Windows 7 reached end of life years ago, but it can still run a small number of usable browsers. The important distinction is between a browser that launches and one that is still maintained for Windows 7.
There are six choices that can be verified from official project documentation: Firefox ESR 115, Chrome 109, Edge 109, Supermium, Pale Moon, and Basilisk. That is why this guide does not pad the list with Opera, Vivaldi, or Mypal: their current official pages do not verify Windows 7 support.
Best Windows 7 browsers at a glance
| Browser | Windows 7 status | Best for | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Firefox ESR 115 | Last Firefox release for Windows 7; Mozilla security updates are currently extended through March 2027 | Most users and everyday browsing | Older browser engine and occasional migration issues |
| Supermium | Chromium fork with 32-bit and 64-bit Windows builds | Modern websites and Chromium compatibility | Third-party project; hardware and driver compatibility vary |
| Pale Moon | Officially lists Windows 7 SP1 for 32-bit and 64-bit builds | Users who prefer a traditional, lightweight browser | Some modern websites and Chromium-only features fail |
| Basilisk | Official requirement is Windows 7 or later | Legacy extensions, plugins, and older web applications | Weak compatibility with newer sites and DRM |
| Google Chrome 109 | Final Chrome version supporting Windows 7, released January 10, 2023 | Existing Chrome installations that must be preserved | No current Chrome updates for ordinary Windows 7 |
| Microsoft Edge 109 | Final Edge version for Windows 7, with support ending January 12, 2023 | Existing Edge users and Microsoft-style browser workflows | No current Edge update channel for Windows 7 |
1. Firefox ESR 115: the safest general recommendation
Firefox ESR 115 is the strongest default choice for a Windows 7 computer. Mozilla identifies Firefox 115 as the last Firefox version for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1, and moves those systems to the Extended Support Release channel.
Mozilla’s current support information says security updates for ESR 115 have been extended through March 2027, with the company planning to reassess the situation afterward. Older articles may say February 2026 or August 2026; those dates are no longer the current Mozilla position.

How to install it
- Open Mozilla’s Firefox support page for users of Windows 7, 8, and 8.1.
- Select Download Now Get Firefox if the site detects Windows 7.
- For manual selection, choose Download in another language or operating system.
- Select Choose the version of Firefox you prefer, then choose the operating system and language.
- Run the installer and allow it to replace or install alongside an older Firefox installation.
Mozilla’s April 29, 2025 release notes identify Firefox ESR 115.23.0 as supported on Windows 7 through Windows 8.1. The exact ESR point release will change as Mozilla publishes updates, so use Mozilla’s official download page rather than an old installer mirror.
A password-import problem to expect
Firefox’s migration wizard may not import passwords from Chrome or another Chromium browser. Changes to Chrome’s Windows password encryption can prevent the automatic transfer.
The documented workaround is to export passwords from Chrome as a CSV file, then import that file through Firefox’s migration or password-manager tools. Treat the CSV as sensitive: it contains readable passwords, so delete it immediately after a successful import.
2. Supermium: the modern Chromium option
Supermium is a Chromium fork built specifically for older Windows versions. Its GitHub releases provide separate 32-bit and 64-bit installers, along with archive packages. It is the most practical option when a site works properly only with a Chromium-style engine.
The project’s 2025 release history includes version 144 builds. A May 10, 2025 release fixed a Windows 7 issue that caused some non-tablet PCs to be identified as tablets, affecting JavaScript media queries. The current release page also lists later builds, so check the project’s release page for the appropriate package rather than relying on a version number copied from an older article.
Choose the right package
- Open the Supermium releases page.
- Choose the Windows installer matching the computer’s architecture: 32-bit for a 32-bit Windows installation or 64-bit for a 64-bit installation.
- Install it normally, or download an archive if you need a non-installer setup.
- Test video playback, hardware acceleration, and the sites you actually use.
Supermium’s release notes also document portable command files named Supermium (Portable).cmd and Supermium (Portable Classic).cmd. These place the profile beside the executable and leave profiles unencrypted so they can be moved between volumes. That convenience has a security cost: anyone who can read the folder may be able to access profile data.

Some experimental Supermium releases document the switch --disable-safe-browsing-throttle for eliminating certain ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENT errors. Do not add this switch routinely. It is an experimental troubleshooting option, not a requirement for installing Supermium on Windows 7.

3. Pale Moon: a Windows 7 browser with its own engine
Pale Moon’s official download page explicitly lists Windows 7 SP1 or later for both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows. It provides installers, portable packages, and SHA-256 hashes.
Pale Moon is not Chromium and is not current Firefox. That makes it a reasonable choice for users who prefer its interface, extension model, or lower demands on older hardware, but it also means that some modern sites will not behave like they do in Chrome or Firefox. Chromium-only APIs, newer codecs, JavaScript features, and browser-detection rules can all cause problems.
For a 2025 reference point, Pale Moon 33.9.1 was released on October 21, 2025 as a bug-fix and security update. The project’s current download page may show a newer package, so use the version currently offered there rather than treating 33.9.1 as the latest release.
Important portable-package details
Pale Moon’s portable download is not completely self-contained. Its 7-Zip packages store some user data in normal Windows user folders, require write access to their location, and do not work correctly from read-only media.

The safer procedure is to download a fresh portable package and copy the old user folder into it.

4. Basilisk: useful for legacy extensions and plugins
Basilisk’s official requirements page says Windows 7 or later. It recommends at least 1 GB of RAM, or 2 GB or more for heavier use, and strongly recommends a dedicated GPU.
The browser is based on the Unified XUL Platform and Goanna engine rather than Chromium or modern Firefox. Its notable advantage is support for older technologies such as NPAPI plugins and XUL-based extensions. That can make it valuable for an old internal application or a legacy workflow that newer browsers abandoned.
Basilisk provides separate x86 32-bit and x86 64-bit Windows downloads. Select the package that matches Windows 7, not merely the processor’s capabilities. The project labels its Windows archives “NOT portable builds,” so downloading an archive does not mean you have a self-contained portable browser.

Newer web APIs, current DRM implementations, Chromium-specific behavior, and modern media support may be absent or incomplete. Use it when legacy compatibility matters more than access to the newest web applications.
5. Google Chrome 109: compatible, but frozen
Chrome 109 is the last Google Chrome version that supports Windows 7. Google released it on January 10, 2023.
Chrome 109 should be viewed as a compatibility endpoint, not a current browser. Google’s current requirements list Windows 10 or later for supported Windows installations. The special language about critical fixes after version 109 applies to Windows Server 2012 and Server 2012 R2, not ordinary Windows 7 computers.

Chrome 109 may still open familiar pages, but websites can reject it because its JavaScript engine, TLS behavior, codecs, user-agent version, and browser APIs are obsolete. Chrome Web Store extensions may also require APIs that do not exist in the final Windows 7 build.

6. Microsoft Edge 109: the final Windows 7 Edge
Microsoft ended Edge support on Windows 7 with Edge 109 on January 12, 2023. The same cutoff covered Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, and Windows Server 2012 R2.
Edge 109 can still launch and load ordinary pages, especially if it is already installed. It is not, however, an actively updated Windows 7 browser. Current Edge releases require supported Windows versions, and Microsoft’s current operating-system list does not include Windows 7.
Expect the same limitations as Chrome 109: newer sites may require browser APIs, codecs, security behavior, or a user-agent version that Edge 109 cannot provide. The claim that Chromium’s continued development automatically keeps Edge supported on Windows 7 is incorrect; Microsoft explicitly records support as ending with Edge 109.
Why Opera, Vivaldi, and Mypal are not included
A list titled “top eight” is tempting, but the remaining three commonly mentioned names cannot be verified from their current official documentation.

- 【EASY ON THE EYES】 Protect your eyes and enhance your comfort with Blue-Light Shift technology. This feature reduces harmful blue light emissions from your screen, helping to alleviate eye strain during long hours of use and promoting healthier viewing habits.
- 【WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE】Our sleek minimal bezel design ensures undivided attention. The nearly bezel-free display seamlessly connects in a dual monitor arrangement, delivering an unobstructed view that lets you focus on more at once, completely distraction-free.
- Mypal: its official site describes the browser as being for Windows XP. It does not establish official Windows 7 support.
- Opera: Opera’s current requirements page does not list Windows 7 or identify a Windows 7-compatible release.
- Vivaldi: its current download page offers a general desktop download but does not establish Windows 7 compatibility or identify a current Windows 7 build.
An old archived installer may run on Windows 7, but that is not the same as a currently supported browser. Including such products as verified entries would give a misleading answer.
How to choose and install a browser safely
- Confirm Windows architecture. Right-click Computer, select Properties, and check whether Windows 7 is 32-bit or 64-bit. Download the matching build where the project provides both.
- Install Windows 7 Service Pack 1. Pale Moon specifically requires Win7 SP1 or later, and current legacy-browser builds generally assume an updated Windows 7 baseline.
- Use official sources. Download Firefox from Mozilla, Pale Moon and Basilisk from their project sites, and Supermium from its GitHub releases page. Avoid “browser collection” sites and repacked installers.
- Keep sensitive data separate. Before testing an unfamiliar fork, do not immediately import your password database. Create a separate browser profile or test account first.
- Test the sites that matter. Check sign-in, video, file downloads, webmail, online banking, and any work application. A browser can pass a basic page test and still fail on video codecs or JavaScript-heavy applications.
- Plan the operating-system upgrade. No browser can repair Windows 7’s unsupported kernel, drivers, system libraries, or missing security fixes. Move the computer to a supported Windows release or a maintained Linux distribution if the hardware permits.
FAQ
What is the best browser for Windows 7 in 2025?
Firefox ESR 115 is the best general recommendation because it is the last Firefox branch for Windows 7 and Mozilla’s current support page extends ESR 115 security updates through March 2027. Supermium is a better fit when Chromium compatibility is the priority.
Does Chrome still work on Windows 7?
Yes, Chrome 109 is the final Chrome version that supports Windows 7. It is frozen, released on January 10, 2023, and does not receive the current Chrome update stream for ordinary Windows 7 installations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDoes Microsoft Edge still support Windows 7?
Only Edge 109 is compatible. Microsoft ended Windows 7 support for Edge on January 12, 2023, so current Edge releases do not provide a Windows 7 update channel.
Can Firefox ESR 115 be used safely on Windows 7?
It is the most supportable browser choice, but the computer remains exposed to Windows 7 vulnerabilities because Microsoft ended operating-system support in January 2023. Browser updates do not make the operating system secure.
Are there really eight supported browsers for Windows 7?
Not from the current official documentation reviewed for this guide. Six choices can be verified: Firefox ESR 115, Chrome 109, Edge 109, Supermium, Pale Moon, and Basilisk. Current official pages do not verify Windows 7 support for Opera, Vivaldi, or Mypal.
Which Windows 7 browser supports Chrome extensions?
Supermium is the closest choice because it is a Chromium fork. Compatibility with individual extensions is not guaranteed, especially for extensions that require newer Chromium APIs. Chrome 109 may run older extensions but is no longer current.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The Bottom Line
For most Windows 7 computers, install Firefox ESR 115 from Mozilla. Choose Supermium when modern Chromium compatibility is more important and your hardware works well with it. Use Pale Moon or Basilisk for their specific interfaces and legacy capabilities, not as universal replacements for current browsers. Chrome 109 and Edge 109 remain usable only as frozen compatibility options.
There is no genuinely current, fully secure browser stack for Windows 7 because the operating system itself is unsupported. Treat these browsers as a bridge to migrating the computer, not as a permanent security solution.
