The claim that a paper-saving change to a mainframe ruined a week of work is not verified by the available sources. A 1977 CERN notice does document printer changes intended to save paper, but it does not report lost work, a failure, or any disruption. Without an identified account of the alleged incident, its cause and impact cannot responsibly be stated as fact.
What is known about the paper-saving change?
A CERN Computer Centre notice dated 7 March 1977 described modifications to printer settings. It said automatic page eject would print 61 lines per page, while suppressing page eject would allow 64 lines per page. The notice also described exceptions and ways to request the older, larger paper format. These are printer-format details, not evidence that a change destroyed or erased work. Does another mainframe account verify the lost week?
No. Other accounts in the available record describe different events and cannot be combined with CERN’s printer notice to reconstruct this claim.
- InfoWorld’s “The ghost who sabotaged the mainframe” recounts a difficult conversion involving a Honeywell Model 120 and says the conversion finished within a week. It does not connect the trouble to paper-saving printer settings or say a week of work was ruined. The retrieved account does not establish its publication timing or underlying circumstances.
- The Register’s 19 April 2024 reader-contributed account describes a trainee taking a mainframe storage device offline and a colleague reconnecting it promptly. It is not about printer changes or a week of lost work.
Why can’t the headline be treated as established history?
The available sources do not identify the organization, mainframe, paper-saving change, failure, affected work, recovery, or a participant’s account for the alleged incident. IEEE Spectrum’s history of IBM System/360 notes that moving to a larger system could require rewriting software because programs for one machine would not necessarily run on another. Until an original story, contemporaneous record, or named participant’s account identifies the incident, the headline should be understood as an unverified claim—not as a documented report of a mainframe failure.
