In one sentence: Total War: SHOGUN 2 is a Sengoku-era campaign about rival clans, samurai, bows and cavalry fighting to unite Japan; Fall of the Samurai is a separate Boshin War campaign in which industrial weapons, steam-powered fleets and artillery transform the battlefield. You do not need to complete the original campaign to play Fall, but the current Complete Edition and its storefront contents are important if you are buying today.

The practical difference at a glance

Question Total War: SHOGUN 2 Fall of the Samurai
Historical conflict Sengoku Jidai: competing clans attempt to unite Japan. Boshin War: a civil conflict during Japan’s transition toward industrial, modern warfare.
Typical battlefield identity Swords, bows, cavalry and other traditional arms dominate. Guns, artillery and Gatling guns make exposure and positioning much more dangerous.
Campaign relationship The original campaign and game. A separate campaign with its own start flow and clan selection; it is not a mission pack that requires a finished SHOGUN 2 save.
Naval and artillery emphasis The official material reviewed here does not provide a complete feature list for a direct, feature-by-feature comparison. Steam-powered ships, ironclads, naval fire support and direct first-person control of artillery or ships are documented.
Current buying route The standalone Steam sale ended on September 28, 2026; existing owners retain access. Included in the Complete Edition, whose storefront contents vary by platform.

The setting is therefore not a cosmetic change. It changes what wins battles. In SHOGUN 2, a well-timed charge, a protected archer line and disciplined samurai formation express the warfare of the Sengoku Jidai. In Fall, a formation that would have survived arrows or blades can be shredded by rifle volleys and field guns before it reaches the enemy.

Two different moments in Japanese history

SHOGUN 2: the Sengoku Jidai

SEGA describes SHOGUN 2 as a struggle to unite Japan during the Sengoku Jidai, a period defined in the game by diplomacy, betrayal and conquest. You choose a clan and compete for political and military dominance while other powers negotiate, betray alliances and contest territory. The campaign’s identity comes from traditional clan warfare rather than from an industrial revolution.

That setting supports a recognizable samurai-era battlefield: melee infantry, disciplined sword units, bow units and mounted troops matter because close combat and maneuver decide when and where lines break. The game’s strategic question is usually how to combine those arms and protect them long enough to exploit a weakness, not how to stop a modern battery from deleting a compact formation.

Fall of the Samurai: the Boshin War

Fall moves to the Boshin War and frames the conflict as a collision between tradition and industrialisation. The campaign still uses Japanese factions, diplomacy and territorial war, but the political and technological context is different: modern weapons are entering a conflict that still contains samurai-era forces.

Feral Interactive’s manual states the contrast directly: “Total War: SHOGUN 2 was set during a time when swords, bows and horsemen dominated the battlefield. Warfare in A Total War Saga: FALL OF THE SAMURAI is a somewhat different proposition: modern guns and artillery have little respect for courage and honor.” The sentence is a description of the games’ design contrast from the official manual, not a claim that every unit in Fall is modern or that traditional troops disappear.

Why the historical gap changes the strategy

SHOGUN 2 asks you to master the relationships among traditional arms. Fall asks you to manage a transitional army in which traditional units and industrial weapons coexist. That creates different priorities for deployment, movement and timing. A player attracted to clan rivalries and classic samurai formations will find the original campaign more directly aligned with that interest. A player interested in the moment when firearms, artillery and steam technology begin to dominate will find Fall’s premise more relevant.

How the battlefield technology differs

Traditional arms in SHOGUN 2

The official comparison material characterizes SHOGUN 2’s era through swords, bows and horsemen. Those categories imply a battlefield where range, morale, charge timing and melee contact are central. You can still lose a battle through poor positioning, but the threat usually develops over the time it takes units to approach, exchange missiles or commit to a charge.

This does not mean the original campaign is technologically simple. Its depth comes from how traditional units support one another and how a commander uses terrain, flanking and morale. The important distinction is the period’s military character: the core tools are recognizably pre-industrial rather than the rifle-and-artillery systems foregrounded in Fall.

Firearms, artillery and Gatling guns in Fall

Fall foregrounds modern guns and artillery, including Gatling guns. These weapons change the cost of standing in the open and make the approach to an enemy position a problem in itself. A melee unit may still be valuable, but sending it forward without suppressing or bypassing firearms can produce losses before contact.

Artillery also changes how you read terrain. In the original campaign, high ground and defensive positions are valuable for visibility and formation control. In Fall, those positions can additionally become firing platforms or targets for long-range bombardment. The result is a more explicit relationship between line of sight, range, cover and the timing of an advance.

Mixed-era forces

Fall does not force a clean choice between “samurai” and “modern.” The manual explains that Boshin-era land units can be mixed with SHOGUN 2 units in battles. That lets the campaign represent the transition historically and gives you a practical combined-arms problem: traditional troops and modern units can occupy different roles instead of being isolated into separate games.

The coexistence also explains why Fall can feel familiar to a SHOGUN 2 player while still demanding new habits. The campaign retains the broad Total War structure of armies, battles and territory, but the presence of firearms and artillery changes which formations are safe, how quickly an attack can collapse and when a melee commitment is sensible.

Naval combat and direct gunnery are much more prominent in Fall

The official Fall manual documents several naval and artillery features that define its modern-war identity:

  • Many modern vessels are steam-powered.
  • Ironclads resist most attacks from traditional vessels, making them a fundamentally different naval threat.
  • Nearby fleets can provide naval fire support during land battles.
  • You can directly operate an artillery unit or a ship and fire in a first-person mode.
  • Up to 40 units may be controlled in a battle.

These are not merely visual additions. Naval fire support links the campaign map, fleets and land battles: a nearby fleet can influence an engagement without being treated as a separate, disconnected minigame. Direct gunnery also gives you an active role in placing or firing certain weapons instead of leaving every shot to an abstract calculation.

The manual cautions that the two eras’ ships cannot fight each other in the same way because the matchup would be unfair. That limitation is important when interpreting “mixed eras.” Fall allows Boshin-era land units to operate alongside SHOGUN 2 units, but it does not present every old and new ship as an evenly balanced naval roster.

The reviewed official material does not provide a complete, symmetric list of every naval and artillery feature in the base SHOGUN 2 campaign. It is therefore safer to describe Fall’s documented systems than to claim that the original has an equivalent or opposite set of mechanics.

Is Fall of the Samurai a DLC, a sequel or a standalone campaign?

For a player deciding what to launch, Fall is its own campaign experience. The Feral manual shows a separate Fall campaign start screen and clan-selection flow, and current SEGA materials package it as one of three standalone campaigns in the Complete Edition. You do not need to finish the Sengoku campaign first, and Fall is not simply a later chapter loaded from an SHOGUN 2 save.

It is still closely related to SHOGUN 2 in structure and presentation. The campaigns share the broad Total War framework, and Fall can use SHOGUN 2 units in battles alongside its Boshin-era units. “Standalone campaign” describes how you play it; it does not mean the two games have unrelated technology or controls.

SEGA’s September 16, 2026 announcement describes the Complete Edition as containing three standalone campaigns spanning more than 700 years of Japanese history: SHOGUN 2’s Sengoku Jidai, Rise of the Samurai’s Genpei War and Fall of the Samurai’s Boshin War. The “more than 700 years” figure describes the historical scope of the collection, not the number of years in one campaign.

Buying the current Complete Edition: dates and storefront differences

The purchase question changed in 2026. SEGA’s FAQ scheduled the Complete Edition’s PC launch for October 13, 2026 at 16:00 BST, 08:00 PDT, 23:00 CST and 00:00 JST on October 14. The announcement date was September 16, 2026. Because the current date is October 16, 2026, that announced launch window has passed; check the store page for the live listing and regional availability.

Storefront What the FAQ says is included What that means for a buyer
Steam The Complete Edition, the original SHOGUN 2 and associated DLC, except the Blood Pack because of age-rating restrictions. This is the broadest documented bundle if you want both the updated collection and the legacy game content in one Steam purchase.
Epic Games Store Complete Edition only. Do not assume the Steam bundle’s legacy-game contents transfer to this storefront.
Microsoft Store Complete Edition only. The listed package differs from Steam’s contents.
GOG Complete Edition only. Again, the FAQ does not describe the additional original-game bundle listed for Steam.

The official FAQ is the controlling reference for those contents: SEGA’s Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition FAQ. Store listings can display regional wording, ratings or availability differently, so verify the exact platform before paying.

What happened to the standalone Steam game?

SHOGUN 2 stopped being available as a standalone Steam purchase at 16:00 UTC on September 28, 2026. The Steam page remains, and existing owners can continue to play the original game. The FAQ also says existing owners will receive any missing original DLC at no cost. That is a rights and access distinction: retaining the legacy game does not automatically mean that the legacy installation has become the Complete Edition.

Which edition should an existing owner use?

If you already own SHOGUN 2, keep the original installation when you need compatibility with its existing mod setup or want to preserve the legacy version. Install the Complete Edition when you want its updated presentation, expanded faction selection and new platform features. Treat them as separate versions rather than assuming an old modded installation will upgrade without consequences.

Complete Edition upgrades and the mod-compatibility warning

The Complete Edition is described as an updated version rather than a simple content bundle. SEGA lists these changes:

  • Improved visuals.
  • User-interface scaling for 1440p and 4K displays.
  • Modernised controls.
  • Japanese and Chinese voice acting with full text localisation.
  • More than 50 newly playable minor factions.
  • Mod.io support.
  • A 64-bit upgrade.

The compatibility rule is decisive for mod users: original SHOGUN 2 mods are not compatible with the Complete Edition. Mods for the original game remain unchanged for that version. Before moving a heavily modded campaign, list the mods you rely on and check whether equivalent Complete Edition versions exist; do not assume that a launcher migration will preserve them.

The 64-bit upgrade and higher-resolution interface support address modern PC environments, while the added voice and text localisation options affect presentation and accessibility. None of these upgrades changes the historical identity of the two campaigns: SHOGUN 2 remains Sengoku Jidai warfare, and Fall remains the Boshin-era transition to modern warfare.

Choose by the kind of warfare you want to play

Choose SHOGUN 2 when you want traditional clan warfare

  • You want the Sengoku Jidai struggle to unite Japan to be the central story.
  • You prefer swords, bows and horsemen as the defining battlefield tools.
  • You enjoy solving battles through formation discipline, cavalry timing, missile support and melee engagements.
  • You are maintaining an established original-game mod setup.

This recommendation is about thematic and mechanical fit, not a claim that SHOGUN 2 is objectively easier, better or more historically important.

Best Value
Shogun 2: Fall of the Samurai, Limited Edition - PC
  • The American, British and French nations played an important part in the story of the Boshin war and your relations with these foreign powers will be integral to unit recruitment and to advancing your technology trees.
  • Thirty nine new land units, including modern ranged units - such as the Gatling gun and Armstrong gun - controllable in a new third-person mode.
  • New port siege battle type, this new battle type triggers when attempting a naval assault on an occupied enemy port. The attacking fleet must sail into the harbour and capture the port, running the gauntlet of coastal gun defences.
  • New land and sea unit interactions, during a land battle, armies can call in offshore artillery support barrages.
  • Campaign map bombardments: offshore naval units can bombard armies and cities in adjacent coastal areas on the campaign map itself.

Choose Fall when you want the transition to industrial warfare

  • You are interested in the Boshin War and the conflict between tradition and industrialisation.
  • You want guns, artillery and Gatling guns to reshape battlefield decisions.
  • You are drawn to steam-powered ships, ironclads, naval fire support and direct gunnery.
  • You want a separate campaign start and clan selection rather than a continuation of an existing SHOGUN 2 save.

Fall is the closer match for a player who wants the familiar Total War campaign structure with a much stronger modern-firepower component.

Choose the Complete Edition when you are starting fresh

For a new PC buyer, the Complete Edition is the practical starting point because the standalone Steam sale has ended and Fall is included in the current collection. Compare the storefront contents before checkout: Steam’s documented package includes the original game and associated DLC with the Blood Pack exception, while Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store and GOG list the Complete Edition only.

A simple decision path

  1. Decide which era attracts you. Pick Sengoku Jidai clan unification for SHOGUN 2, or the Boshin War and industrial transition for Fall.
  2. Decide how you want battles to be won. Choose traditional melee, bows and cavalry for SHOGUN 2; choose firearms, artillery, naval support and steam-era ships for Fall.
  3. Check whether you need the legacy game. If you need the original SHOGUN 2 executable or its existing mods, confirm that your chosen storefront provides or preserves it.
  4. Check the storefront contents. Steam’s package is documented differently from Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store and GOG.
  5. Protect your mods. Keep the original installation and its mod profile separate from the Complete Edition, whose mods are not compatible with original SHOGUN 2 mods.

What the official material does—and does not—establish

The official pages establish the historical settings, the broad weapons contrast, Fall’s standalone campaign flow, its documented naval and artillery mechanics, the Complete Edition’s campaign lineup and the storefront rules. They do not provide a complete unit-by-unit comparison, a performance benchmark across modern hardware, or a universal verdict on difficulty. Those questions depend on the specific faction, battle, settings and mod configuration.

The only sales figure supplied for the 2026 announcement is franchise-wide: SEGA says the Total War series has sold more than 48.3 million copies. That is not a sales count for SHOGUN 2 or Fall and should not be used to rank the two campaigns.

Bottom line

SHOGUN 2 and Fall of the Samurai are best understood as two campaigns built around different military eras. SHOGUN 2 is the traditional Sengoku contest of clans, swords, bows and horsemen. Fall is the Boshin War viewed through the shock of rifles, artillery, Gatling guns, steam-powered ships and ironclads. Fall has its own campaign flow, so it does not require a completed SHOGUN 2 campaign. For a new buyer in October 2026, compare the Complete Edition’s storefront contents—especially Steam’s inclusion of the original game and associated DLC, excluding the Blood Pack—and remember that original SHOGUN 2 mods do not work with the updated Complete Edition.

For primary purchasing and compatibility details, use the official Complete Edition FAQ. For the historical framing and collection announcement, see SEGA’s September 16, 2026 release announcement. For the documented Fall mechanics, consult Feral Interactive’s official manual.
