Surviving your first horde night in 7 Days to Die is less about finding an invincible building and more about controlling where zombies can go. Build a small, layered position with one obvious approach, a repairable firing lane, enough supplies to fight continuously, and a fallback route. Prepare during daylight, repair constantly during the siege, and abandon a failing outer layer before it traps you.
What horde night is really testing
Horde night turns the normal survival loop into a concentrated defense problem. During the day, you have time to loot, mine, craft, secure shelter and improve your defenses. At night, the priority changes: enemies converge, damaged blocks and traps need attention, and a design that was adequate for ordinary wandering zombies may fail under sustained pressure.

There is no universally safe base and no reliable fixed zombie count to plan around. Horde intensity changes with progression, world settings, game version and whether you are playing alone or with others. Treat every structure as a position that buys time, not as a guarantee. A successful design gives you several chances to react.
- A controlled route keeps enemies in a predictable area.
- Outer traps and walls consume time and health before zombies reach you.
- An inner fighting position gives you room to attack and repair.
- A fallback route prevents a damaged structure from becoming a death trap.
Choose a base you can actually maintain
New players often make the mistake of building a large permanent compound immediately. The Beginners Guide’s early recommendation is the opposite: start with a small, defensible shelter that matches your available materials. A modest hut with a trench and spikes can be more useful than an impressive shell that you cannot finish or repair.

| Base choice | Best use | Strength | Weakness to manage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Temporary point of interest | Very early preparation when materials and tools are scarce | Fastest way to obtain a roof and an existing layout | Unknown weaknesses, limited upgrade room and potentially several zombie approaches |
| Compact spike-and-trench base | First horde nights and low-resource worlds | Cheap delay layer with a simple, visible engagement area | Requires regular repairs and can collapse if the player has no inner position |
| Dedicated horde base | Later nights after you can invest in stronger blocks and traps | Purpose-built path control, repair access and expansion space | Higher construction and maintenance cost; a complicated design can create its own failure points |
When comparing locations, ask five practical questions: Can you build and repair it with current materials? Does it give zombies one predictable approach? Can you reach damaged blocks without exposing yourself? Is there an inner layer or escape route? Can the design accept stronger blocks, additional traps, power or turrets later?
Build the approach before decorating the base
The safest early layout is a funnel: a broad area that narrows toward one controlled mouth or lane. The official Defense Tactics guidance describes trap-filled hallways that force approaching zombies toward a controlled opening. This arrangement lets you aim at a predictable zone, use melee attacks when enemies are close, and replace damaged components without defending every side of the building.

1. Remove competing routes
Inspect the terrain around the structure. Fill or block gaps that offer zombies a direct shortcut to a side or rear wall. You do not need to make every surface identical; you do need to avoid several equally attractive routes. If one approach is clearly easier, enemies are more likely to spend their time where your traps and weapons are ready.
2. Make the lane serviceable
Leave enough width to swing a melee weapon, aim a ranged weapon and reach a damaged trap or block. A lane that is too narrow can stop you from repairing or create a pileup at your own entrance. A lane that is too wide allows enemies to spread out and attack multiple surfaces at once. Build for access, not just appearance.

3. Put your fighting position behind the delay layer
Your firing or melee point should be protected from the first contact with the horde but close enough that you can hit enemies before they reach the inner wall. Include a solid surface you can repair from your side. Hatches, poles or similar openings can let you attack through a controlled gap while preserving a barrier between you and the crowd.
Layer defenses so one breach is not the end
The official zombie guidance recommends layered defenses because no base is perfectly safe during a siege. Think of each layer as a separate job rather than stacking identical walls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOuter delay layer
Use affordable obstacles such as wood spikes, a shallow pit, a trench or other early-game traps to slow and damage the first wave. These items are valuable because they buy seconds for shooting, repositioning and repairs. Place them where you can inspect and replace them without walking into the main enemy flow.
Controlled barrier
Behind the first traps, add a wall, hatch line or other barrier that narrows the attack. This is the point where you decide how zombies present themselves to you. A controlled mouth is easier to defend than a perimeter with multiple doors and windows.

Inner position
Keep a second wall or protected fighting point behind the outer barrier. If the first line is damaged, move inward instead of standing beside a collapsing block. The inner position should still allow attacks and repairs; a sealed box only delays the moment when you run out of options.
Fallback route
Reserve an exit that does not pass directly through the main approach. It can lead to a nearby roof, a separate platform or open ground from which you can circle back. Keep it usable: do not fill it with storage, leave it permanently blocked, or depend on a ladder you cannot reach while under attack.
Prepare during daylight
Daytime is your preparation window. The game’s official description emphasizes looting, mining, crafting and strengthening defenses while daylight slows and weakens zombies. Use that time to complete the base and to remove the reasons you might have to leave it during the horde.
- Secure shelter first. Choose the location, clear immediate threats and establish a place where you can store supplies without obstructing the fighting route.
- Collect building materials. Gather enough for the outer layer, inner barrier, repairs and an emergency patch. The amount depends on your world settings and how much damage the structure takes, so do not treat one material count as universal.
- Craft or find a dependable primary weapon. Carry a basic weapon even if you expect traps to do most of the work. A weapon gives you a way to finish damaged enemies and respond when the lane behaves differently than expected.
- Prepare a backup weapon or alternate attack. Your primary weapon may break, run out of ammunition or become awkward at close range. A second option keeps a single failure from ending the defense.
- Make ammunition or stock consumables. Bring the ammunition your weapon uses, plus healing items and any other consumables you can reliably replace. Exact quantities are player- and settings-dependent.
- Craft repair supplies. Put building blocks and repair materials in an accessible inventory slot. You should be able to repair without searching containers while enemies are at the wall.
- Finish the route and test it. Walk from the expected approach to the fighting position, then take the fallback route. If you cannot reach a repair point or exit quickly in daylight, the arrangement is unlikely to improve under pressure.
An example early progression
The official Defense Tactics page gives one illustrative target: obtain a forge and steel tools by about day 4, then aim for a crossbow by about day 7, assuming you can keep equipment repaired. This is an example rather than a universal requirement. Loot tables, settings, multiplayer roles and game version can change what is available on those days.

- Improve - Increase your skills in a multitude of active and passive disciplines. 7 to Die is the only true survival RPG with nearly 50 multi-tiered skill and perk groups.
Use the example as a planning rhythm, not a deadline. If your world does not provide the same tools, compensate with a simpler route, more delay traps, a reliable backup weapon and a stronger fallback plan. A functional base with ordinary equipment is preferable to an unfinished design waiting for a specific item.
What to carry into the fight
Organize your inventory so the items needed in the first minute are immediately available. The objective is continuity: you should be able to attack, heal, repair and reposition without opening storage or abandoning the fighting point.
- Primary weapon and its ammunition or consumable resource.
- Backup weapon suited to a different range or engagement.
- Healing items and any food or water needed for the session.
- Building blocks for emergency patches.
- Repair materials for the weapon, traps and structural pieces.
- A tool or access item needed to reach your repair points.
- Enough free inventory space to pick up replacement items or avoid being encumbered.
Do not rely on a single weapon type. A ranged weapon may be efficient while the lane is clear, but a close-range option can save you when enemies reach the barrier. Conversely, melee-only plans can become dangerous if several zombies occupy the same opening.

Watch the outer layer continuously
Repairs and trap replacement are normal siege duties, not signs that the design failed. Watch for the first spike, wall or opening taking sustained damage. Repair before the block reaches a critical state when possible, and replace disposable traps as soon as the lane gives you a safe moment.

Prioritize threats that multiply pressure
Kill screamer zombies quickly when they appear. The official tactics guidance warns that they can create more enemies, turning a manageable approach into a larger crowd. Do not let a target that can escalate the fight remain unattended while you focus only on the nearest body.
Keep the mouth open and predictable
If debris, corpses or a damaged block changes the route, the horde may begin attacking a different side. Re-establish the intended lane with repairs or emergency blocks when it is safe. Avoid opening several new gaps while trying to fix one problem.

When the outer layer is failing, retreat to the inner position or fallback route while you still have room to move. Waiting until the barrier is gone can leave you surrounded or force you to jump into an uncontrolled area. Your base is doing its job if it gives you time to make that decision.
Common mistakes and their fixes
| Mistake | Why it fails | Better response |
|---|---|---|
| Building a huge main base for the first horde | Materials and repair time are spread across too many surfaces | Use a compact position and expand only after you can maintain it |
| Leaving several direct entrances | Zombies divide their pressure and reach weak walls | Block unnecessary routes and make one approach the easiest path |
| Relying on traps without a fighting position | Traps eventually wear down and provide no answer to a breach | Add a repairable inner barrier and a weapon position behind it |
| Standing outside to repair a distant trap | You trade structural maintenance for direct exposure | Place traps within a serviceable lane or retreat to repair from cover |
| Waiting for total collapse before retreating | The exit may be blocked by enemies or rubble | Use the inner layer as soon as the outer position becomes unreliable |
| Assuming a design is universally safe | Progression and settings alter pressure and available resources | Test the layout, keep mobility and adapt after each event |
After the horde: repair before you upgrade
When the event ends, inspect the approach in daylight. Replace destroyed spikes, repair damaged walls, clear obstructions and verify that the fallback route still works. Note where zombies stopped, where they redirected and which component required the most attention. That information is more useful than copying a design that was built for different settings.
Upgrade in an order that reduces risk: first restore the controlled route and repair access, then strengthen the inner position, then add more traps or advanced equipment. A larger footprint is worthwhile only when you can defend and maintain every new surface.
A practical pre-horde checklist
- Small, repairable base selected.
- One obvious approach established and competing routes blocked.
- Fallback exit tested from the fighting position.
- Outer spikes, trench or other affordable delay layer installed.
- Second wall or inner fighting position ready.
- Primary and backup weapons functional.
- Ammunition, healing items, building blocks and repair materials packed.
- Repairs completed before the horde begins.
- Screamer response planned.
- Inventory arranged so critical items are immediately reachable.
The rule that keeps early bases alive
Build for time and decisions, not permanence. A compact funnel with layered defenses, accessible repair points and a usable escape route gives you opportunities to shoot, melee, repair and retreat. As your tools and materials improve, strengthen that same logic rather than assuming a larger building will solve the problem. The official guidance is clear on the underlying principle: layered defenses help when a zombie horde arrives, but a base is never perfectly safe.
