Tartarus is the Caged Beast seasonal mechanic in Torchlight: Infinite’s SS14 Netherrealm, built around Followers and their exclusive skills. As of October 13, 2026, the season is scheduled to begin globally on October 16 at 10:00, but the official pre-launch information does not establish Tartarus’s difficulty tiers, unlock requirements, enemy scaling, or tier-by-tier rewards. You can understand the announced progression and choose skills by role; wait for the live game to confirm exact difficulty values.
What Tartarus is in SS14
SS14 frames Tartarus around the Caged Beasts mechanic in the Netherrealm. The season’s story presents you as the Warden: recapture fugitives, pressure and punish them, and prepare for a riot. The official season update describes the mechanic, but its pre-launch text does not give a complete, numerical difficulty ladder.
The official update log schedules the global season start for October 16, 2026, at 10:00. This explanation reflects announced information available on October 13, 2026, before launch; it does not report hands-on results from the live season.
How Tartarus progression works
Followers are the announced growth layer
The update introduces Followers as the new growth system for the mechanic. It names four species: Lion Queen, Lone Wolf, Mammoth, and Witch Rat. Follower quality affects two things: how many skill slots a Follower has and the quality of its Active Skills. That makes quality relevant to the companion’s customization and skill potential, but the announcement does not provide quality thresholds, acquisition rates, or a preferred upgrade route.

Tartarus skills add tactical effects
Tartarus skills are exclusive to Followers. They can support the player or allies with buffs, or hinder enemies with debuffs. The official update log gives examples that show the range of roles, rather than a complete ranking or list of every available skill.
What the announced skills do
| Skill | Announced effect | Tactical role |
|---|---|---|
| Black Hole | Creates a field for four seconds that deals damage and pulls enemies inward. While the field deals damage, allies gain an additional 8% Affliction effect for four seconds. | Damage and enemy grouping, with a conditional ally buff. |
| Life Tonic | Restores allies for 3% of maximum Life per second for four seconds. If the player is at Low Life when it is cast, it additionally restores 30% of the player’s maximum Life; that additional effect has a ten-second interval. | Team recovery, with an extra player-healing effect conditioned on Low Life. |
| Lightning Storm | Tracks enemies for four seconds and periodically strikes them. Lightning hits inflict Numbed. | Enemy-targeting damage and debuff application. |
These are examples published in the official SS14 update log, not evidence that one skill is best for every character or encounter. Their effects are game parameters; the percentages and durations describe the announced skill behavior, not independent performance measurements.
How to choose a Follower skill
Before live testing establishes how skills perform in particular encounters, choose by the role you need and by how that role fits your build. The published examples support a practical comparison:

Rank #2
- Randomization – Game level layouts are randomly created, so each adventure will always be unique.
- Easy, approachable interface – Torchlight is designed to be easy to play right from the beginning. With an intuitive interface, players can dive right in!
- Character Classes – Players will create and customize a character, choosing from 3 main Classes: The Destroyer, The Alchemist, or The Vanquisher.
- Pets – choose a pet to accompany your character. Pets can level up along with the player; they can also fight, carry items, and perform helpful tasks.
- Need to gather enemies and contribute damage? Black Hole pulls enemies together while dealing damage. Its additional Affliction effect for allies applies while the field is dealing damage, so it combines control with a conditional group benefit.
- Need recovery for the group? Life Tonic restores allies over four seconds. Its additional 30% maximum-Life restoration for the player only applies if the player is at Low Life when the skill is cast, and the update gives that additional effect a ten-second interval.
- Need a skill that tracks targets and applies a debuff? Lightning Storm follows enemies for four seconds, periodically striking them and inflicting Numbed on lightning hits.
Consider whether the effect helps your character’s damage plan, survival needs, or party role. Also account for the skill’s timing and conditions: a four-second field, a Low Life trigger, and repeated tracking strikes are different forms of value. The announcement does not establish exact build synergies, skill-slot trade-offs, or an optimal Follower for any class, so treat those as choices to validate in the game rather than settled recommendations.
How difficult is Tartarus, and what does it reward?
The exact answer is not established in the official pre-launch material available on October 13, 2026. It does not publish Tartarus difficulty tiers, their unlock conditions, monster scaling, or rewards at each tier. This is an evidence limit, not proof that Tartarus has no difficulty settings. A complete tier chart or a recommended starting tier would therefore be premature.
The update does show that challenge and reward can be connected in other seasonal systems. Listed compass effects raise monster health while modifying drops. A listed Warden Cache Pactspirit increases cache drops and adds chances for duplication or reopening. Those examples do not define Tartarus’s own difficulty progression or establish that its tiers use the same rules.
Rank #3
- 2-5 players - 40 minute playing time - Ages 10+
After the season goes live, check the in-game Tartarus interface and official update information for the requirements and values shown there. Confirm which difficulty is available to your character, what changes when you raise it, and what rewards the game associates with that setting before committing to a higher challenge. The pre-launch announcement is not enough to supply those figures or a safe starting recommendation.
What to confirm when SS14 launches
- Which Tartarus difficulty options are available and what unlocks each one.
- How enemy health or other challenge factors change between options.
- What rewards are tied to each difficulty, rather than to other seasonal systems.
- How Followers are obtained and how their quality is measured in the live game.
- Which Active Skills are available beyond the three examples in the update log, and how their effects fit your build.
Until those details are visible, the reliable pre-launch progression picture is limited to the announced Follower system: four named species, quality-based skill slots and Active Skill quality, and companion-only Tartarus skills with effects that support allies or debuff enemies.
