There is no single universal winner. The right framework depends on whether you need legally required European reporting, a broad account of impacts on people and the environment, or a management-and-investor view of nature-related dependencies, risks and opportunities.

CSRD is the legal directive; companies within its scope report using the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), including ESRS E4 for biodiversity and ecosystems. TNFD is a voluntary set of nature-related recommendations. GRI 101: Biodiversity 2024 is a global topic standard focused on an organization’s biodiversity impacts. Their mappings can reduce duplicate work, but none of the instruments automatically substitutes for another.

The short answer: choose by obligation and reporting lens

Start by checking whether your organization is in scope of the European Union’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). If it is, the applicable ESRS requirements are the baseline legal reporting duty. ESRS uses double materiality, so a company must consider both how sustainability matters affect the company and how the company affects people and the environment.

Use GRI 101 when the central question is, “What significant biodiversity impacts does our organization have, including impacts on people and human rights?” Use TNFD when the central question is, “How does nature support or threaten our business, and how should we govern, assess and disclose those dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities?” A company can use all three: ESRS for mandatory EU reporting, GRI to deepen impact reporting, and TNFD to organize nature-related risk management and investor communication.

The exact CSRD scope for a particular legal entity, group, subsidiary or non-EU company depends on current EU law and the organization’s facts. This article explains the frameworks and their documented correspondence; it is not a legal determination of scope.

What each framework actually is

TNFD: voluntary recommendations for nature-related decision-making

The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) provides voluntary recommendations for identifying, assessing, managing and disclosing nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities. Its structure has four pillars:

  • Governance: how the board and management oversee nature-related matters.
  • Strategy: how dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities affect the business model, strategy and financial planning.
  • Risk and impact management: the processes used to identify, assess, prioritize and manage nature-related issues.
  • Metrics and targets: measures and goals used to track nature-related performance and progress.

TNFD permits a flexible materiality approach so an organization can explain both nature-related financial considerations and its outward impacts. It is designed as a management and disclosure framework rather than a biodiversity-only impact standard.

GRI 101: Biodiversity 2024

GRI 101: Biodiversity 2024 is the Global Reporting Initiative’s biodiversity topic standard. Published on 25 January 2024, it replaces GRI 304: Biodiversity 2016. It sits within the broader GRI Standards system, which covers impacts on the economy, environment and people.

GRI’s lens is impact-focused. A report prepared with GRI 101 is intended to explain significant biodiversity impacts, including the effects of activities and value-chain relationships and the implications for affected communities and human rights. GRI 101 is not a legal directive and is not limited to European companies.

CSRD and ESRS: the EU legal reporting context

CSRD is an EU directive that establishes who must provide sustainability information and how that information fits into corporate reporting. The reporting content is set by the European Sustainability Reporting Standards, or ESRS. ESRS E4 covers biodiversity and ecosystems. Other environmental standards, including E2 through E5, address pollution, water and marine resources, resource use and circular economy, and biodiversity and ecosystems; climate is addressed separately in ESRS E1.

For an entity within CSRD scope, ESRS is not an optional framework choice. The company must apply the standards relevant to its circumstances and materiality assessment. ESRS requires double materiality: financial materiality and impact materiality are considered together.

Best fit Nature-related governance, risk management and investor communication. Transparent impact reporting for stakeholders and affected people. Compliant sustainability reporting for companies covered by CSRD.

How their biodiversity lenses differ

Dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities in TNFD

TNFD starts with the relationship between nature and the enterprise. A company may depend on water availability, soil fertility, pollination, coastal protection or other ecosystem services. Its operations may also drive ecosystem degradation, habitat conversion, pollution or species loss. Those dependencies and impacts can create physical, transition or systemic risks, as well as opportunities for resilience, restoration or new products and services.

This approach helps a board connect a site-level biodiversity issue with strategy, capital allocation and risk controls. It does not mean that every TNFD disclosure is identical to an ESRS disclosure or that a TNFD report satisfies a legal filing.

Significant impacts in GRI 101

GRI asks an organization to report its significant impacts and the way those impacts are managed. The emphasis is outward: what happens to ecosystems, species, communities and rights holders because of the organization’s activities or business relationships. That makes GRI useful when stakeholders want a clear account of consequences, not only an investor-oriented risk narrative.

Double materiality in ESRS E4

ESRS E4 applies the double-materiality logic required across ESRS. A biodiversity matter can be material because the company causes or contributes to significant impacts, because nature-related changes could affect the company financially, or because both conditions apply. The assessment must be tied to the entity’s activities and value chain and supported by the information required by the applicable ESRS provisions.

What the official mappings do—and do not—prove

Interoperability work is useful for building one evidence base and reusing disclosures. It is not a declaration that the frameworks are interchangeable.

Mapping Documented conclusion Practical implication
TNFD–GRI interoperability mapping, version 1.0 (July 2024) GRI 101 disclosures are reflected in TNFD. TNFD disclosures are reflected in GRI except disclosures that exclusively address identification and assessment of nature-related risks and opportunities. A GRI-based impact inventory can support TNFD reporting, but TNFD’s risk-and-opportunity assessment may require additional work.
TNFD–EFRAG correspondence mapping (last updated July 2024) All 14 TNFD disclosures are reflected in ESRS. The mapping also indicates that the TNFD LEAP approach may be used in ESRS materiality assessment for biodiversity and other environmental matters. An ESRS reporter can use TNFD concepts and LEAP work as inputs, while still checking every applicable ESRS requirement.

The mappings cover the versions identified above. They show correspondence between disclosure concepts, not legal equivalence, identical definitions or identical data requirements. A preparer must still review the current standards, determine which disclosures apply and document any additional requirements.

“The ongoing collaboration of GRI with the TNFD has resulted in this detailed mapping tool, supporting thousands of organizations worldwide that already report their biodiversity impacts using the GRI Standards.”

— Bastian Buck, Chief Standards Officer at GRI

“The release of today’s mapping from GRI and the TNFD will further support market participants needing, or wanting, to report on their nature-related dependencies and impacts leveraging GRI Standards and metrics and in line with the TNFD Recommendations.”

How LEAP can connect the work

TNFD’s LEAP approach gives organizations a way to locate and assess nature-related issues before deciding what to disclose. GRI 101 references LEAP, and the TNFD–EFRAG mapping says ESRS permits its use in materiality assessment for biodiversity and other environmental matters.

In practice, LEAP can serve as a shared investigation process: identify relevant locations and interfaces with nature, evaluate dependencies and impacts, assess resulting risks and opportunities, then prepare governance, metrics and disclosures. The output still has to be translated into the terminology, datapoints and materiality conclusions required by the chosen reporting system.

Which framework should your organization use?

If you may be in CSRD scope

  1. Confirm the entity and group’s scope under current EU and national rules with qualified legal or reporting advisers.
  2. Perform the ESRS double-materiality assessment, including biodiversity and ecosystems under E4.
  3. Use TNFD or LEAP methods to structure location, dependency, impact, risk and opportunity analysis where helpful.
  4. Use GRI 101 to strengthen impact disclosures and stakeholder-facing explanations, provided the resulting information is reconciled to ESRS requirements.

If you are outside CSRD scope and need impact transparency

GRI 101 is usually the clearest starting point when the purpose is to explain significant biodiversity impacts to communities, employees, customers, civil-society groups and other stakeholders. Add TNFD processes if investors, lenders or management need a systematic view of nature-related risks and opportunities.

If investors or the board are asking about nature-related risk

TNFD is designed for this question. Organize governance, strategy, risk and impact management, and metrics and targets around the company’s dependencies and impacts. A GRI 101 impact inventory can supply important evidence, especially for affected locations and communities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you operate across jurisdictions

Build one controlled data model rather than three separate reporting projects. Map each site, activity, value-chain relationship, impact, dependency, risk, opportunity, metric and target to the relevant TNFD, GRI 101 and ESRS E4 requirements. Flag disclosures that have no direct equivalent instead of assuming that a completed field satisfies every framework.

A practical implementation sequence

  1. Set the reporting perimeter. Document legal entities, facilities, products, upstream and downstream activities, and the jurisdictions whose rules apply.
  2. Establish governance. Assign board and management ownership, define escalation routes and record who approves biodiversity assumptions and targets.
  3. Map locations and interfaces with nature. Prioritize sites and value-chain activities where the organization depends on ecosystems or may significantly affect them.
  4. Identify impacts and dependencies. Record drivers such as land-use change, pollution, water extraction or resource use alongside ecosystem services on which operations rely.
  5. Assess materiality. Apply the required lens: GRI impact significance, TNFD’s relevant financial and impact perspectives, or ESRS double materiality.
  6. Assess risks and opportunities. Connect material nature issues to strategy, financial planning, operational controls and resilience actions, especially for TNFD and ESRS financial materiality.
  7. Choose metrics and targets. Use the metrics required by the applicable standard and identify data owners, calculation methods, geographic boundaries and reporting periods.
  8. Map and quality-check disclosures. Use the July 2024 TNFD–GRI and TNFD–EFRAG mappings as crosswalks, then test every mapped item against the current version of the applicable standard.
  9. Explain gaps and judgments. Where data is unavailable, disclose the boundary, method, limitation and improvement plan rather than presenting an inferred number as measured performance.

Metrics, scope and evidence to plan for

Nature is location-specific, so a single corporate total can conceal material differences between sites and sourcing regions. Keep enough granularity to connect a metric to a facility, project, product, watershed, habitat or value-chain activity where the applicable framework requires that level of explanation.

  • TNFD: organize information under governance, strategy, risk and impact management, and metrics and targets. The latest recommendations snapshot, updated in October 2026, includes environmental-crime guidance and final invasive-alien-species and state-of-nature metrics.
  • GRI 101: document significant biodiversity impacts and how they are managed, using the 2024 standard rather than the replaced GRI 304: Biodiversity 2016.
  • ESRS E4: connect biodiversity and ecosystem information to the double-materiality assessment and the wider ESRS environmental package. Requirements can extend beyond a company’s own sites into relevant value-chain relationships.

Do not treat a metric appearing in one framework as automatically compliant everywhere else. Definitions, boundaries, calculation rules, narrative explanations and approval requirements can differ even when the subject appears to be the same.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Calling CSRD, ESRS and GRI the same thing

CSRD is the directive, ESRS are the reporting standards used under it, and GRI is a separate global standards system. Use the names precisely so readers can tell whether a statement is about legal scope, a reporting requirement or a voluntary impact standard.

Assuming a TNFD report replaces ESRS

TNFD is voluntary. Even though the July 2024 correspondence mapping says all 14 TNFD disclosures are reflected in ESRS, that correspondence does not turn TNFD into a legal filing or prove that every ESRS datapoint has been met.

Assuming GRI and TNFD are identical

The July 2024 interoperability mapping identifies substantial overlap, but it also identifies TNFD disclosures devoted exclusively to identifying and assessing nature-related risks and opportunities that are not reflected in GRI. Plan a separate risk-and-opportunity workstream where needed.

Using the wrong year or obsolete standard

GRI 101: Biodiversity 2024 replaced GRI 304: Biodiversity 2016. TNFD recommendations were updated in October 2026. The two interoperability mappings date from July 2024. Record the version used in every internal crosswalk and re-check for later updates before filing or publishing.

Turning a headline statistic into proof of effectiveness

GRI’s 30 July 2024 announcement referred to 14,000 reporters globally as the audience for its mapping work. That is a publisher-reported figure from 2024, not a current 2026 count and not evidence that one framework produces better biodiversity outcomes than another.

What a defensible combined approach looks like

Consider an illustrative food manufacturer with European subsidiaries, agricultural suppliers in several countries and water-intensive processing sites. Its first task is to determine whether the relevant entities are in CSRD scope. If they are, ESRS E4 and the double-materiality assessment govern the legal report.

The company could then use LEAP to locate production and sourcing interfaces with nature, use GRI 101 to document impacts on habitats and affected communities, and use TNFD’s four pillars to assign board oversight, connect water and ecosystem dependencies to strategy, manage risks and set metrics. A single evidence register can feed each report, but the compliance team would still check each ESRS requirement and preserve separate explanations where GRI or TNFD asks a different question.

This approach avoids three disconnected inventories while respecting the frameworks’ boundaries: ESRS remains the legal reporting basis, GRI makes outward impacts legible, and TNFD turns nature information into a decision-useful risk and opportunity narrative.
