First check whether TiVo is accidentally jumping or dropping playback, or whether SkipMode is intentionally skipping commercials. If it is an unintended problem with over-the-air (OTA) recordings, check the antenna signal and connections before replacing equipment; TiVo says weak or fluctuating OTA reception can contribute to skipping or recording problems.
Is TiVo skipping by mistake, or using SkipMode?
A green SKIP icon beside a recorded show means it is eligible for SkipMode; it does not indicate a playback fault. SkipMode can jump over marked commercial breaks in selected recordings after they have aired. It does not work on live TV, and local news and sports are excluded. Availability depends on the device, TiVo experience version, channel, and program. TiVo Support’s SkipMode guide describes current eligibility and compatibility.
If you want to change the setting rather than troubleshoot playback, use Settings > User Preferences > SkipMode. A Mini uses the relevant settings from its host DVR. Automatic SkipMode requires TiVo Experience 4 and is not available on Premiere or mobile devices; manual SkipMode compatibility is listed for EDGE, BOLT, Roamio, Premiere, and Mini series with Experience 3 or 4.

Pin down when the skipping happens
Before changing the signal path, note which situation matches your problem. These observations help narrow the issue but do not identify a cause by themselves.

- One recording or many: Check whether the problem is limited to a single show or affects several recordings.
- Live TV or recordings: Note whether live viewing is affected, recordings are affected, or both. SkipMode itself applies only to eligible recordings.
- OTA antenna or cable input: TiVo’s signal guidance below concerns OTA reception. It does not establish that OTA checks will resolve a problem on a cable input.
For OTA recordings, check signal strength and connections
TiVo Support gives 80–99% as a general OTA signal-strength “sweet spot,” while noting that conditions vary. It says a signal below that range or one that fluctuates may cause skipping or recording problems. This is general guidance, not a universal threshold or guarantee. - Secure the connections. Check that the DVR’s power connection and antenna coax are firmly connected. Inspect the coax for visible damage or loose fittings.
- Check the DVR’s OTA signal reading. Look for the signal-strength reading in the DVR’s signal or antenna settings. Compare it with TiVo’s general guidance, keeping in mind that local conditions can affect what works.
- Review the antenna position and signal path. Consider whether the antenna has moved or whether the coax runs through splitters, amplifiers, or other installed components. TiVo identifies antenna position, coax, splitters, weather, location, interference, construction, and transmitter power as factors that can affect reception.
- Isolate a suspect component. If you can do so safely, adjust the antenna or temporarily swap a suspect coax cable, splitter, or related component, then check whether the signal reading or playback changes. Replace a part only when checks point to it as a likely fault.
- Restart the DVR. A restart is a basic check after inspecting connections. TiVo links to a restart article, but model-specific menu steps are not included here; check TiVo’s guidance for your DVR before restarting: How to Restart or Powercycle the DVR.
When the checks do not resolve it
If the problem continues after the signal path and connections have been checked, contact TiVo Support or your signal or cable provider. The symptoms described here do not establish a hard-drive failure, a particular hardware repair, or a network fault, so avoid replacing parts based on skipping alone.
