The key difference is how each faction builds and sustains its forces. In the Total War: WARHAMMER II guidance available for Tomb Kings, dynasty research adds army slots while buildings unlock capacity for most units; free skeletons screen for more specialized troops. A legacy Vampire Counts roster guide instead emphasizes vampiric corruption, raising dead to recruit, and armies built around magic and melee rather than ranged weapons. The Vampire Counts details are version-sensitive, and the available sources do not establish which faction is stronger in the current patch.
What this comparison covers
The clearest campaign and battle guidance for Tomb Kings comes from Total War Academy’s Total War: WARHAMMER II – Total War Academy. The Vampire Counts details here come from the legacy Total War Wiki page Vampire Counts Army Roster. That difference matters: Tomb Kings mechanics below are tied to the cited WARHAMMER II guide, while the Vampire Counts mechanics should be checked against the edition and patch you are playing.
This is a comparison of faction systems and battlefield identities, not a current-patch tier list or a direct matchup guide. The sources do not provide current numerical balance data or a complete unit-by-unit comparison, so they cannot support a claim that one faction is categorically stronger.

| How campaign progression adds forces | Researching each of six major Nehekharan dynasties grants another army slot. More dynasty research takes longer; settlement captures improve research speed. Canopic Jars can unlock a stronger dynasty lord. | The cited roster guide emphasizes corruption and raise-dead recruitment; it does not establish an equivalent army-slot progression system. |
| Campaign-map pressure | Rites offer strategic effects including support for stronger armies, ruin colonization, sandstorm attrition against invaders, and regional growth. How Tomb Kings build their campaign armies
Free skeletons do not mean unlimited access to every unit
The Tomb Kings’ basic recruitment rule separates inexpensive numbers from specialist access. Skeleton Warriors and Skeleton Spearmen are free and unlimited basic recruits in the cited guide. They let you form screens and maintain a baseline force without paying to recruit those units. Other units require appropriate buildings, and those buildings grant initial unit capacity.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Capacity is a strategic constraint, not just a building checklist. If you lose a settlement containing a capacity-granting building, your available capacity can fall. The guide says armies already in the field are unaffected, so losing the settlement does not itself erase deployed units. It can, however, restrict your ability to replace losses or recruit more of the affected unit type. This makes settlement defense relevant to force composition as well as territory and income.
Dynasties are the route to more armies
Tomb Kings must awaken more commanders to field more armies. Researching a major Nehekharan dynasty provides an additional army slot, and there are six major dynasties in the guide’s description. Further dynasty research takes longer, while capturing settlements improves research speed. The practical trade-off is that expansion can support the research needed for more armies, but each new army slot depends on campaign progression rather than simply recruiting another lord.
Canopic Jars provide a separate use of campaign resources: the guide says they can be spent to unlock a stronger dynasty lord. That is distinct from the army-slot benefit attached to dynasty research. Plan around what your campaign needs—another army, or access to the stronger lord—rather than treating every dynasty-related choice as interchangeable.

Tomb Kings rites offer several kinds of strategic support. The guide lists effects that support stronger armies, help colonize ruins, inflict sandstorm attrition on invaders, or improve regional growth. These are different tools for different circumstances: military support for an active campaign, colonization help when developing territory, defense against invasion, or growth in a region.
The same guide characterizes the basic Tomb Kings economy as having comparatively limited infrastructure options and recommends building up inexpensive income across regions. That context matters when deciding how quickly to expand or invest in capacity buildings. Free basic skeleton recruitment does not remove the need to manage the campaign economy: specialist recruitment depends on buildings, and new armies still require commanders unlocked through progression.
The Books of Nagash are specific to the Eye of the Vortex objective
In the cited Eye of the Vortex campaign guidance, the Books of Nagash are part of the victory conditions tied to the Black Pyramid. Other factions or rogue armies hold the books, and obtaining them provides varied bonuses. Their bonus effects are randomized at campaign start, so the same book does not necessarily offer the same effect in every campaign.

How Vampire Counts sustain a campaign
Corruption and movement are linked in the legacy account
The legacy Vampire Counts roster guide describes vampiric corruption as a campaign concern: it says travel through uncorrupted terrain causes attrition and recommends sending heroes ahead to spread corruption. If that rule applies in your edition and patch, movement routes and the spread of corruption become part of the same planning problem. A route through friendly or prepared territory may be safer than pushing directly into uncorrupted ground.
Corruption also has province-management consequences in Total War Academy’s broader campaign guidance. Excessive Chaos, Vampiric, or Skaven corruption can cause unrest, attrition, and eventually an uprising. The Academy lists heroes, buildings, lord skills, and garrisoned armies as ways to help manage provincial problems. This is general guidance across corruption types; it does not mean every listed response works identically for every faction or in every edition.
Raise-dead recruitment is not a confirmed one-to-one equivalent to Tomb Kings capacity
The legacy roster page describes raising the dead both as a way to create units during battle and as a way to recruit full units on the campaign map. That is a different recruitment emphasis from the Tomb Kings guide’s clearly described building-based capacity for most non-basic units. However, the roster page is a legacy source, and the available material does not establish the exact conditions, limits, or current implementation of raise-dead recruitment. Check the in-game faction mechanics for the version you intend to play.
How the armies differ in battle
Tomb Kings: use skeletons to hold, then let specialists do their jobs
Total War Academy describes Tomb Kings skeletons as numerous but fragile. Skeleton Warriors and Skeleton Spearmen are best treated as a screen that occupies enemies and protects more valuable troops, not as units expected to deal heavy damage. The guide’s tactical point is straightforward: use the basic infantry to hold the line while the rest of the army performs the roles that need more specialized units.

Tomb Kings forces include both undead and constructs, and the distinction matters because some abilities apply to one category. The guide also gives role-specific examples among large units: use a Warsphinx against infantry and a Necrosphinx against monsters or cavalry. Chariots benefit from their larger unit sizes but can become trapped in dense infantry, so avoid sending them into a congested melee where they cannot maneuver effectively.
Vampire Counts: pressure through melee, magic, flanks, and air
The legacy roster guide’s most distinctive claim is that Vampire Counts have no ranged weapons. It describes a force that instead relies on magic and melee pressure, with fast cavalry for flanking, terror-causing units, and flying threats. It also notes panic immunity and solid infantry. Taken together, this is a broad army identity: create pressure through close combat and battlefield disruption rather than a ranged line.
That identity suggests a different set of tactical questions from the Tomb Kings guide. For Tomb Kings, ask whether skeletons are holding long enough for constructs or specialists to act, and whether a large unit is facing an appropriate target. For Vampire Counts, the legacy roster description points toward how melee, magic, flanking, terror, and flying units can create pressure. It does not supply current unit stats or establish which combinations are strongest in a particular patch.
Practical campaign planning: what to do with each faction
A Tomb Kings planning sequence
- Secure the buildings that provide the capacity you need. Basic skeletons are available without that infrastructure, but specialist forces are not. Before abandoning or exposing a settlement, remember that losing a capacity building can reduce future recruitment even though deployed armies remain on the map.
- Choose the next dynasty with army slots in mind. Each major Nehekharan dynasty researched in the cited guide adds an army slot. Longer research times make the order of progression meaningful, while captured settlements improve research speed.
- Separate the Canopic Jar decision from the army-slot decision. Jars can unlock a stronger dynasty lord; they do not replace the army-slot benefit of dynasty research. Decide whether your immediate bottleneck is commanders or lord quality.
- Use rites according to the campaign problem. A rite that supports stronger armies is different from one that helps colonize ruins, punishes invading forces with sandstorm attrition, or improves regional growth. Activating a rite should answer a specific strategic need rather than being treated as a generic power boost.
- Build income across regions. The Academy characterizes the basic economy as comparatively limited and recommends inexpensive income construction. That makes a broad, steady economic base important even when basic infantry recruitment is free.
A Vampire Counts planning sequence
- Check the edition’s corruption rules. The legacy roster says uncorrupted terrain causes attrition and suggests sending heroes ahead to spread corruption. Because this is an older source, confirm the rule and its severity in the campaign you are playing.
- Plan routes, not just destinations. If uncorrupted ground still causes attrition, a direct march may be more costly than preparing the route. Corruption management becomes part of deciding where an army can safely operate.
- Use raise-dead information cautiously. The roster page describes both battlefield creation and campaign-map recruitment of full units, but it does not establish the current limits, requirements, or exact interface. Treat the in-game panel as authoritative for your version.
- Protect provinces from excessive corruption effects. Academy guidance warns that excessive Chaos, Vampiric, or Skaven corruption can produce unrest, attrition, and an eventual uprising. Heroes, buildings, lord skills, and garrisoned armies are listed as management tools, subject to faction and edition differences.
- Design around pressure rather than a ranged exchange. The cited roster identity emphasizes magic, melee infantry, fast flanking cavalry, terror, panic immunity, and flying units. Your battle plan therefore needs ways to reach, pin, disrupt, or outflank an opponent instead of assuming a conventional missile line.
Army-building questions that matter most
Does free Tomb Kings infantry make their armies cheap? It removes the recruitment cost for the two basic skeleton types in the cited guide, but it does not provide unlimited capacity for constructs or other specialist units. Buildings, income, and dynasty progression still determine how sophisticated an army can become.
Are Tomb Kings constructs simply stronger versions of skeletons? No. They fill different battlefield roles, and the guide distinguishes undead from constructs because some abilities affect only one category. Skeletons screen and hold; units such as Warsphinxes and Necrosphinxes are selected for particular targets.
Can Vampire Counts replace casualties anywhere? The legacy page says raise-dead can recruit full units on the campaign map, but the reviewed material does not specify universal availability, limits, or current costs. Do not assume every province or battle offers the same recruitment options.

Which faction has ranged superiority? The cited Vampire Counts roster says they have no ranged weapons. The Tomb Kings material here does not provide a complete ranged-unit inventory or a numerical comparison, so this article cannot declare a faction-wide ranged ranking. The safe contrast is Vampire Counts’ stated melee-and-magic identity versus Tomb Kings’ screen-and-construct structure.
Does corruption always help Vampire Counts? No. The Academy warns that excessive corruption of several types can create unrest, attrition, and uprisings. Corruption can support faction movement and control in some systems, but unmanaged levels can also destabilize provinces.
Are the Books of Nagash required in every Tomb Kings campaign? The cited objective is specifically the Eye of the Vortex campaign and ties the books to the Black Pyramid. The material does not justify applying that victory condition to every campaign mode.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which faction fits the campaign or army style you want?
- Choose Tomb Kings if you want progression tied to army slots and unit capacity. The cited guide makes dynasty research, settlement development, and building-based capacity central to how their forces grow.
- Choose Tomb Kings if you like a clear division between screens and specialists. Basic skeletons hold space; constructs and other specialized large units take more demanding roles.
- Choose Vampire Counts if corruption and raise-dead recruitment appeal to you. Those are the defining campaign systems in the legacy roster guide, but verify their exact operation in your game version.
- Choose Vampire Counts if you prefer a melee- and magic-led battlefield identity. The cited roster describes no ranged weapons and highlights flanking cavalry, terror, and flying units.
- Do not choose solely on an assumed strength ranking. The sources support a comparison of systems and roles, not a current-patch verdict on balance or direct matchup outcomes.
What to verify before applying this comparison
The article’s Tomb Kings campaign and tactical details are grounded in Total War Academy material for Total War: WARHAMMER II. The Vampire Counts roster material is from a legacy Total War Wiki page. In particular, check the game edition and patch before relying on the roster page’s statements about attrition in uncorrupted terrain, spreading corruption with heroes, or raising dead during battle and on the campaign map. The available material does not establish current numerical rankings, unit-by-unit matchup results, or a universal rule for the Books of Nagash across campaign modes.
If you are buying the game specifically to try these campaigns, a physical copy of Total War: WARHAMMER II for PC is one option to investigate. Confirm the edition, platform compatibility, availability, and any current storefront terms before purchasing; those details are not established here.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Tomb Kings or Vampire Counts easier for a new campaign?
The cited material does not rank campaign difficulty. Tomb Kings present a clear progression puzzle involving dynasty research, army slots, capacity buildings, rites, and a limited basic economy. Vampire Counts emphasize corruption and raise-dead systems whose exact operation depends on the edition and patch, so the better choice depends on which mechanics you find easier to manage.

Why do Tomb Kings still need capacity buildings if skeletons are free?
Skeleton Warriors and Skeleton Spearmen are the free, unlimited basic recruits described by Total War Academy. Most other units require appropriate buildings that provide initial capacity. Losing one of those settlements can reduce future capacity even though armies already deployed remain unaffected.
How should Tomb Kings use skeleton infantry in battle?
Use Skeleton Warriors and Skeleton Spearmen to hold enemies, screen valuable troops, and buy time. The guide describes them as numerous but fragile and not suited to doing heavy damage. Let constructs and other specialized units handle demanding targets.
What is the main Vampire Counts army difference?
The legacy roster guide says Vampire Counts have no ranged weapons. It instead highlights magic, melee infantry, fast flanking cavalry, terror-causing units, panic immunity, and flying units. This is a broad identity description, not a current unit-tier ranking.
Does Vampire Counts corruption cause attrition everywhere?
The legacy roster page says uncorrupted terrain causes attrition and recommends sending heroes ahead to spread corruption. Because that page is a legacy source, verify the rule, limits, and severity in the specific game edition and patch you play.
Are Books of Nagash part of every Tomb Kings victory?
No universal rule is established here. The cited guidance places the Books of Nagash in the Eye of the Vortex campaign’s objectives tied to the Black Pyramid, with bonuses randomized at campaign start. Do not automatically apply that objective to other campaign modes.
The Bottom Line
Tomb Kings are progression- and capacity-driven: free skeletons form the screen, dynasty research adds armies, buildings unlock specialist capacity, and constructs handle the decisive battlefield roles. Vampire Counts are described as corruption- and raise-dead-focused: their legacy roster identity centers on magic, melee, flanking, terror, and flying units rather than ranged weapons. Check the game edition and patch for Vampire Counts mechanics, and choose by campaign systems and battlefield style rather than an unsupported strength ranking.
