Infernogallus jamesi, a turkey-sized dinosaur from the Hell Creek Formation, may have been adapted to process soft, fleshy fruit. That conclusion comes from the animal’s jaw anatomy—not preserved fruit in its stomach—so it remains a scientific hypothesis rather than proof of its last meal.
What the 2026 study found
A 2026 study in Nature Communications examined Infernogallus jamesi, a newly reported caenagnathid that lived about 66 million years ago. Phys.org’s account of the study describes an animal weighing roughly 12 kilograms (26 pounds), about the size of a large turkey, in the Late Cretaceous Hell Creek ecosystem.
Computed-tomography reconstruction and analysis of the jaw muscles indicate that its lower jaw could move backward and forward as well as close vertically. That is a different feeding action from the simple up-and-down bite familiar from many dinosaurs.
A mouth built to mash soft material
Ridges and grooves inside the mouth may have worked together as a grinding surface. The researchers compared the proposed mechanism with the way fruit-eating parrots process food: instead of slicing with rows of teeth, the beak and palate compress and mash it. No stomach stones were found, removing one possible sign of an animal that relied on gastroliths to grind tougher plant matter, although the absence of stones cannot identify a complete diet.

Why fruit is still only a hypothesis
The study authors state: “We hypothesize that Infernogallus jamesi could have been specialized for processing soft, fleshy fruit.” The wording matters. The evidence is anatomical and analogical; it is not a discovery of fruit, seeds or other food remains in a stomach or gut. The same account says the role of these dinosaurs in the Late Cretaceous spread of fruiting plants remains unclear.
How Infernogallus compares with the original “chicken from hell”
The nickname “chicken from hell” belongs to Anzu wyliei, a larger and earlier-described relative. Comparing the two prevents the new fruit-eating claim from being applied to the wrong dinosaur.

| Feature | Infernogallus jamesi | Anzu wyliei |
|---|---|---|
| Approximate size | About 12 kilograms (26 pounds), turkey-sized | About 11 feet long and 5 feet tall at the hip, according to the Smithsonian Institution |
| Jaw and skull evidence | CT-based reconstruction indicates backward-and-forward lower-jaw motion; internal ridges and grooves may have mashed soft food | Toothless beak and skull anatomy indicate an adaptable feeder, but the available evidence does not identify a specialized jaw action comparable to the proposed fruit-processing mechanism |
| Diet evidence | Soft, fleshy fruit specialization proposed from anatomy; no direct stomach-content evidence | Skull evidence is consistent with omnivory, but its preferred foods remain unknown |
| Geological setting | Hell Creek Formation, about 66 million years ago | Upper Maastrichtian Hell Creek Formation of North and South Dakota |
| Taxonomic status | Newly reported caenagnathid species | Established, larger relative that supplied the “chicken from hell” nickname |
The Smithsonian describes Anzu as feathered, toothless and likely omnivorous, while also emphasizing that its favored food has not been established. The peer-reviewed description placed it in the upper Maastrichtian Hell Creek Formation in North and South Dakota. Nothing in the Infernogallus study changes that uncertainty about Anzu.

Why a toothless beak makes diet difficult to identify
Teeth often preserve clues about feeding: their shape, wear and arrangement can distinguish slicing, crushing and grazing. Toothless caenagnathids lack that direct evidence. Scientists must instead combine jaw geometry, muscle attachment sites, the texture of the palate, movement permitted by the joints and comparisons with living animals.

Those methods can show what an animal was mechanically capable of doing, but capability is not the same as a confirmed menu. A jaw that could mash fruit might also have handled other soft foods. Preserved plant material, coprolites, gut contents or distinctive wear would provide independent support; the report does not describe such direct evidence for Infernogallus.

A separate 2024 discovery illustrates why caenagnathid diets and identities have been revised as new fossils are studied. Eoneophron infernalis was initially mistaken for a juvenile Anzu but was recognized as a distinct, smaller species. Oklahoma State University quoted researcher Kyle Atkins-Weltman saying, “It’s hard to tell its diet because of the toothless beak.”

That taxonomic correction matters because a fragment once assigned to a young individual of a known species can represent an entirely different animal. Apparent changes in size, anatomy or ecology may therefore reflect improved species identification rather than a shift in one dinosaur’s life history.

What “fruit-eating dinosaur” means here
- It identifies a proposed specialization: the jaw and palate may have been suited to processing soft, fleshy fruit.
- It does not report a fossilized meal: no fruit was recovered from a stomach, and the conclusion does not come from direct gut contents.
- It applies to Infernogallus jamesi: the headline is not a new diet result for Anzu wyliei.
- It leaves the wider ecosystem question open: how important these dinosaurs were to the Late Cretaceous expansion of fruiting plants is not established.
The bottom line for dinosaur fans
Infernogallus jamesi appears to have had an unusual fore-and-aft jaw motion and a mouth surface that could have mashed soft foods. Those traits make fruit consumption plausible and scientifically interesting, but the strongest accurate wording is still “may have eaten fruit.” The larger “chicken from hell,” Anzu wyliei, remains a probable omnivore with no confirmed favorite food.
