A portable anti-malware tool runs directly from a USB drive instead of requiring a conventional Windows installation. That makes it useful when malware blocks antivirus setup, Windows is unstable, or you need a second opinion without adding another permanent security product.
There is an important distinction, however: portable does not automatically mean offline. Emsisoft Emergency Kit and ClamWin Portable can be prepared for offline use after updating, while tools such as ESET Online Scanner and Trend Micro HouseCall download their scanning components when launched. Microsoft Safety Scanner has another restriction: each download expires after 10 days.
The list below prioritizes useful, currently available Windows tools, their real USB behavior, and the situations where each one is most appropriate.

1. Emsisoft Emergency Kit
Best overall choice for a prepared rescue USB.
Emsisoft Emergency Kit is a portable cleanup toolkit with both a graphical scanner and a command-line scanner. The program folder can be extracted to a pen drive and updated independently of a normal Windows installation.

The current product information lists version 2025.7.0.12683, released June 27, 2025, for 64-bit Windows 10, Windows Server 2016, and later. It should not be presented as a current solution for Windows XP, Vista, or 32-bit Windows.
Prepare it on a USB drive
- Download the Emergency Kit package from Emsisoft.
- Extract it directly to the pen drive.
- Run
Start Emergency Kit Scanner.exe. - Use the update function before taking the drive to another computer.
For private users, the scanner is free. Commercial technicians, repair shops, and businesses need the appropriate Emsisoft Emergency Kit Pro license.
Useful command-line scan

a2cmd.exe /f="c:" /m /t /a /q="c:quarantine"In this example, /f selects the scan path, /m scans memory, /t checks traces and registry areas, /a scans archives, and /q specifies the quarantine directory. Do not distribute a USB copy that has not been updated for months.

2. Microsoft Safety Scanner
Best general-purpose Microsoft cleanup utility.
Microsoft Safety Scanner, normally named msert.exe, is a manually launched executable. It does not install a permanent antivirus, Start-menu entry, or desktop icon. Download the correct 32-bit or 64-bit version, save it to the USB drive, and select a scan type when it starts.
The key limitation is its expiry period: Microsoft says the tool expires 10 days after download. A reusable pen drive should therefore contain a download link or a reminder to fetch a fresh copy before each job. The scan log is stored at:
%SYSTEMROOT%debugmsert.logSafety Scanner does not replace Microsoft Defender Antivirus or provide real-time protection. It also requires SHA-2 code-signing support. If a scan fails, check the log under %systemroot%debug. Error 0x80508019 indicates that the selected scan destination does not exist; 0x80508007 indicates insufficient system memory.
3. Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool
Best for a deep second-opinion scan while Windows still operates normally.

Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool runs without installation, scans and disinfects Windows computers, and places detected objects in quarantine. Its executable should not be treated as a permanently current offline scanner: Internet access is required to connect to Kaspersky Security Network and update antivirus databases.
Typical graphical workflow
- Download the tool immediately before use.
- Run it and accept the license, privacy, and Kaspersky Security Network statements.
- Select the drives, folders, or other scan areas.
- Start the scan and review the proposed quarantine or disinfection actions.
The tool stores working files, reports, traces, and quarantine data in a directory named similar to KVRT*_Data. Active infections may require a restart after disinfection.

Kaspersky documentation currently contains both Windows- and Linux-oriented instructions. Verify that the downloaded file matches the target operating system. For the documented Linux executable, examples include:

Best for targeted removal of known threats.
Trellix Stinger is a stand-alone executable focused on malware families listed in its Threat List. It is deliberately narrower than a full antivirus, so a clean Stinger result does not prove that the computer is malware-free.
Use stinger64.exe on a 64-bit system or stinger32.exe on a 32-bit system. By default, Stinger checks running processes, loaded modules, registry areas, WMI, and malware-associated directories.
- Launch the appropriate executable.
- Choose Customize my scan to add drives or directories.
- Open preferences if a rootkit scan is required; rootkit scanning is not enabled by default.
- Click Scan.
Stinger repairs infected files by default. Logs are saved in the directory from which it was run, while quarantine files are stored under C:QuarantineStinger. Its configuration file is Stinger.opt. Rootkit scanning may update Trellix VSCore files on the target PC.
5. Dr.Web CureIt!
Best when conventional antivirus installation is blocked.
Dr.Web CureIt! is a portable scanner and cleaner based on the Dr.Web engine. Its manual lists support through Windows 11 on both 32-bit and 64-bit platforms. It detects viruses, worms, trojans, rootkits, spyware, dialers, adware, hacktools, jokes, and riskware.
The free personal edition has no resident monitor, command-line scanner, or automatic database updater. Its downloaded executable contains databases current at the time of download. To obtain newer definitions, download CureIt! again; database additions may be published one or more times per hour.
The free edition requires Internet access and administrator privileges. It also sends general information about the computer and its security state to Doctor Web during scanning. Commercial use requires a paid license.

6. Trend Micro HouseCall
Best when the infected computer has reliable Internet access.
HouseCall is a browser-independent Windows scanner supporting quick, full, and custom scans. Its launcher is named HousecallLauncher.exe, but the launcher is not the complete scanning product. It downloads the local engine, configuration files, and pattern files before scanning.
- Save
HousecallLauncher.exeto the USB drive. - Run it on the target computer.
- Choose Quick Scan, Full Scan, or Custom Scan.
- For a custom scan, select the folders that need checking.
A blocked or slow connection can prevent the components from downloading. HouseCall complements real-time security software and does not provide proactive malicious-URL blocking. Do not confuse it with HouseCall for Home Networks: Trend Micro ended support for that separate product in 2024.
7. ESET Online Scanner
Best for a simple one-time second opinion.
ESET Online Scanner is a free Windows tool for detecting and removing malware, viruses, trojans, spyware, phishing-related threats, and other Internet threats. It can run alongside an existing antivirus and does not require registration for the free scan.
Save the downloaded executable to the pen drive, run it on the target PC, and allow it to download current scanning components. This is an online portable launcher, not an offline USB scanner. If the computer cannot reach ESET services, choose an offline-capable option instead.

8. Malwarebytes AdwCleaner
Best for browser hijackers, adware, PUPs, and unwanted toolbars.
AdwCleaner is a small stand-alone Malwarebytes utility, but it is not a portable version of the full Malwarebytes antivirus scanner. Its specialty is unwanted software and browser-related changes.
Current requirements list Windows 8.1, Windows 10, or Windows 11, a 800 MHz SSE2-capable CPU, 512 MB of RAM, 10 MB of disk space, and a recommended 1024×768 display. Windows XP, Vista, 7, and 8 are no longer supported.

Repair options
In Settings > Application, review Basic Repair Actions before cleaning. Available actions include deleting IFEO and tracing keys, deleting Prefetch files, resetting the proxy, resetting Chrome policies, resetting TCP/IP, and resetting the firewall. These can change system or browser configuration, so do not blindly enable every option on a business computer.

AdwCleaner.exe /uninstall/uninstall also deletes quarantined content. Logs and quarantine are normally stored in C:AdwCleaner. AdwCleaner needs outbound HTTPS access for updates and related services.
9. ClamWin Portable
Best open-source fallback for basic offline scanning.
ClamWin is a free, open-source, on-demand Windows scanner. The PortableApps package makes it convenient to carry on removable storage. Download its virus definitions while online, then scan selected files, folders, or drives without an Internet connection.
The project lists ClamWin Free Antivirus 0.103.2.1. The PortableApps listing uses a package similar to ClamWinPortable_0.103.2.1_Build_1.4.3_English.paf.exe.
Its major limitation is the absence of an on-access real-time scanner. ClamWin Portable is useful as an offline inspection tool, but it should not be treated as a replacement for Microsoft Defender or another current full antivirus. Use PortableApps or official project channels rather than random portable-software mirrors.

Microsoft’s Malicious Software Removal Tool, or MSRT, is distributed through Windows Update and as a stand-alone executable. It focuses on specific prevalent malware families and active infections. It does not remove spyware and is not a general-purpose antivirus.

mrt.exe /? &:: display helpThe log is stored at %windir%debugmrt.log. MSRT requires local administrator privileges and may request a restart. Full scans include fixed and removable drives but do not scan mapped network drives.
Although it has no installer, MSRT creates a randomly named temporary directory on the system drive during execution. Windows normally removes it afterward, but Microsoft notes that it can sometimes remain.
What to put on a practical rescue USB
A useful pen drive does not need every scanner in the ranking. Start with tools that cover different failure modes:

Before using the drive, refresh tools that expire or download their engines. Download Microsoft Safety Scanner again after 10 days, obtain a new Dr.Web CureIt! copy for newer databases, and allow Kaspersky, Trend Micro, and ESET to update or download components. Update Emsisoft Emergency Kit and ClamWin definitions before deploying them.
How to scan a compromised Windows PC from USB
- Protect the rescue drive. Use a write-protected drive where practical, and do not leave it connected while the computer is unattended.
- Record the situation. Note symptoms, suspicious files, recent alerts, and whether the computer has Internet access.
- Disconnect the PC from the network if you suspect active remote access, ransomware propagation, or data theft. Reconnect only when an online scanner needs current components.
- Run a broad scanner first. Emsisoft Emergency Kit or Microsoft Safety Scanner is a sensible starting point.
- Use a specialist second scan. Run Stinger for a named threat and AdwCleaner for browser changes, adware, and PUPs.
- Quarantine rather than delete unless you are certain an item is malicious. Deleting system files can make recovery harder.
- Restart when requested, then scan again. Some malware cannot be fully cleaned while its process is active.
- Review logs. Save relevant logs before removing the tools or reformatting the USB drive.
- Change passwords from a known-clean device if the infected PC was used for banking, email, administrator access, or password storage.
Tools omitted from this list
Norton Power Eraser should not be included in a current list: Norton discontinued it on April 30, 2026, and says it is no longer supported, functional, or updated. Sophos Scan & Clean also appears in many older articles, but Sophos’s current free-tools page no longer lists it as an available consumer portable scanner. Finally, the full Malwarebytes Windows product is not a portable USB scanner; AdwCleaner is the Malwarebytes utility suited to this role.

What is the best portable anti-malware tool for a USB drive?
Emsisoft Emergency Kit is the strongest general choice for a prepared rescue USB because it provides broad malware detection, a graphical scanner, and a command-line scanner without conventional installation. Update it before use, and remember that the free license is intended for private users.
Can portable anti-malware tools work without Internet access?
Some can. Emsisoft Emergency Kit and ClamWin Portable can scan offline after their program files and definitions have been updated. Does portable mean the tool is safe to use on any Windows version?
No. Check system requirements first. For example, current Emsisoft Emergency Kit targets 64-bit Windows 10 and later, and AdwCleaner no longer supports Windows 7 or earlier. A tool that runs from USB can still be incompatible with the target operating system.
Will these tools replace Windows Defender?
No. They are on-demand scanners and cleanup utilities. Stinger, MSRT, AdwCleaner, ClamWin, and Safety Scanner have particularly narrow or non-real-time roles. Keep a supported real-time antivirus enabled after cleanup.
How often should a rescue USB be updated?
Update it immediately before use whenever possible. Microsoft Safety Scanner expires after 10 days, Dr.Web CureIt! requires a new download for newer databases, and online tools download components when launched.
