Prompt or token caching usually cuts AI-coding costs sooner than buying a larger context window. Caching discounts input that is reused within a cache lifetime, while a larger window only lets one request contain more code and history. Use caching for a stable repository prefix and repeated turns; use a larger window when the task genuinely requires many files at once. Measure cache hits, long-context pricing, latency and output tokens before standardizing either approach.
The cost question in one sentence
Caching and context windows solve different constraints. A cache can make the same 20,000-token repository instructions and code prefix inexpensive on later requests. A larger context window can fit 200,000 or 1 million tokens in one request, but those tokens are still billed under that model’s input rates and may incur long-context multipliers. The cheapest design is therefore the one that matches your workload’s reuse pattern and per-request code requirement.
What token caching actually does
Repeated input is read at a discount
Prompt caching stores a recently seen prefix—such as system instructions, tool definitions, a repository map and common source files—so subsequent requests can read those tokens at a lower rate and often with faster processing. The changing user request, tool output and current task can follow the cached prefix.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →This is different from storing an answer or skipping model execution. The model still processes the current request and generates a new response. The saving applies to eligible input tokens that match the cached prefix. If a prompt changes near its beginning, the matching portion can shrink and the expected discount can disappear.

The cache has a lifetime and a minimum size
OpenAI’s 2024 announcement described automatic caching beginning at 1,024 tokens, growing in 128-token increments. It said caches were typically cleared after 5–10 minutes of inactivity and removed within one hour of the last use. Current model policies can differ, so treat those figures as policy-specific rather than a permanent guarantee.
Minimums matter in practice. A 900-token instruction block may receive no automatic-cache treatment on a model requiring 1,024 tokens, while adding a stable repository map can push it over the threshold. Thresholds are evaluated by provider and model, not by how large the overall context window is.
Writes can cost more than ordinary input
A first request may pay a cache-write premium. The economic question is not whether a cache read is cheap—it usually is—but whether enough reads occur before the entry expires to recover that first write cost. A session that sends one request and closes may be better off with ordinary input pricing. A debugging session that sends ten turns in a few minutes can amortize the write quickly.
What a larger context window changes
Capacity, not an automatic discount
A 1-million-token window lets a model consider substantially more code, history or generated documentation in one call. It does not inherently reduce the price of those input tokens. Sending a giant prompt on every turn can cost more than retrieving only the relevant files, even when the model supports that window.
Capacity can still have economic value. If a refactor requires interfaces, implementations, tests, configuration and deployment files together, repeatedly searching for each dependency may require extra model calls, retrieval operations and summaries. The larger window is worthwhile when the avoided work costs more than the additional input tokens and the answer quality improves.
Long-context pricing can dominate
OpenAI’s enterprise rate card lists, for specified products and requests above 272,000 input tokens, a 2× multiplier for standard input, a 2× multiplier for cached input and a 1.5× multiplier for output; model and product exceptions apply. A cache discount therefore does not necessarily eliminate the cost of crossing a long-context tier.
Check the threshold against the complete request, not merely the reusable prefix. A 100,000-token cached repository plus a 180,000-token changing history can cross a 272,000-token boundary even though the repository itself is a stable cache hit. At that point, both ordinary and cached input may be priced under the higher tier in products covered by the rate card.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsQuality and latency are part of the decision
Putting every file into one prompt can reduce retrieval and summarization work, but it can also increase time to first token, input cost and distraction from the relevant code. A smaller, well-selected context may produce a better answer at lower total cost. Conversely, aggressive trimming can hide an interface or test fixture and cause a faulty patch, making retries more expensive than the tokens saved.

Published pricing mechanics you can use
| Provider or policy | Published cache terms | How to interpret them |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI current developer guide | For GPT-5.6 and later examples, cache writes cost 1.25× standard input and cache reads cost 0.1× on most listed models. | One write plus nine full reads costs 2.15 input-price units, versus 10 units without caching. |
| Anthropic current Claude Platform pricing | Many models list a 1.25× multiplier for a 5-minute write, 2× for a 1-hour write and 0.1× for a cache hit. | Under those multipliers, one read repays a 5-minute write; two reads repay a 1-hour write. |
| Google AI for Developers | Implicit caching is enabled by default for Gemini 2.5 and newer models. Minimum input thresholds include 2,048 tokens for Gemini 2.5 Flash and Pro and 4,096 tokens for several newer models. | Prompts below a model’s threshold may not receive implicit-cache treatment. |
| Anthropic context policy | Claude 4.6 and later models, except Claude Haiku 5.5, include a 1-million-token context window at standard pricing; cache and batch discounts still apply. | Large capacity is available without a stated long-context surcharge in this policy, but the normal input volume still costs money. |
These figures are multipliers, not universal dollar prices. Convert them using the selected model’s current input rate, then add output, tool and retrieval charges. A model change can alter the write premium, read discount, minimum length or long-context rule without changing your application code.
How many requests until caching pays for itself?
Use a workload-specific break-even calculation
Let P be the reusable prefix in tokens, r the cache-read multiplier, w the cache-write multiplier and n the number of requests that reuse the prefix before expiry. Ignoring output and changing suffixes, uncached input costs n × P price units. Cached input costs approximately w × P + (n − 1) × r × P. Include provider minimums, rounding, TTL misses and any long-context multiplier when you run the real calculation.
For example, with a 20,000-token prefix, a 1.25× write and a 0.1× read, ten requests cost about 43,000 standard-input token units when the first request writes and the next nine hit: 1.25 × 20,000 + 9 × 0.1 × 20,000. Sending the same prefix uncached costs 200,000 units. That comparison excludes each request’s changing suffix and output, so it is a way to isolate prefix economics rather than a final invoice.

OpenAI’s worked assumptions
OpenAI’s current guide uses a 1,024-token minimum, a 0.1 read multiplier and a 1.25 write multiplier. Across 10 requests, it states that expanding an original prefix of at least 221 tokens to the 1,024-token cache minimum is cheaper under those assumptions. The same guide’s 10-request example—one write and nine reads—costs 2.15 input-price units instead of 10, before output tokens and other prompt portions.
Anthropic’s duration-specific payback
With Anthropic’s listed 1.25× five-minute write and 0.1× hit, the first subsequent read is enough to recover the write premium. With a 2× one-hour write, two cache reads are needed under the stated multipliers. If your coding session pauses longer than the selected duration, the next request may be another write.
Why there is no universal percentage
Real savings vary with reusable-prefix share, request spacing, cache misses, model rates, output length and long-context tiers. Official provider material does not establish a cross-provider percentage showing that caching always beats a larger context window for coding.
Choose by these five workload variables
| Question | Favors caching | Favors a larger window |
|---|---|---|
| How much input repeats? | A large, stable repository prefix, system prompt or tool schema repeats on many turns. | Most files change between requests, so little prefix can be reused. |
| How close together are requests? | Interactive work produces several requests inside the cache TTL. | Requests are sporadic and usually arrive after expiry. |
| How much code must be visible at once? | Each task touches a focused module or can use retrieval. | Refactors span many interdependent files that must be considered together. |
| What are the model’s thresholds and multipliers? | The prefix exceeds the minimum and reads are heavily discounted. | The model offers a large window at ordinary rates and avoids a severe long-context surcharge. |
| What does latency require? | Cached prefixes are processed faster and the suffix is small. | One comprehensive call is faster than multiple retrieval, summarization and follow-up calls. |
Build a cache-friendly coding prompt
- Put stable material first. Start with role and safety instructions, coding conventions, tool definitions, the repository map and the commonly referenced files.
- Append volatile material last. Place the current issue, branch state, test output, tool results and requested change after the reusable prefix.
- Keep byte-for-byte structure stable where possible. Reordering files, changing whitespace or inserting a timestamp early in the prompt can prevent a prefix match.
- Keep the prefix above the provider minimum. OpenAI’s documented automatic threshold starts at 1,024 tokens; Google documents 2,048-token thresholds for Gemini 2.5 Flash and Pro and 4,096 for several newer models.
- Send similar prefixes close together. Google specifically recommends placing large common content at the beginning and sending similar prefixes near one another to improve implicit-cache hit probability.
- Trim stale repository content. A cache does not make irrelevant files useful. Remove generated artifacts, old logs and duplicate copies that inflate every request.
Example layout
A practical sequence is: system instructions, coding standards, tool schemas, repository tree, shared types, the module under review, then the issue description, latest diff, test failures and tool output. If the same branch is reviewed again, the first portion remains reusable while only the tail changes. If a file is frequently edited, keep it in the volatile section unless the provider’s cache behavior and your measured hit rate show that moving it earlier is beneficial.
When a larger window is the better engineering choice
Cross-file architectural changes
If an API migration touches interfaces, implementations, tests, configuration and deployment manifests, repeatedly retrieving fragments may create more calls and more opportunities to omit a dependency. A single large-context request can be justified when the model’s quality and latency remain acceptable.

Large one-off analysis
For a single audit, migration plan or license review, there may be no second request inside a cache TTL. Paying ordinary input rates for one comprehensive context can be simpler than designing a cache that will not be reused.
Models with a million-token window at standard rates
Anthropic says Claude 4.6 and later models, except Claude Haiku 5.5, include a 1-million-token context window at standard pricing. That removes a separate long-context price tier in the stated policy, but it does not make sending 1 million tokens free; compare the actual token count with a retrieval-based design.
When retrieval overhead is the hidden bill
A retrieval-first architecture can issue embedding searches, file reads, summaries and follow-up calls before the coding model produces a patch. Count those operations, their input and output tokens, and the latency they add. If a comprehensive window eliminates several such steps for a high-value change, its higher single-call input cost may still be lower per completed task.

Interactive repository sessions
Code review, debugging and pair-programming sessions often reuse the same instructions, repository map and source files across many short turns. A discounted read on that stable prefix can reduce each subsequent request while preserving a smaller, focused volatile suffix.
Tool-heavy agents
Agents commonly resend tool schemas and operating rules on every call. Keeping those definitions in the reusable prefix can produce cache hits even when the latest tool result changes.
Teams with predictable bursts
If developers send several requests within five minutes, the short cache duration can be enough. If work arrives hourly, choose a longer duration only after checking whether its write premium is recovered by the expected number of reads.
Measure realized cost instead of relying on list prices
Instrument every request and store these fields:
- Total input tokens and output tokens.
- Cached-read tokens and cache-write tokens.
- Cache-hit rate and the reusable-prefix length.
- Time between requests and time to first token.
- Model, context-window tier and any long-context multiplier.
- Dollar cost for the complete request, including retries and retrieval calls.
Compute cost per successful coding task, not just cost per API call. A strategy that saves input tokens but adds three retrieval calls, longer latency or more failed patches may be more expensive end to end. Recalculate when a provider changes model pricing, cache TTLs, minimum thresholds or context-window policy.
Use a controlled comparison
Replay the same representative tasks with three configurations: a focused prompt without caching, the same prompt with a stable cached prefix, and a larger-window prompt containing all required files. Keep the model, requested output and test procedure constant. Compare successful patches, retries, latency, total input and output tokens, and dollars per accepted change. Include both a rapid burst and a session with realistic pauses so the cache’s expiration behavior is visible.

Common failure modes and fixes
The cache hit rate is low
Cause: volatile text appears before stable content, or prompts are reordered between calls. Fix: move repository instructions and tools to the front, normalize the layout and append changing state at the end.
The cache never reaches break-even
Cause: requests are too far apart, the prefix is below the minimum or sessions end after one call. Fix: use a shorter prefix, select a duration that matches request spacing or use ordinary input pricing for one-off tasks.
A cached large prompt is still expensive
Cause: the request crossed a long-context tier. Fix: track the threshold and multiplier separately; retrieve only the files needed for the current change or split the task when quality permits.
Answers degrade after aggressive trimming
Cause: the model lost interfaces, tests or configuration needed to reason about a change. Fix: retain dependency-critical files and use a larger window for the specific operation rather than shrinking every request.
Output dominates the bill
Cause: long generated patches, explanations or repeated test logs outweigh input savings. Fix: measure output tokens independently, request concise diffs where appropriate and avoid treating input caching as a complete cost strategy.
Cache accounting is mistaken for quality accounting
Cause: a lower token bill is treated as proof that the workflow is better, even when defects or review time rise. Fix: pair cost metrics with test pass rate, accepted-patch rate, rollback rate and developer time.
A practical policy for coding teams
- Start with a stable, cacheable prefix containing instructions, tools, a repository map and high-use code.
- Run a representative session long enough to include normal pauses and retries.
- Compare cached-prefix cost with a retrieval or larger-window alternative for the same completed task.
- Adopt the larger window only where multi-file visibility measurably improves quality or reduces total calls.
- Set alerts for cache-hit rate, input-token growth, long-context tier crossings and cost per successful change.
The result is usually a hybrid: cache the stable foundation, send only relevant changing context, and reserve a large window for changes whose correctness depends on seeing many files simultaneously.

Does prompt caching make coding with large codebases cheaper?
It can, when a substantial repository prefix is reused across requests within its TTL. The discount applies to matching input tokens, not to every token in every request. Measure cache-write tokens, cache-read tokens, misses, output and retrieval work to determine the actual saving.

Should I use a 1-million-token context window or cache my prompts?
Use caching first for repeated instructions, tools, repository maps and common files. Use a 1-million-token window when a task genuinely needs many interdependent files at once or when retrieval would add more calls and latency. Anthropic’s stated policy gives Claude 4.6 and later models, except Claude Haiku 5.5, a 1-million-token window at standard pricing, but the input volume still has a cost.
Is a bigger context window worth the extra token cost?
Only if the added visibility improves correctness or eliminates enough retrieval, summarization and follow-up work to offset the additional input. Check whether the request crosses a long-context multiplier, and compare cost per successful coding task rather than cost per call.
How many requests until prompt caching pays for itself?
There is no universal number. Under OpenAI’s example multipliers of 1.25× for a write and 0.1× for reads, one write plus nine reads costs 2.15 input-price units instead of 10. Anthropic lists one read to recover a 5-minute write premium and two reads to recover a 1-hour write premium under its stated multipliers.

What should go inside the cached prefix?
Put stable system instructions, coding conventions, tool definitions, the repository map and frequently reused source files first. Put the current issue, branch state, test output, tool results and other changing material after that prefix.
Why did my cache hit rate fall after a prompt change?
A reordered file list, changed whitespace or a timestamp near the beginning can alter the reusable prefix. Keep the layout stable, move volatile fields to the end and send similar prefixes close together. Google specifically recommends large common content at the beginning for implicit caching.
Can caching remove long-context surcharges?
Not necessarily. OpenAI’s enterprise rate card lists a 2× standard-input and 2× cached-input multiplier above 272,000 input tokens for specified products, with exceptions. A cache discount does not automatically prevent a higher context tier from applying.
What metrics should an engineering team monitor?
Track total, cached-read and cache-write input tokens; output tokens; cache-hit rate; prefix length; request intervals; time to first token; model and context tier; retries; retrieval calls; and dollars per successful change. Recheck the calculation whenever provider pricing, TTLs or thresholds change.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Cache stable repository context when requests repeat within the provider’s lifetime and the prefix clears its minimum. Choose a larger context window when one task truly requires broad, simultaneous visibility and that choice reduces retrieval work or improves correctness. A measured hybrid—cached foundation, focused changing context, and selective large-window calls—usually controls AI coding cost better than either strategy alone.
