Choose Torchlight: Infinite if playing on both PC and mobile, cross-platform multiplayer, and a seasonal format are your priorities. Choose Path of Exile if you are most interested in a large passive skill tree, socketable skill gems, deep itemisation and crafting on Windows. Both games present a free base game and disclose in-app purchases, so neither store listing by itself proves which title is cheaper, fairer or more beginner-friendly.

This comparison uses the features and platform information published on the Torchlight: Infinite Steam listing and the Path of Exile Epic Games Store listing. Seasonal features, counts and regional availability can change; check the live store page before installing.

Quick answer: match the game to the systems you want

The two games overlap at the broadest level: each is a free-to-play action RPG built around combat, character progression and equipment. Their official store descriptions, however, emphasise different reasons to play.

  • Torchlight: Infinite: the Steam page presents a PC/mobile cross-platform game with single-player, online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer. It highlights seasonal updates, 24 talent tabs, more than 200 legendary gear items, more than 240 skills, a trade house, and a design with no stamina and no cooldowns. A third-party account must be bound to log in.
  • Path of Exile: the Epic listing identifies a Windows online action RPG that can be played alone or with up to five friends. Its headline systems are a sprawling passive skill tree, socketable skill gems, itemisation and crafting. The listing names seven starting classes and 18 subclasses.

Those are descriptions, not independent measurements of depth, balance or ease of use. The pages do not establish that one game has more viable builds, better combat, lower spending pressure or a gentler learning curve. Use the documented differences to decide what you want to investigate first.

At-a-glance comparison

Question Torchlight: Infinite Path of Exile Why it matters
Where can the researched listing be played? Steam describes PC/mobile cross-platform play. The researched Epic listing identifies Windows. Choose Torchlight if moving between PC and mobile is important; verify current regional support before installing.
Account requirement The Steam listing says a third-party account must be bound to log in. The Epic listing does not state an equivalent account-binding requirement in the supplied details. Account linking may affect setup and privacy decisions.
Solo and group play Single-player, online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer are listed. Solo play or parties of up to five friends are described. Consider both your preferred party size and whether friends use different devices.
Build features named by the store 24 talent tabs, 200+ legendary gear items and 240+ skills. Sprawling passive skill tree, socketable skill gems, itemisation and crafting; seven starting classes and 18 subclasses. The lists show different design emphases, not a verified ranking of complexity or variety.
Monetisation disclosure Free-to-play with in-app purchases; the page also describes seasonal rewards and Pactspirit draws. Free base game that may include in-app purchases. Both can be downloaded without buying the base game, but prices, value and gameplay impact are not established by these disclosures.
Season information The opened page features the “Afterlight” season and describes seasonal progression and a challenge mode. The researched listing does not provide a comparable current-season specification. Torchlight’s visible season details are time-sensitive; verify Path of Exile’s current league separately.

Platforms, accounts and access

Torchlight: Infinite is the flexible-device option

The Steam listing describes Torchlight: Infinite as a cross-platform PC/mobile game. It lists single-player, online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer, so the store presentation explicitly supports playing across those device categories. The same page says players must bind a third-party account to log in. That requirement is part of the access decision: plan for an additional account relationship rather than assuming a Steam-only sign-in.

Steam lists XD as developer and publisher, a May 9, 2023 release date, free-to-play status and in-app purchases. The release date is historical; it does not indicate the current season or content state. The store page’s season name, events, hero traits, rewards and catalogue counts are changeable.

Cross-platform availability is useful if you want the option to move between device categories, but it should not be treated as a guarantee that every detail of your experience will be identical on PC and mobile. The listing establishes cross-platform play; it does not explain every account, interface or performance difference between devices. Its third-party account-binding notice is particularly relevant if you prefer to keep logins separate or want to understand the account step before creating a character.

Path of Exile is documented here as a Windows game

The researched Epic Games Store listing identifies Windows and describes Path of Exile as an online free-to-play action RPG set in Wraeclast. It supports solo play or parties of up to five friends. Those platform and regional details apply to the listing examined; store availability and purchase options can differ by region and can change, so check the current listing for your location.

The Epic page is the evidence for the Windows description in this comparison. It does not, in the supplied information, document mobile support or cross-platform play. Therefore, do not assume that the two games offer equivalent device coverage.

The Steam listing for Torchlight: Infinite includes system requirements, but the details available for this comparison do not set out a complete hardware specification for either title. If your PC is near the minimum needed to run a game, check the live requirements on the relevant store page rather than inferring compatibility from the platform label. Likewise, the absence of mobile information from the Epic listing is a limit of that listing, not proof that no other platform option exists.

How the build systems differ

Torchlight: Infinite: talents, skills and legendary gear

Torchlight: Infinite’s Steam page gives three headline figures: 24 talent tabs, more than 200 legendary gear items and more than 240 skills. It also highlights a trade house. These numbers communicate the range of systems the publisher is currently presenting, but they are not an independently audited count of usable builds or an assurance that every item or skill is equally effective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The page also describes no stamina and no cooldowns. In practical terms, that tells a prospective player how the listing frames its activity loop: the store does not advertise a stamina resource or skill cooldowns as limits. It does not, by itself, explain every restriction, resource cost or balance rule in combat.

For comparison purposes, read the counts as signposts rather than as a scorecard. A higher number in a store description does not tell you how many combinations are practical, how much planning they require, or whether you will enjoy the moment-to-moment play. The trade house similarly signals that item exchange is part of the features being promoted, but the listing does not provide enough detail to compare its rules or convenience with another game’s economy.

Path of Exile: a connected tree, gems and crafting

Path of Exile’s Epic description foregrounds a sprawling passive skill tree, socketable skill gems, itemisation and crafting. It also lists seven starting classes and 18 subclasses. This combination points to a character-building process in which class choice, passive allocation, skill-gem sockets and equipment interact. The listing does not quantify the number of final builds, the time needed to learn the systems or the performance of any particular setup.

For a player who enjoys planning a character around interconnected systems, those are the specific features to investigate first. If you instead want the store page’s simpler catalogue-style indicators—talent tabs, skills and legendary gear—Torchlight: Infinite offers the clearer starting description. Neither preference makes one game objectively superior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The distinction is about what the official descriptions put in the foreground, not a claim that one title has fewer systems. Path of Exile’s listing names several systems that work together, while Torchlight’s current Steam page supplies numerical catalogue counts and calls attention to talents, skills, gear and a trade house. A useful decision question is therefore not “Which has the bigger number?” but “Which of these building blocks do I want to spend time learning?”

Seasonal content and progression

What Torchlight’s current Steam page says

The opened Torchlight listing features the “Afterlight” season. It describes a seasonal mechanic, a new hero trait, progression changes and a challenge mode, as well as seasonal rewards and Pactspirit draws. Because these are live-service details, they should be treated as a snapshot of the page accessed for this comparison. A later season may replace the name, mechanic, rewards or challenge structure.

The page’s reference to a trade house is also relevant to players who want an economy-facing progression path. The listing does not establish the current fees, restrictions, population, item availability or the amount of spending needed to use it effectively.

If seasonal play is your main reason to choose Torchlight, verify the currently featured season before you commit. The Afterlight details are a useful example of what the listing was promoting, but they are not a promise that the same mechanic or rewards will still be active when you arrive. Treat season names, hero traits, challenge modes and reward details as live information, not permanent specifications.

What is and is not specified for Path of Exile

The researched Epic listing explains Path of Exile’s core systems but does not provide a comparable current-season description in the supplied material. That absence is not evidence that the game lacks seasonal content; it means this comparison cannot responsibly state a current league name, mechanic, reward track or schedule. Check the official game and store information immediately before starting if seasonal timing is central to your decision.

Solo play, co-op and party size

Torchlight: Infinite’s listing explicitly includes single-player, online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer. That combination suits someone who alternates between solo sessions and co-op with friends on different supported devices. The listing does not state a maximum party size in the supplied details.

Path of Exile’s Epic page says you can play solo or with up to five friends. That is a clearly stated group limit for the listing examined. It does not promise that every activity, build or item is designed around a full party, so treat the number as an access and party-size specification rather than a balance claim.

For a group deciding together, check both the device question and the size question. Torchlight’s listing confirms cross-platform multiplayer but does not give a party ceiling in the available details; Path of Exile’s listing gives a clear maximum of five friends but identifies Windows. Do not assume that a stated party limit answers questions about matchmaking, progression sharing or whether all content is equally suited to co-op—the listings do not settle those points.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Free-to-play does not answer the spending question

Both storefronts present a free entry point while disclosing in-app purchases. Torchlight: Infinite’s page additionally mentions seasonal rewards and Pactspirit draws. Path of Exile’s listing says the free base game may include in-app purchases.

These statements establish that you can try each base game without purchasing it, but they do not establish exact prices, required spending, comparative value, cosmetic-only policies, convenience effects or pay-to-win impact. Those questions require current, region-specific purchase information and a clear definition of what “free” means for the activities you want to play. Avoid treating the store labels as proof that either game is frictionless without spending.

In practical terms, separate three questions when checking a purchase panel: what is offered for money, whether it is optional for the way you intend to play, and how it affects your experience. The storefront disclosures here answer only the broadest part: both have a free base-game entry point and in-app purchases are present or possible. They do not provide a full price list or establish whether any purchase changes progression, convenience or competitive outcomes. Do not budget from the free label alone, but do not infer a required purchase from the disclosure either.

Which game fits common player priorities?

Choose Torchlight: Infinite first when…

  • You want the researched listing’s explicit PC/mobile cross-platform positioning.
  • Your group needs cross-platform multiplayer rather than a Windows-only description.
  • You are attracted to a seasonal presentation with a named mechanic, hero trait, progression changes and challenge mode.
  • You want to explore a catalogue described in terms of talent tabs, skills, legendary gear and a trade house.
  • You accept binding a third-party account as part of logging in.

Choose Path of Exile first when…

  • You are playing on Windows and do not need mobile support established by the listing.
  • You want the specific systems the Epic page names: a sprawling passive tree, socketable skill gems, itemisation and crafting.
  • You want a documented option for solo play or parties of up to five friends.
  • You are deciding among seven starting classes and 18 subclasses.
  • You prefer to begin with a game whose store description centres on character construction through connected systems rather than headline inventory counts.

A practical decision process before you install

  1. Write down your non-negotiable device. If mobile access or switching between PC and mobile is essential, start with Torchlight: Infinite’s Steam description. If Windows is sufficient, both titles remain candidates.
  2. Check your account tolerance. Torchlight’s listing requires third-party account binding. Confirm that this is acceptable before spending time on a download or character setup.
  3. Choose the build language that sounds appealing. Pick Torchlight’s talent-tab, gear and skill catalogue if those terms motivate you. Pick Path of Exile’s passive tree, skill gems, itemisation and crafting if that planning model is the draw.
  4. Match your group size. For Path of Exile, the documented ceiling is solo or up to five friends. For Torchlight, the listing confirms co-op and cross-platform multiplayer but does not state a maximum party size in the supplied information.
  5. Read the live purchase panel in your region. Both games disclose purchases, but the supplied listings do not provide enough information to compare total cost or gameplay impact.
  6. Recheck seasonal information on launch day. Torchlight’s “Afterlight” details and its counts may have changed, while the researched Path of Exile listing does not provide a current-season comparison.

Publisher context and what it does—and does not—tell you

XD Inc.’s 2024 annual report says, “It is particularly noteworthy that PC users now constitute over half of Torchlight’s core player base.” That is a dated, publisher-reported statistic from the company’s 2024 report, not an independent measurement of the whole player population or a guarantee of current platform activity. You can read the report at XD Inc.’s 2024 annual report.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same report says XD adjusted the game’s design philosophy and that each season since the end of 2024 had shown progressive improvement in performance. Those are the publisher’s assessments. They provide context for Torchlight’s live-service direction but do not substitute for independent retention, balance or performance testing.

The player-base statistic is specifically about Torchlight’s core players and PC users, as reported by XD in 2024. It is not a current population count, a split of all accounts by device, or evidence that mobile is unsupported. Taken alongside the Steam page’s PC/mobile description, it simply adds dated publisher context: PC was already a major part of the audience described by the company. Use it as context rather than as a predictor of queue times, platform balance or future development priorities.

Important limits of this comparison

  • The store pages do not measure complexity, accessibility, build viability, end-game variety or combat feel.
  • Catalogue figures such as 24 talent tabs, 200+ legendary gear items and 240+ skills can change and are not independently verified here.
  • The evidence does not support a definitive judgement about fairness, pay-to-win effects, required spending or the relative value of purchases.
  • Path of Exile’s platform and purchase details come from the researched Epic listing; regional storefronts may differ.
  • No hardware upgrade, peripheral, physical edition or guide is established as necessary for either downloadable game.

Bottom line

There is no evidence-based universal winner. Start with Torchlight: Infinite when device flexibility, cross-platform play and its currently advertised seasonal systems are the deciding factors—and be prepared to bind a third-party account. Start with Path of Exile when you specifically want its documented passive tree, socketable skill gems, itemisation and crafting on Windows, with solo play or parties of up to five friends. In both cases, treat the free label as an invitation to try the base game, not as a complete statement about ongoing costs or purchase impact.

Does the Path of Exile listing confirm mobile or cross-platform play?
