Electric aviation is no longer limited to laboratory demonstrators, but it is not yet a mainstream airline market either. In 2025, the most important progress was happening across several very different categories: certified electric trainers, battery-electric commuter aircraft, hybrid-electric utility planes, and eVTOL air taxis still working through flight testing and certification.
That distinction matters. A prototype flight is not the same as type certification, a pre-order is not a delivery, and a hybrid aircraft is not zero-emission on every route. The ten aircraft and programs below represent the most significant developments in electric aviation during 2025, with each entry labeled by its propulsion system, configuration, and development status.

1. BETA Technologies ALIA CX300
The ALIA CX300 is BETA Technologies’ battery-electric conventional-takeoff-and-landing aircraft. Unlike an eVTOL, it uses a conventional fixed-wing layout and runway operations. BETA designed it to carry up to six people, or 200 cubic feet of cargo with two crew members.

Its published mission range is approximately 215 nautical miles. That makes the aircraft more relevant to short regional flights, cargo routes, and utility operations than to long-haul aviation. Electric propulsion also allows BETA to develop a family of aircraft around a shared power and charging ecosystem.

The CX300 made its Paris Air Show debut in June 2025 while BETA continued work toward FAA certification. It should not be described as FAA type-certified or as operating scheduled passenger flights. In 2025, it remained a certification program rather than a commercial airline aircraft.
Classification: battery-electric CTOL; certification testing; development aircraft.
2. Joby Aviation aircraft
Joby is developing a piloted battery-electric eVTOL air taxi for short urban and regional trips. The aircraft is designed for one pilot and up to four passengers, with a published target of more than 150 miles on a charge and a maximum speed of up to 200 mph.
Its configuration combines distributed electric propulsion with vertical takeoff and landing capability. In practical terms, that could allow a trip to begin at a vertiport rather than a conventional runway, then continue as a wing-borne flight at higher speed.
Joby reported more than 40,000 fleet miles by April 3, 2025. The company also reported five aircraft in its fleet, flights in three countries, and progress beyond the halfway point of the FAA’s fourth certification stage.
Those figures demonstrate substantial test activity, but they do not establish regular commercial passenger service. Joby’s aircraft remained in flight testing and FAA certification during 2025, and earlier service projections should be treated as targets rather than guarantees.
Classification: battery-electric eVTOL; piloted air taxi; flight testing and certification.

3. Archer Aviation Midnight
Archer’s Midnight is a battery-electric eVTOL designed to carry a pilot and up to four passengers. Its propulsion system uses 12 electric motors and propellers, along with redundant battery, propulsion, flight-control, and instrumentation systems.
Redundancy is particularly important for passenger eVTOLs. The aircraft must demonstrate that a single component failure does not create an unacceptable loss of control or lift. That requirement is one reason certification involves much more than showing that a prototype can take off, hover, and land.
Archer had completed FAA Part 135 air-carrier/operator certification, Part 141 pilot-training certification, and Part 145 maintenance certification by 2025. However, those approvals apply to the operating, training, and maintenance organizations. They do not mean that Midnight itself had received type and production certification for commercial passenger operations.

Classification: battery-electric eVTOL; certification in progress; not yet a type-certified passenger aircraft.
4. Heart Aerospace ES-30
The ES-30 is a hybrid-electric regional aircraft designed to carry 30 passengers. It is one of the clearest examples of why “electric aircraft” should not automatically be interpreted as “fully battery-electric aircraft.”
Heart publishes an all-electric range of about 125 miles, or 200 kilometers, and a hybrid range of up to 500 miles, or 800 kilometers. The aircraft’s reserve-hybrid system uses two turbo-generators, allowing electric power to serve shorter routes while combustion-based generation extends the aircraft’s operating range.
On an all-electric route, the ES-30 is intended to produce zero operational CO₂ emissions. Hybrid operation is different: the aircraft still relies on fuel-burning generators, so it is not zero-emission for every mission.
Heart’s current aircraft page lists 2031 for type certification. That supersedes older coverage that repeated an earlier 2028 entry-into-service expectation. The ES-30 was therefore a planned regional aircraft in 2025, not an aircraft entering airline service that year.

5. Vertical Aerospace VX4
Vertical Aerospace’s VX4 is a battery-electric winged eVTOL passenger aircraft. Its development program reached an important milestone in May 2025, when the full-scale prototype completed piloted wingborne flight in open airspace under UK Civil Aviation Authority oversight.
Wingborne flight is significant because an eVTOL must transition between two very different aerodynamic regimes. It needs powered lift for takeoff and landing, then must operate efficiently as a fixed-wing aircraft during forward flight. Vertical reported completion of Phase 3 wingborne testing in September and preparation for transition testing between vertical lift and wingborne flight.
Vertical reaffirmed a 2028 certification target. The successful flight was nevertheless a prototype milestone, not evidence of commercial certification or passenger service. Transition testing, system reliability, battery performance, noise, and regulatory compliance all remain central challenges.
Classification: battery-electric winged eVTOL; flying prototype; certification target of 2028.

6. Pipistrel Velis Electro
The Velis Electro is less dramatic than a nine-seat air taxi or a regional hybrid aircraft, but it occupies an important place in electric aviation because it is certified and usable today as a training and general-aviation platform.
Pipistrel’s two-seat trainer received EASA type certification in 2020. The company describes it as the first type-certified electric-powered aircraft. Its role is primarily flight training, where short lessons and predictable local operations are better suited to the limited endurance of current battery systems.
Calling it the first certified electric aircraft does not mean it was the first electric aircraft in airline service. It is a small two-seat trainer, not a commercial passenger airliner. Its importance is practical: it demonstrates that battery-electric aircraft can move beyond experimental status when the mission, aircraft size, and operating pattern match the technology’s current limits.

7. H55/BRM Aero Bristell B23 Energic
The Bristell B23 Energic is another fully electric two-seat training aircraft, developed around H55’s 104 kW electric propulsion system. H55 publishes endurance of 70 minutes including reserves, a figure aimed at the short training sorties for which the aircraft is intended.
In 2025, H55 reported that the first two years of B23 Energic production planning were sold out following demonstration flights and purchase commitments. European deliveries were listed as beginning in 2026, with North American deliveries planned from 2027.
The program is therefore more commercialized than many electric-aircraft projects, but “sold out” production slots do not mean the aircraft was already operating widely in airline fleets. It is a small pilot-training aircraft with a focused market, not a replacement for conventional regional airliners.

8. Ampaire Eco Caravan
Ampaire’s Eco Caravan is a plug-in hybrid-electric conversion of the Cessna 208B Grand Caravan and EX variants. It is aimed at utility and short regional operations, where reducing fuel use can be valuable even when batteries alone cannot provide the required range or payload.
Ampaire publishes potential fuel savings of 50% to 70% and operating-cost savings of up to 40%. Its product information describes a nine-seat configuration, while a displayed performance target lists up to 11 passengers. Those numbers should not be treated as interchangeable; the exact payload and seating arrangement depend on the configuration being discussed.

- XPILOT STABILIZATION SYSTEM EASY TO FLY XPILOT Stabilization: The Xpilot gyro stabilizer provides ultra-stable self-stabilization for easy flying. The powerful over-grade motor system enables easy control for aerobatic maneuvers.
The Eco Caravan uses a combustion engine as part of its hybrid system. It is therefore not an all-electric airplane and cannot be called zero-emission in normal operation. Ampaire describes it as flying and available for pre-order, but also identifies its specifications as development targets that may change.
Classification: plug-in hybrid-electric utility aircraft; flying development aircraft; available for pre-order.
9. Electra EL9
The Electra EL9 is a nine-passenger hybrid-electric ultra-short-takeoff-and-landing aircraft. Its defining feature is blown-lift propulsion, which is intended to produce enough low-speed lift for takeoff and landing from areas roughly the size of a soccer field.
That capability could open routes from smaller urban or regional sites that lack a conventional runway. It also makes the EL9 a different proposition from a battery-electric eVTOL: the aircraft is designed around hybrid-electric propulsion and ultra-short runway operations rather than pure vertical flight.
Electra submitted an FAA Part 23 type-certification application and reported 2,200 pre-orders in March 2025. The company’s stated targets called for first test flights in 2027, with certification and service entry anticipated in 2029.

The Spirit of Innovation is different from the other entries because it was built as an all-electric technology demonstrator and record aircraft, not as a future production airliner or general-aviation model.
Rolls-Royce reports that the aircraft reached an all-electric speed record of 345.4 mph. The project provided a demanding test environment for high-power electric propulsion, batteries, thermal management, control systems, and high-speed aerodynamics.

Important electric-aircraft stories that need a status correction
Eviation Alice
Eviation’s Alice remains a major electric-aircraft project because it completed its first flight in September 2022. The nine-seat all-electric commuter aircraft has published specifications including a 250-nautical-mile day-VFR range and a maximum operating speed of 260 knots.
Its 2025 status was considerably less positive than older articles suggested. Development was paused in February 2025, most employees were reportedly laid off, and Eviation sought longer-term funding and partnerships. Alice should therefore be described as a significant but paused program, not as an active certification leader approaching commercial service.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Lilium Jet
The Lilium Jet is another aircraft frequently included in older “top electric aircraft” lists alongside outdated claims about 2025 service. Lilium’s German subsidiaries entered insolvency proceedings in November 2024. Its 2025 position should be described as restructuring or uncertain, not as a program on track for normal commercial operations.
What these aircraft reveal about electric aviation
- Small aircraft are reaching certification first. The Velis Electro and B23 Energic operate in the training market, where two-seat capacity and short flights reduce the demands placed on batteries.
- Hybrid propulsion remains essential for larger aircraft. The ES-30, Eco Caravan, and EL9 use combustion-based generation or engines to extend range and support useful payloads.
- eVTOL certification is a separate challenge. Joby, Archer, and Vertical must demonstrate not only electric propulsion but also safe transitions, redundancy, vertiport operations, noise performance, and reliable automated or piloted control systems.
- Battery energy density limits mission design. A battery-electric trainer can be practical for local lessons, while a 30-seat regional aircraft may need hybrid power for longer routes. The technology does not offer the same benefits across every aircraft size.
- Commercial claims need careful reading. A company’s “range,” “pre-orders,” “service target,” or “certification milestone” may refer to a design goal, reservation, forecast, or partial regulatory approval rather than an aircraft available to passengers.
FAQ
Are any electric aircraft commercially certified in 2025?
Yes. The Pipistrel Velis Electro received EASA type certification in 2020 and was one of the clearest examples of a certified battery-electric aircraft in 2025. It is a two-seat trainer, not an airline aircraft. Other programs in the list were still in testing, development, or certification.
Which aircraft on the list are fully electric?
The BETA ALIA CX300, Joby aircraft, Archer Midnight, Vertical VX4, Pipistrel Velis Electro, Bristell B23 Energic, and Rolls-Royce Spirit of Innovation use battery-electric propulsion. The Heart ES-30, Ampaire Eco Caravan, and Electra EL9 are hybrid-electric.
Will electric air taxis enter regular passenger service in 2025?
The major eVTOL programs covered here were still progressing through flight testing and certification during 2025. Joby, Archer, and Vertical had important milestones, but prototype flights, operator approvals, and certification progress should not be confused with regular certified passenger service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy are hybrid-electric aircraft included in a list of electric aircraft?
Hybrid-electric aircraft use electric motors and electric power systems but also retain combustion-based power. They are included because hybrid propulsion may provide useful regional range and payload before batteries alone can support larger commercial aircraft. They are not zero-emission on hybrid-powered missions.
The Bottom Line
The leading electric-aircraft story in 2025 was not the sudden arrival of battery-powered airliners. It was the gradual separation of electric aviation into realistic use cases.
Certified two-seat trainers such as the Velis Electro and B23 Energic show that battery-electric flight is already practical for short local missions. Hybrid aircraft such as the ES-30, Eco Caravan, and EL9 target longer routes by keeping combustion power in the system. Joby, Archer, and Vertical are pursuing a new eVTOL category, but their aircraft still require extensive certification before passenger operations can become routine.
The most accurate way to judge these programs is to ask three questions: what powers the aircraft, what mission is it designed for, and what has actually been certified? By that standard, 2025 was a year of meaningful testing and commercial preparation—not yet the year electric aviation became mainstream.
