let Steam complete the process, restart it, and test multiplayer.

SEGA’s WARHAMMER III Steam troubleshooting guide includes a procedure for backing up and removing those files. Follow that procedure rather than deleting folders at random, because it can affect settings and other local data.

Hotfix 7.2.2, released May 7, 2026, addressed startup crashes when online services were unavailable by allowing the game to boot in offline mode. That change can help the game start, but it does not restore multiplayer while the required online services are unavailable. Its patch notes are available on SteamDB.
3. Remove Steam, firewall, antivirus, and overlay blocks
Security software can allow WARHAMMER III to launch while blocking the connection needed to find or join a campaign. Add both Steam and the game to your antivirus and firewall allowlists.
For a temporary diagnostic test, disable the firewall or antivirus, launch the game, and try multiplayer. If joining works, turn the protection back on immediately and create permanent exclusions for Steam and WARHAMMER III. Do not leave the firewall disabled as a permanent fix.
Steam’s recommended firewall reset sequence is:
- Close Steam completely.
- Remove existing firewall permission entries for
steaminstall.exe,steam.exe,hl.exe,hl2.exe, andsteamTmp.exe. - Restart Steam.
- Allow
steam.exewhen Windows or your security software asks for permission. - Grant Steam access on all TCP and UDP ports requested by the firewall.
- Restart the computer and Steam, then test the lobby.
Also test without the Steam overlay:
- Open Steam Library.
- Right-click Total War: WARHAMMER III and select Properties.
- Stay on General.
- Turn off Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
- Launch the game and try to join again.
Use a stable broadband connection for multiplayer. The game’s manual states that dial-up connections are unsuitable. If other online games also fail, restart the router and check whether your network, VPN, or security software is blocking Steam rather than focusing only on WARHAMMER III.

Supported Steam environment
Steam’s technical support page for WARHAMMER III states that the Steam Client supports Windows 10 and later starting January 1, 2024. Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 should not be treated as currently supported Steam environments for this game.

FAQ
Why can’t I join a WARHAMMER III multiplayer game after an update?
Your game may be on a different branch, or a mod may not support the new version. Set Steam’s Game Versions & Betas selection to Default Public Version for every player, disable all mods, and verify the game files.
Should I select None in WARHAMMER III’s beta settings?
SEGA’s current Steam instructions say to select Default Public Version under Game Versions & Betas. The None label appears in older or different Steam instructions.
What does it mean if Steam says files failed to verify?
It is not automatically proof of a broken installation. Steam can report local configuration files as failing verification while the game remains usable. Restart Steam after the check and test multiplayer.

Can antivirus software stop me joining a WARHAMMER III lobby?
Yes. Firewall or antivirus software may allow the game to launch while blocking Steam or the game’s network traffic. Add Steam and WARHAMMER III to the allowed-app or exclusions lists, and only disable protection temporarily for testing.
Does WARHAMMER III’s offline mode fix multiplayer?
No. Hotfix 7.2.2 allows the game to start successfully when online services are unavailable, but multiplayer still requires those services to be working.
The Bottom Line
First synchronize every player on Default Public Version and test with all mods disabled. Then run Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files…. If the lobby still cannot be joined, check firewall, antivirus, overlay, and broadband connection blocks. Game Pass players with a cross-platform co-op problem should also replace a custom Xbox gamerpic with a default image before retrying.
