The compound behind the headline is 1,3,5-trinitro-2,4,6-trinitroaminobenzene, or TNTNB. A 2022 Science Advances study reported a heat of detonation of 7,179 kJ/kg and a detonation velocity of 9,510 m/s, comparing TNTNB with hexanitrobenzene (HNB) and CL-20. Those figures describe the study’s reported results; they do not establish a current, all-time ranking or practical handling safety.
What the study called the record
The 2022 paper presented TNTNB as a fully nitrated benzene-based energetic material and reported its performance as exceeding the listed comparison values for HNB and CL-20 on two measures: heat of detonation and detonation velocity. The “record” framing belongs to that study. The available sources do not establish that TNTNB remains the record-holder across energetic-material research as of 2026.
TNTNB’s reported density was 1.964 g/cm³ at 298 K. Density is a separate property from heat of detonation and detonation velocity, so it should not be treated as another record claim based on these figures.
How TNTNB compares with HNB and CL-20

All values in the table are those reported by the authors of the 2022 study. The study’s numbers show why TNTNB drew attention: it has the highest listed heat of detonation and velocity among these three entries. They do not, by themselves, establish how TNTNB performs in every context or against every energetic material.

What the stability comparison does—and does not—show
The authors describe HNB as very unstable and report that it can decompose in moist air. They report TNTNB as more chemically stable than HNB in water, acids, and bases. This is a relative comparison of chemical stability in the conditions discussed by the paper, not a general safety assessment. It does not establish that TNTNB is safe to handle, stable under all conditions, or suitable for practical use.
Why figures for other polynitrobenzenes are not direct comparisons
A separate 2018 RSC Advances paper studied other polynitrobenzene derivatives, reporting calculated detonation velocities of 6.55–7.50 km/s and detonation pressures of 18.53–24.67 GPa for those compounds. It also reported thermal decomposition temperatures ranging from 132 to 314 °C. These are results for different molecules, not additional measurements of TNTNB, and should not be used as direct TNTNB values or as a ranking against the 2022 paper’s entries.

How to read the headline responsibly
- Attribute the record claim to the 2022 study rather than presenting it as a verified current ranking.
- Keep the measured or calculated property attached to each number: heat of detonation, detonation velocity, density, or another stated quantity.
- Do not infer handling safety or real-world suitability from performance metrics or a relative stability finding.
