TJ Hughes is preparing to open a new shop in Egremont, West Cumbria, before Christmas 2026. The store is planned for the former Original Factory Shop premises, with the latest target pointing to a mid-to-late November opening. Up to 15 people are expected to be recruited, including a store manager, while the branch is planned to sell fashion, footwear, beauty products, home appliances and pet-care goods.
When is TJ Hughes opening in Egremont?
The opening is targeted for mid to late November 2026. A report on the project says the branch should open before the end of November, while letting agent Carigiet Cowen said contractors were due to begin work after the keys were handed over and that the shop could open “by the middle or around the end of November.”

That schedule would put the launch ahead of Christmas trading, but no specific opening day has been confirmed. The timetable remains a target rather than a guaranteed date because fitting-out and other preparation work still has to be completed.
Where will the new store be?
The shop will occupy the former Original Factory Shop unit in Egremont. Carigiet Cowen said it had completed the letting to national retailer TJ Hughes, with the keys due to be handed over before contractors started work.

How many jobs will the store create?
TJ Hughes says it is recruiting up to 15 members of staff for the Egremont branch. The figure is a maximum planned headcount, so the final number of appointments could be lower depending on the store’s operating needs.

Why TJ Hughes says the opening matters
TJ Hughes chief operating officer Jason Harmer called the project “an important step” and said Egremont was a new location for the brand. He described the town as having “a great community reputation” and said the company believed moving into a site that had served the town for several years would be positive for both Egremont and TJ Hughes.
Harmer also linked the recruitment to “the broader growth of the TJ Hughes estate.” Carigiet Cowen said TJ Hughes traded from 18 stores nationwide in 2026, although the announcement does not provide a full list of those branches or a timetable for further openings.

TJ Hughes background
TJ Hughes traces its origins to Liverpool, where the company began in 1912. Its Liverpool flagship later moved from London Road to Church Street in autumn 2023. The Egremont project therefore adds a new town to a retailer with more than a century of trading history and forms part of its stated estate expansion.
What has not been confirmed yet
- An exact opening date and opening hours
- Final staff numbers and pay details
- The closing date and full terms for the manager vacancy
- Specific product brands, prices or launch promotions
- Any changes to access or parking arrangements at the premises
Until TJ Hughes publishes those details, shoppers and applicants should treat November as the current target window rather than a fixed launch date.
