Yes. Seeding sends data from your device to other torrent peers, so it uses your internet connection’s upload capacity. How much it sends depends on whether peers request pieces and how long you leave the torrent active; it is not automatically limited to the size of the downloaded file.
What seeding does to your data use
BitTorrent distributes files between connected peers. While downloading, your client may also upload pieces to others; after the download completes, the job is called seeding. The protocol allows data to flow in both directions, and a downloader can continue uploading until it exits the torrent. BEP 3: The BitTorrent Protocol Specification describes this peer-to-peer exchange.
In practical terms, seeding is outbound transfer. The amount sent varies with peer requests and the time the torrent stays active. There is no universal per-hour or per-month seeding figure established by the cited sources, and the upload total is not necessarily equal to the file size.

It depends on how your internet provider defines and measures usage. Seeding definitely transfers data out from your connection, but there is no universal rule in the available sources for whether a particular provider includes uploads in a plan’s allowance. Check your plan terms or usage dashboard for how upload traffic is counted.

To measure your own usage, note the torrent client’s uploaded total at the start and end of a defined interval, then compare that change with your device, router, or provider usage meter for the same interval. The figures may differ because those meters can cover other traffic or use different accounting methods.
Why can the app report more data than the file size?
A completed file’s size is not a ceiling on total traffic. The BitTorrent Help Center says app usage may exceed the file size because some incoming data can be unrequested and discarded, and because seeding can add outbound transfers. It does not quantify either factor. The explanation was modified on October 24, 2022. BitTorrent’s explanation of higher-than-file-size usage covers these sources of additional data.

How to stop or limit seeding
Choose a control based on whether you want uploads stopped entirely, slowed, restricted to certain times, or stopped after a sharing target.

BitTorrent’s mobile support instructions explain how to pause one torrent or all torrents: pause a torrent. qBittorrent documents rate limits, alternative limits, and share-ratio behavior in its Explanation of Options. Labels and settings can vary by installed version, so check the version you use.

When to use each option
- Stop uploads now: pause the individual job or all jobs.
- Keep sharing but reduce speed: set an upload-rate limit. Remember that a speed cap limits rate, not total monthly data.
- Use different limits at different times: configure alternative limits and a schedule.
- Stop after sharing a chosen amount: set a share-ratio limit to pause or remove the torrent when it reaches that target.
What a 1.0 share ratio means
A share ratio is the amount uploaded divided by the amount downloaded. A 1.0 ratio means the client has uploaded as much data as it downloaded. BitTorrent recommends sharing until at least a 1.0 ratio, but that is the vendor’s sharing recommendation, not a fixed protocol requirement or a limit on data use. Its seeding guide does not specify a required time to seed.
