Edition and storefront determine what you receive in Total War: SHOGUN 2. Since October 13, 2026, the Complete Edition has been available on Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store and GOG. Steam buyers receive both Complete Edition and the original game with associated legacy DLC except the Blood Pack; the other listed storefronts sell Complete Edition only. The original game stopped being sold separately on Steam on September 28, 2026.
This guide explains what existing owners keep, how legacy DLC behaves, which multiplayer setups are supported, and why mods made for the original release do not work in Complete Edition.

What changed with the 2026 Complete Edition?
SEGA launched Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition on October 13, 2026, for Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store and GOG. The release does not create one universal package across every store. Your storefront and ownership history determine which games and add-ons appear in your account.
Standalone Steam sales of the original SHOGUN 2 ended on September 28, 2026. The original title remains playable for people who already own it, and new Steam purchasers receive it through the Complete Edition bundle. A purchase from Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store or GOG provides Complete Edition only, not the separate legacy executable.

Store listings and account entitlements can change, so check the final product description shown in your region before paying. The official launch information lists prices in pounds, euros and US dollars, but regional pricing and later changes mean a figure should not be treated as universal.
What should existing owners do?
If you already owned the original SHOGUN 2 on Steam, SEGA says you keep that legacy game. You also receive legacy DLC that is missing from your account at no additional cost. In addition, existing owners are eligible for a time-limited 75% loyalty discount when upgrading to Complete Edition.
The discount is an account entitlement, not a promise that every store or every account will show the same offer forever. Open your Steam account and inspect the Complete Edition purchase page before buying; confirm which DLC has already been granted and whether the loyalty price is still displayed. Do not buy a second copy of a legacy pack until your library and downloadable-content list finish updating.

Total War: SHOGUN 2 combines a turn-based strategic map with battles that play in real time. The Steam feature description highlights land and sea battles, general and agent skill development, multi-stage sieges, hero units and a rotatable three-dimensional campaign map. Those are publisher and store-description features rather than results from an independent performance or balance test.
Grand campaign
The main campaign asks you to manage a clan on the strategic map: expand territory, develop settlements, move armies and fleets, and use agents and generals while turns advance. Battles then switch to a real-time battlefield where positioning, morale and unit orders determine the result.

- Brand New in box. The product ships with all relevant accessories
Rise of the Samurai
Rise of the Samurai is a separate campaign rather than a toggle inside the standard campaign. In the legacy game, select it from its own campaign entry on the campaign-selection screen. Its separate menu is why installing the pack does not make its factions appear automatically in a normal campaign.
Sieges, heroes and naval action
Sieges can involve multiple stages, while hero units provide specialized battlefield capabilities. Fleets fight at sea instead of using the land-battle interface. These systems make campaign planning and tactical battles distinct parts of the same turn cycle.

Feral’s Steam instructions describe a two-player campaign. Both players should be signed in to Steam, own compatible versions and finish any required updates before creating the session.
- From the main menu, choose Multiplayer.
- Select Multiplayer Campaign.
- The host chooses Host Campaign.
- Set the campaign options and start the lobby.
- Use the Steam friend-invite option if you want to invite a specific friend, or wait for the other player to select the listed campaign.
- The second player opens the multiplayer campaign list, selects the host’s session and joins.
To continue a saved campaign, the original participants must be the players returning to it, and the original host must resume the save as host. A different participant or a different host cannot be assumed to have the same recovery path.
Battle-resolution conflicts
Each player may choose a battle-resolution preference. If those choices differ, the host’s Default Battle Resolution setting determines which option takes precedence. Agree on that setting before launching a cooperative campaign if you want predictable handling of battles that one player would otherwise resolve automatically.

- Choose from 9 different clans and compete on and offline for the undisputed supremacy of Medieval Japan. Gain experience to level up your own character-warlord as well as your generals and agents.
- Play through the Main Campaign in single player or invite a friend online to play competitively or cooperatively in Campaign Multiplayer mode.
- Developed according to Sun Tzu's principles in the Art of War, the Artificial Intelligence constantly analyzes its situation and reacts to your every move with greater precision and variety.
- A streamlined User Interface makes management of your kingdom much easier. Build and govern cities, recruit and train troops, conduct diplomacy and manage your agents - each feature is now introduced with comprehensive tutorials
Linux and local-network campaigns
Feral’s Linux FAQ documents LAN play through the Local Network campaign list. A Linux host creates the campaign there, and the other Linux player joins from the same list. The FAQ states that multiplayer is compatible between Linux versions only. It does not establish Windows-to-Linux or macOS-to-Linux compatibility, so do not treat the LAN instructions as evidence of cross-platform support.
What the official instructions do not establish
The available official pages explain how to host and join sessions, but they do not provide current player counts, matchmaking activity, latency guarantees or a claim that every present-day connection will be reliable. Those conditions can vary by platform, network and time.
How DLC is obtained and enabled
Legacy DLC behavior is documented separately from Complete Edition’s storefront contents. Do not assume that a pack listed in an old collection description is included in every 2026 purchase.
Legacy packs listed by Feral
- Blood Pack
- Dragon War Battle Pack
- Hattori Clan Pack
- Ikko Ikki Clan Pack
- Otomo Clan Pack
- Rise of the Samurai Campaign
- Saints and Heroes
- Sengoku Jidai
Feral’s older collection description lists the same legacy set except the Blood Pack. SEGA’s Complete Edition FAQ separately states that the Steam bundle excludes Blood Pack, so treat Blood as a separate entitlement unless your account explicitly shows otherwise.
Automatic activation and manual options
Most purchased legacy DLC is enabled automatically after installation. Blood effects are different: in the legacy game, open Options and enable the Blood Effects checkbox. The effect is a setting, not a separate campaign selection.
Rank #4
Rise of the Samurai is accessed from its distinct campaign choice on the campaign menu. If the pack appears in your downloadable-content list but you cannot find its factions in the standard campaign, open that separate campaign entry rather than reinstalling the same files.
Mods: original game versus Complete Edition
Complete Edition launches with integrated Mod.IO support. That does not make it a drop-in replacement for the original game’s mod ecosystem: SEGA explicitly says mods made for original SHOGUN 2 are not compatible with Complete Edition. Original-game mods remain unchanged for players who continue using the legacy release.
| Your installed game | Use these mods | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Original SHOGUN 2 | Mods built for the original release | Compatibility with Complete Edition |
| Complete Edition | Mods delivered through its integrated Mod.IO support and identified for that edition | Compatibility with legacy Workshop or other original-game packages |
Before installing anything, verify the executable and edition shown in your library. If a mod author has not stated Complete Edition compatibility, treat the mod as unverified. The official material does not provide a maintained list of currently supported mods or identify specific mod authors, so named recommendations cannot be confirmed here.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.System requirements and operating-system caveats
Steam lists legacy storage requirements of 32 GB for Windows, 24 GB for macOS and 26 GB for Linux, along with older operating-system and hardware minimums. These figures describe the listed legacy build; they are not a guarantee that a current operating-system update, graphics driver or modern Apple configuration will run the game correctly.
Steam also states that the Steam Client supports Windows 10 and later from January 1, 2024. That client policy is separate from the game’s older minimum specification. Leave additional disk space for updates and workshop or Mod.IO files, and check the current store listing for the exact edition you intend to install.
Best Value
- The American, British and French nations played an important part in the story of the Boshin war and your relations with these foreign powers will be integral to unit recruitment and to advancing your technology trees.
- Thirty nine new land units, including modern ranged units - such as the Gatling gun and Armstrong gun - controllable in a new third-person mode.
- New port siege battle type, this new battle type triggers when attempting a naval assault on an occupied enemy port. The attacking fleet must sail into the harbour and capture the port, running the gauntlet of coastal gun defences.
- New land and sea unit interactions, during a land battle, armies can call in offshore artillery support barrages.
- Campaign map bombardments: offshore naval units can bombard armies and cities in adjacent coastal areas on the campaign map itself.
Mac troubleshooting and support
When a Mac installation still fails after updates and basic configuration checks, Feral asks users to collect two items: the exact error message and a Total War SHOGUN 2 Report.txt file. Open the pre-game Options window, select the Support tab and use the reporting tools there, then provide the collected information to Feral support. This is a diagnostic workflow, not a guaranteed fix; the report helps support identify the specific configuration or launch failure.

| You already own original SHOGUN 2 on Steam | Check your library entitlements and loyalty offer first | Missing legacy DLC is granted at no cost, and a time-limited 75% upgrade discount may appear |
| Your priority is an original-game mod collection | Keep using the original installation | Original mods are not compatible with Complete Edition |
| Your priority is the new integrated mod service | Complete Edition | It launches with integrated Mod.IO support |
| You need Linux multiplayer | Coordinate with another Linux player on a compatible Linux build | Feral documents Linux multiplayer as compatible between Linux versions only |
FAQ
Can I still buy the original SHOGUN 2 separately on Steam?
No. Standalone Steam sales ended on September 28, 2026. Existing owners can continue playing it, and new Steam customers receive it through the Complete Edition purchase.
Does every Complete Edition storefront include the original game?
No. The original game is part of the Steam bundle, while the Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store and GOG listings include Complete Edition only.
Is Blood Pack automatically included with the Steam bundle?
SEGA’s Complete Edition FAQ says it is excluded. Check your account’s DLC list if you previously owned it or receive it through another entitlement.
Will my original Workshop mod load in Complete Edition?
Not on the basis of the official compatibility statement. SEGA says original SHOGUN 2 mods are incompatible with Complete Edition; use a package explicitly identified for the new edition instead.
Does Linux multiplayer work with Windows players?
The Linux FAQ specifies compatibility between Linux versions only. Official guidance does not establish Linux-to-Windows cross-play.
Where can I find current player-count or connection data?
The official setup pages do not publish current player counts, matchmaking activity or connection-reliability statistics. Treat those as changing conditions rather than guaranteed features.
