Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition looks like a substantial modernization of a much-loved strategy game, but its promised improvements still need hands-on verification. It bundles three campaigns with updated visuals, interface and controls, alongside more than 50 newly playable minor factions. The key trade-off for returning players is mod compatibility: mods made for the original game will not work with the Complete Edition. SEGA schedules the PC release for October 13, 2026 at 16:00 BST (October 14 in Japan), so this is a look at the announced edition—not a post-launch review.

What is Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition?

SEGA describes it as an updated PC version of Total War: SHOGUN 2 with its downloadable content. The package brings together three campaigns spanning more than 700 years of Japanese history: the original Sengoku Jidai campaign, Rise of the Samurai, set during the Genpei War, and Fall of the Samurai, set during the Boshin War and the clash between tradition and industrialisation. SEGA’s Complete Edition FAQ calls it an “updated and enhanced version” developed by MATABOO, Creative Assembly, and SEGA for PC.

The Complete Edition is more than a DLC bundle on paper: SEGA also lists changes to graphics, controls, display support, localization, accessibility, and mod access. Those are publisher-announced features, not independently verified results. There is no basis yet to judge how smoothly they work, whether the game has launch bugs, or how the new additions affect balance.

What is new beyond the campaigns?

SEGA’s announced update combines presentation and usability changes with additional playable factions. The publisher’s English feature list and Japanese overview do not describe every item identically; the table distinguishes features specifically listed in each source.

#1 Best Overall
Total War: Shogun 2

  • Play through the Main Campaign in single player or invite a friend online to play competitively or cooperatively in Campaign Multiplayer mode

  • Improved land and naval battle gameplay, now with the ability to combine forces and attacks
Change What SEGA says What it could mean for players
Graphics and effects Improved visuals, lighting, and shadows; SEGA Japan also lists refreshed textures and models, fog, and other environmental effects. The aim is to refresh the presentation. Image quality, frame rate, and performance on particular PCs have not been independently established.
Interface and display support UI scaling for 1440p and 4K, modernized controls, and a redesigned UI. SEGA Japan also lists ultrawide support and colourblind accessibility options. These changes target current displays and usability. The announcement does not establish how well the interface scales or how accessible the options are in practice.
Playable factions More than 50 newly playable minor factions. This promises more campaign choices, but the announcement alone does not show whether those factions have distinct mechanics or how they affect balance.
Localization and audio Japanese and Chinese voice and full-text localization. Players who want those language options have a specific announced addition; the feature list does not establish the quality of the localization.
Mod support and architecture Integrated Mod.io support and a 64-bit upgrade. Mod.io is a new access route, but original-game mods are incompatible. The 64-bit upgrade is an announced technical change, not evidence of a particular performance gain.
Cutscenes SEGA Japan lists an option for woodblock-inspired animated cutscenes. This is an optional presentation feature according to the Japanese overview.

Do the three campaigns and new factions make it worthwhile?

The package’s clearest strength is breadth. The main campaign offers the Sengoku Jidai setting; Rise of the Samurai shifts to the Genpei War; and Fall of the Samurai moves into the Boshin War, where traditional forces confront industrialisation. That gives the edition several historical settings and campaign contexts rather than simply repackaging one campaign with a visual update.

The extra minor factions could add replay options, but their number alone does not establish how different they feel to play. That distinction matters: campaign count and faction count describe available content, not its quality or variety in practice. PC Gamer’s September 2026 announcement coverage highlighted Fall of the Samurai, while GamesRadar+ placed the original game fourth in its 2025 selection of the best Total War games, praising its compact scope, clear unit roles, and castle sieges. Those are editorial assessments of the original game, not reviews of this edition.

Will the updated interface and controls be better on modern displays?

The announced UI scaling for 1440p and 4K directly addresses higher-resolution displays. SEGA Japan additionally lists ultrawide support, colourblind options, a redesigned UI, and modernized controls. If you play on one of those display types or want the listed accessibility options, those are relevant changes to look for.

Rank #3
Total War: Shogun 2 - PC
  • Choose from 9 different clans and compete on and offline for the undisputed supremacy of Medieval Japan. Gain experience to level up your own character-warlord as well as your generals and agents.
  • Play through the Main Campaign in single player or invite a friend online to play competitively or cooperatively in Campaign Multiplayer mode.
  • Developed according to Sun Tzu's principles in the Art of War, the Artificial Intelligence constantly analyzes its situation and reacts to your every move with greater precision and variety.
  • A streamlined User Interface makes management of your kingdom much easier. Build and govern cities, recruit and train troops, conduct diplomacy and manage your agents - each feature is now introduced with comprehensive tutorials

However, an announcement cannot answer whether text remains readable at different scaling settings, whether the redesigned interface makes common actions easier, or how the controls feel during a long campaign. No hands-on testing or post-launch performance data is established here. Treat “improved” as SEGA’s stated goal, not a verified verdict on usability or frame rates.

What should existing mod users know?

The most consequential caveat for established players is explicit: mods made for the original SHOGUN 2 are not compatible with the Complete Edition. The original game and its existing mods remain unchanged, according to SEGA. The Complete Edition adds integrated Mod.io support, but that does not preserve compatibility with a current original-game setup.

If your campaigns depend on specific original mods, keeping the original version may matter more than the new interface or display features. If you are willing to move to the new edition and rebuild around compatible mods, Mod.io is part of the announced package. SEGA’s FAQ does not establish how many mods will be available at launch.

Which edition and storefront should you choose?

SEGA lists Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store, and GOG for the PC release. The contents differ by storefront, so check the target store’s live listing before buying.

Buyer What SEGA says is included Important qualification
New Steam buyer The Complete Edition purchase also includes the original SHOGUN 2 and its associated DLC. The Blood Pack is excluded from that original-game inclusion because of age-rating considerations.
Buyer on Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store, or GOG The Complete Edition. The original game and its associated DLC are not stated as included on these storefronts.
Existing Steam owner of the original game SEGA says owners will receive original DLC they do not already own for free, and will have a time-limited 75% discount on the Complete Edition. The stated discount runs from October 13, 2026 at 16:00 BST until November 12, 2026 at 16:00 GMT. Check the Steam listing and SEGA FAQ for current eligibility and availability.

SEGA says the original game remains playable and existing owners’ copy is unchanged. Its standalone Steam sale listing ended September 28, 2026; the FAQ says new Steam purchasers instead get the game and DLC as part of the Complete Edition. These are SEGA’s stated arrangements; storefront terms and prices can change. Check the official FAQ and the store you intend to use before purchase.

Is it fair to call it the best Total War game?

“The best” is an editorial judgment, not an established fact. The original has strong historical endorsements: Steam showed 92% positive from 21,929 English reviews and 77% positive from 312 recent reviews when its page was accessed on October 12, 2026. These are changing user-review snapshots for the original game, not the Complete Edition; Steam excludes review periods it identifies as off-topic from its score calculation. View the original game’s Steam page.

SEGA’s announcement also states that the Total War series has sold 48.3 million copies cumulatively. That figure is for the series, not SHOGUN 2, the Complete Edition, or its preorders, so it does not demonstrate the sales or reception of this release. The more defensible case for the new edition is that it pairs a well-regarded original with three campaigns and a long list of promised updates. Whether those updates make it a better way to play depends on their shipped quality and the player’s mod needs.

Verdict: promising upgrade, with one major compatibility trade-off

For someone buying into SHOGUN 2 for the first time, the Complete Edition’s three campaigns and announced modern-display, control, and interface updates make it the most comprehensive package SEGA lists on PC. For a returning player, the decision is less automatic: the new features may be attractive, but original mods will not carry over, and the new edition’s hands-on performance and usability remain unverified before release. Choose based on the storefront’s included content and whether you are prepared to leave your original mod setup behind.
