Short answer: Tiny11 is a modified Windows 11 image, not a separate Microsoft edition. Its regular build removes many bundled applications while retaining enough components for ongoing servicing. The more aggressive Tiny11 Core build also removes WinSxS, Windows Update and Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), making it a testing or development image rather than a normal daily-driver installation. A standard Windows 11 installation keeps Microsoft’s full component set, recovery tools and supported servicing model.

Tiny11 can reduce clutter and setup work on a carefully chosen machine, but it does not make unsupported hardware officially eligible for Windows 11, and there is no controlled evidence here that it guarantees lower RAM use, faster booting or a specific disk-space saving. The meaningful trade-off is between a leaner application set and the ability to repair, update and extend the operating system.

What Tiny11 actually is

Tiny11 is produced with NTDEV’s Tiny11 Builder scripts. You start with a Windows 11 ISO, run a builder in an elevated PowerShell session, choose a Windows edition (SKU), and receive a customized tiny11.iso. The builder removes selected applications and, depending on the script, deeper Windows components.

That distinction matters. Tiny11 is not a Microsoft Windows edition, license, or certification. It is a modified image assembled from Windows installation media. Your license, activation status, hardware eligibility and update rights still depend on the underlying Windows terms and Microsoft’s policies.

NTDEV describes the regular script as “The regular script, which removes a lot of bloat but keeps the system serviceable.” The word serviceable is the key boundary: regular Tiny11 is designed to keep enough of Windows’ servicing stack for later updates, languages and features, while Tiny11 Core deliberately gives up those capabilities.

Standard Windows 11: the baseline you are comparing against

A standard installation contains Microsoft’s normal Windows 11 component set for the edition you select. That includes the inbox applications, Windows component store, Windows Update, Windows Recovery Environment, security features and optional-feature infrastructure that Microsoft expects when it services the operating system.

Microsoft’s current minimum requirements are:

  • Processor: a compatible 64-bit CPU or system on a chip running at 1 GHz or faster with at least two cores.
  • Memory: 4 GB or greater.
  • Storage: 64 GB or greater. Microsoft notes that updates and particular features can require more over time.
  • Graphics: DirectX 12 or later with a WDDM 2.0 driver.
  • Firmware: UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable.
  • Security: TPM version 2.0.
  • Display: at least 720p, at least 9 inches measured diagonally, and 8 bits per color channel.
  • Connectivity and account: internet access is needed for updates and some features; Windows 11 Home requires internet and a Microsoft account to complete first-use setup.

These are operating-system requirements, not a benchmark of either Tiny11 or standard Windows. Removing applications does not prove that a computer below these thresholds becomes supported.

Three images, three different trade-offs

Area Standard Windows 11 Tiny11 regular Tiny11 Core
Origin Microsoft installation media installed without Tiny11 Builder modifications. Windows 11 ISO processed with tiny11maker.ps1. Windows 11 ISO processed with tiny11coremaker.ps1.
Bundled apps Microsoft’s normal inbox apps for the selected edition. Many bundled apps removed; the exact list can change with script releases. Everything removed by regular Tiny11, plus deeper system components.
Servicing Normal Windows Update and optional-feature model. Maintainer says languages, updates and features can be added after creation. Cannot add languages, updates or features after creation.
Component store Present. Retained so the image remains serviceable. WinSxS is removed; NTDEV warns Windows Update would not work without it.
Windows Update Present, subject to Microsoft’s normal policies and hardware support. Retained in the serviceable design. Removed.
Recovery WinRE and standard recovery options are available. Intended to remain serviceable; verify recovery options after installation. WinRE is removed.
Defender Included according to the selected Windows edition and configuration. Not listed as removed by the regular script. Disabled by the Core script; NTDEV says it can be enabled again.
Recommended use General-purpose computers, managed systems and supported upgrades. Users who accept a modified image and want fewer bundled apps. Quick testing or development, where disposable media and manual recovery are acceptable.

What the regular Tiny11 script removes

NTDEV’s current README lists these removals for the regular builder:

  • Clipchamp
  • News and Weather
  • Xbox
  • GetHelp and GetStarted
  • Office Hub
  • Solitaire
  • People
  • Power Automate
  • To Do
  • Alarms
  • Mail and Calendar
  • Feedback Hub
  • Maps
  • Sound Recorder
  • Your Phone
  • Media Player
  • Quick Assist
  • Internet Explorer
  • Tablet PC Math
  • Edge
  • OneDrive

The list belongs to the current README and can change when the scripts change. Removing an inbox app is not the same as removing every dependency that app used. NTDEV notes that Edge remnants can still appear in Settings even though the application itself has been deleted. Outlook or Dev Home may reappear later, so a stripped image is not necessarily permanently free of every Microsoft app.

The Microsoft Store may also need a Winget update before it can install applications. That is a practical issue for anyone expecting to reconstruct the standard app set after installation. Test the Store, Winget and the specific applications you need before deploying the image to other machines.

Why Tiny11 Core is a fundamentally different choice

Core removes the regular list and then removes the Windows Component Store (WinSxS), Windows Update and WinRE. It also disables Windows Defender, although NTDEV says Defender can be enabled again. WinSxS stores component versions and the payloads Windows uses for servicing and optional features. Without it, NTDEV warns that Windows Update would not work.

Because Core removes those foundations, its inability to add languages, updates or features is not a minor inconvenience. It changes the lifecycle of the installation. You cannot treat Core as regular Tiny11 with a few more apps deleted; it is a deliberately non-serviceable image. Use it for a short-lived test environment or development scenario where you can recreate the image, not for a computer that must receive routine security updates.

Hardware eligibility does not change

Tiny11’s smaller application set does not waive Microsoft’s hardware checks. A computer with an unsupported processor, missing TPM 2.0, legacy firmware or insufficient storage remains outside Microsoft’s stated Windows 11 requirements even if Tiny11 installs successfully.

Microsoft’s unsupported-device notice says: “Installing Windows 11 on this PC is not recommended and may result in compatibility issues.” Microsoft also states that such devices are unsupported and are not guaranteed to receive updates, including security updates, and recommends rolling back when an unsupported installation has problems. This warning addresses the hardware eligibility of the Windows installation; it is not a Tiny11-specific certification or benchmark.

Before choosing Tiny11, check the machine’s CPU compatibility, UEFI/Secure Boot capability, TPM 2.0 status, memory and storage. If the machine meets the requirements, regular Tiny11 still remains a modified image with its own maintenance risks. If it does not, Tiny11 may be a technical experiment, but it is not a way to turn the device into an officially supported Windows 11 PC.

Performance: what is known and what is not

Removing apps can reduce the number of preinstalled packages and background opportunities, but the available primary material does not provide a controlled Tiny11-versus-standard benchmark. There is no supported figure here for RAM saved, boot time, CPU usage, battery life or disk-space reduction.

Performance depends on the Windows build, drivers, startup applications, storage device, security configuration and workload. A clean standard installation with unwanted startup items disabled may behave differently from an older Tiny11 image with incompatible drivers. Treat claims of guaranteed speed or memory gains as unverified unless they include matched hardware, identical Windows versions, repeatable measurements and a clearly described workload.

How to build regular Tiny11 safely

Use the current Tiny11 Builder README and Microsoft’s official Windows download source for the exact files and commands. Do not rely on a prebuilt ISO from an unknown host; you cannot verify what else was changed, added or removed.

  1. Back up the computer. Copy documents, browser data, application installers, encryption recovery keys and any other irreplaceable files to an external backup device or another trusted location. A clean installation can erase the existing Windows installation, applications and personal files.
  2. Obtain a Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft. Select the edition and language you are licensed to use. Keep the ISO unchanged; the builder works from this source image.
  3. Mount the ISO. In File Explorer, right-click the ISO and choose the mount option so Windows exposes its contents as a virtual DVD drive.
  4. Prepare PowerShell. Open Windows PowerShell 5.1 as Administrator. The project instructions include a process-level execution-policy change so the script can run; apply the documented command for the current release rather than copying an old command from a forum.
  5. Run the regular builder. Launch tiny11maker.ps1 from the project folder, choose the Windows edition/SKU when prompted, and let the script complete. The output is tiny11.iso.
  6. Inspect before installing. Keep a copy of the source ISO and record the selected edition. If the script reports an error, stop and resolve it rather than booting an incomplete image. Verify that the applications and features you require are available in a test installation.
  7. Create installation media. Microsoft documents a USB flash drive as installation media. Write the resulting ISO to a suitable USB drive with a trusted installation-media tool, then safely eject it.
  8. Install on the target computer. Boot from the USB, select the target disk and follow Windows Setup. Confirm the disk choice carefully: deleting or formatting partitions removes the existing operating system, installed applications and files.
  9. Update and test. After the first boot, test activation, networking, audio, graphics, Bluetooth, printers, the Microsoft Store, Winget and any business-critical software. Install available updates and language packs on regular Tiny11 while servicing is still available.

Installation risks and recovery planning

Microsoft warns that booting installation media for a fresh copy can wipe the drive’s contents, Windows installation and installed apps. A USB installer is convenient, but it is not a backup. Keep the external backup disconnected during installation when practical so an accidental disk selection cannot destroy both copies.

Regular Tiny11 is the only Tiny11 variant in this comparison intended to remain serviceable. Core lacks WinRE, so a failed boot, corrupted system file or bad driver may require reinstalling from external media rather than using the familiar Windows recovery menus.

Choosing between the three options

Choose standard Windows 11 when support and recovery come first

Use the standard image for a primary work computer, a family PC, a managed fleet, accessibility-dependent setup or any machine that must receive normal updates and optional features. It has the fewest surprises for help-desk procedures, vendor support and future in-place repairs.

Choose regular Tiny11 when you accept modification for a leaner app set

Regular Tiny11 is the middle ground. It removes many bundled apps while retaining the component infrastructure needed for languages, updates and features. You still need to maintain a custom image, test every release and accept that removed applications or dependencies may be difficult to restore. It is most defensible on a non-critical machine after you have verified your workload.

Choose Tiny11 Core only for disposable or controlled environments

Core is appropriate when rapid provisioning of a minimal test or development environment matters more than Windows servicing and recovery. Keep it isolated, document that Windows Update and WinRE are absent, and plan to rebuild rather than repair when the environment drifts or breaks. It is a poor fit for a long-lived internet-facing workstation.

Common problems and practical responses

An app you need is missing

Check whether it is in the regular removal list. If the app is essential, use a standard Windows installation or test whether an official installer can restore it without unsupported dependencies. Do not assume the Microsoft Store will immediately repair every removed component; NTDEV notes that Winget may need updating first.

Edge still appears in Settings

This is a documented remnant of the regular script. The presence of an entry does not necessarily mean the full browser package remains installed. Treat the Settings listing as a cosmetic or registration artifact and verify the actual application state before attempting manual registry edits.

Outlook or Dev Home returns

NTDEV notes that these applications may reappear later. Windows servicing or a Microsoft app mechanism can restore packages that were not permanently blocked. If a clean app inventory is a requirement, monitor the image after updates rather than assuming the first boot is the final state.

Windows Update fails on Core

That behavior is inherent to the design: Core removes Windows Update and WinSxS. It is not a normal troubleshooting problem with a supported repair. Recreate the environment with regular Tiny11 or standard Windows if updates are required.

A feature or language cannot be added

Core cannot add languages, updates or features after creation. Rebuild with the required language and features included in the source workflow, or choose regular Tiny11, which the maintainer documents as extensible after creation.

The Store will not install an app

On regular Tiny11, update Winget as described in the current project instructions, then retry the Store operation. If the Store or its dependencies were removed or remain inconsistent, a standard Windows image may be the faster and more reliable remedy.

Upgrades and version changes

Do not assume that a Tiny11 image upgrades like an unmodified Windows installation. The community wording “Upgrade from Tiny11 24H2 to 25H2?” describes a real user concern, but it does not establish that such an upgrade works. Because Tiny11 scripts remove components and the README can change, test any version transition on a spare machine or virtual machine first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Regular Tiny11’s retained servicing components give it a better chance of accepting normal maintenance than Core, but that is not a guarantee of every feature update. Core’s removal of Windows Update and WinSxS means you should plan a clean rebuild for a new release instead of depending on an in-place upgrade.

Security and maintenance implications

A smaller image is not automatically a safer image. Removing Help, recovery tools or security-related dependencies can make troubleshooting harder. Regular Tiny11 should still be patched through its available servicing path, and you should verify that Defender or another security product is active. Core disables Windows Defender by design, so enabling it again or supplying an independently managed security stack is your responsibility; the project does not turn Core into a supported Microsoft security configuration.

Keep a written inventory of the script release, source ISO build, selected SKU, removed components and installed drivers. Repeat that inventory after major updates. When a problem appears, you can distinguish a driver or application fault from a component that the custom image intentionally removed.

Bottom line

For most people, standard Windows 11 is the safer default because it preserves Microsoft’s complete servicing and recovery model. Regular Tiny11 is a calculated compromise: fewer bundled apps and a more curated starting point, in exchange for a modified image that you must test and maintain. Tiny11 Core is a specialist tool for short-lived testing or development, not a replacement for a supported everyday installation. None of the variants changes Microsoft’s hardware requirements, and no documented benchmark proves a guaranteed speed, RAM or storage advantage.
