The right 4K ultra short throw (UST) projector depends less on a headline lumen figure than on your room, screen size, and willingness to add a compatible screen. For a bright room, the Epson EpiqVision Ultra LS800 has the clearest evidence-backed advantage; for stronger contrast and color in a darker room, consider the Hisense PX3-PRO. The Hisense L9Q is a premium large-image option with built-in Google TV and substantial sound, while the LG CineBeam HU915QE and Hisense PX4 Pro round out this shortlist for picture quality and high-refresh gaming, respectively.
This is a buying guide based on published reviews and manufacturer specifications, not a standardized head-to-head test. The five models are selected for distinct use cases; they are not a universal ranking, and prices and availability vary by region and retailer.
How to choose a 4K UST projector
A UST projector sits close to the wall and casts its image upward, which can make a very large picture possible without mounting a projector across the room. It does not remove the need to plan the installation: the projector’s supported image size, its placement geometry, and the screen surface all affect the result. Before buying, check the manufacturer’s setup guidance for your intended diagonal and confirm that any screen you plan to use is compatible.
- Room light: A brighter projector is generally the safer direction where the room cannot be darkened. Brightness claims are not automatically comparable when manufacturers or reviewers use different measurement standards.
- Contrast and color: In a darker room, black levels and color performance may matter more than maximizing brightness.
- Screen and image size: Check the supported range and whether the model includes a screen. UST projection is especially sensitive to screen flatness and placement.
- Features: Built-in streaming, speakers, and gaming modes can reduce extra equipment, but they do not substitute for checking the installation and input requirements.
- Price and bundle: Treat prices reported in reviews as dated, regional references, not live quotes. Confirm whether a screen is included in the exact package being sold.
Five 4K UST projectors to consider
1. Epson EpiqVision Ultra LS800 — best-supported pick for a brighter room
The LS800 is the most defensible choice in this group when you cannot fully control ambient light. RTINGS says it is noticeably brighter than the Hisense PX3-PRO and better suited to rooms that are not light-controlled. That is a reviewer comparison, not a claim that it will look bright in every room or on every screen. RTINGS’ LS800 and PX3-PRO comparison

Epson specifies a three-chip 3LCD laser system and rates the LS800 at 4,000 lumens of color brightness under IDMS and 4,000 lumens of white brightness under ISO. Those are separate manufacturer specifications with named measurement bases; do not compare either number directly with another model’s figure unless the measurement standard matches. TechRadar’s 2026 roundup describes it as a 4K projector supporting an image up to 150 inches. Epson LS800 product specifications TechRadar’s 2026 UST projector roundup

2. Hisense PX3-PRO — stronger candidate for a darker room
RTINGS says the PX3-PRO has better contrast and color than the LS800, making it a stronger candidate where you can dim the room and value image depth. Hisense advertises 110% BT.2020 color-gamut coverage and 3000:1 native contrast; these figures are manufacturer claims, not independent measurements in the cited comparison. Hisense also lists Dolby Vision and support for a screen up to 150 inches. RTINGS’ comparison Hisense PX3-PRO product page

3. Hisense L9Q — premium large-image option with built-in sound
The L9Q is aimed at buyers seeking a large projection range and a more self-contained setup. TechRadar’s 2026 roundup lists 5,000 lumens and an 80–200-inch projection range. Its review reports Google TV, a ten-speaker sound system, and support for 4K at 60 Hz or 1080p at 240 Hz. These are review-reported features, not a substitute for checking which ports and input conditions are required for the mode you plan to use. TechRadar’s roundup TechRadar’s L9Q review
The trade-offs are its premium positioning and the cost and setup of a screen: TechRadar says the L9Q does not include one. The same review recorded an initial US MSRP of $5,999 and a UK price of £3,999, with first availability in September 2025. These are historical launch figures, not current retail prices. The review’s verdict, by Mark Knapp, was that it was “pricey and lack a screen, but … otherwise the complete package”; that is an individual reviewer’s judgment. TechRadar’s L9Q review

Best fit: A buyer who values the L9Q’s large stated range, integrated streaming, and sound, and has budgeted separately for a compatible screen. Do not treat its 5,000-lumen listing as directly comparable with Epson’s IDMS- and ISO-qualified figures.

5. Hisense PX4 Pro — consider for high-refresh 1080p gaming
What Hi-Fi?’s September 2026 review says the PX4 Pro uses pixel shifting to produce 4K and supports a 1080p/240Hz mode. It reports Hisense’s claim of 3,500 lumens peak brightness; the cited material does not establish that figure as an independent measurement, so it should not be treated as a directly comparable test result. What Hi-Fi?’s PX4 Pro review
Best fit: A shopper interested in a high-refresh 1080p gaming mode who is willing to verify the exact input, connection, and current availability details for their setup. The cited review supports pixel-shifted 4K and the gaming mode; it does not establish a brightness comparison with the other picks.

Which one should you buy?
- Your room stays somewhat bright: Start with the Epson LS800 because RTINGS specifically favors its brightness over the PX3-PRO for rooms that are not light-controlled.
- You can darken the room and want stronger contrast and color: Consider the Hisense PX3-PRO, with the qualification that its numerical gamut and contrast specifications are manufacturer claims.
- You want streaming, substantial built-in sound, and a very large image range: Consider the Hisense L9Q, while accounting for the separate screen and checking current local pricing.
- You prioritize a picture-quality pick in the published 90–120-inch range: Look at the LG HU915QE and weigh TechRadar’s price and settings caveats.
- You are interested in high-refresh gaming: Investigate the PX4 Pro’s reported 1080p/240Hz mode and verify the connection requirements for your console or PC.
Before ordering, confirm the projector’s image-size geometry against your room, screen compatibility and inclusion, the source device and input needed for desired gaming modes, and the current price and warranty in your market. A very large maximum diagonal, a high lumen claim, or built-in speakers alone is not enough to establish that a projector suits your particular room.
