Tiny gold nanogaps may make molecular handedness easier to detect by combining two effects: molecules interact with concentrated optical fields inside accessible gaps, and a larger, ordered structure turns that local interaction into a narrow collective optical signal. A 2026 study reports this approach in gold nanocube cluster lattices, but it is a promising research design—not a proven general-purpose test.
Why molecular chirality is difficult to read optically
Chirality is a form of handedness: a chiral molecule and its mirror-image counterpart have different three-dimensional arrangements, much like left and right hands. Those forms can interact differently with chiral light or with a chiral optical field. The challenge is producing a signal that distinguishes that difference clearly enough from the many other factors that affect an optical measurement.
Circular dichroism (CD) measures a difference in how a sample absorbs left- versus right-circularly polarized light. A molecule’s chiral response can be weak, so researchers are exploring structures that concentrate light where molecules can interact with it and amplify the resulting readout.

In a 2026 Materials Letters study, Haeil Kim and colleagues describe periodically arranged gold nanocube clusters. Their design links optical behavior at two scales: nanocube clusters create accessible gaps, while the periodic lattice couples cluster plasmons with light diffracted by the lattice. The coupling forms a narrow surface lattice resonance, a collective optical mode that can serve as a readout. Read the study’s publisher page.

- Molecules interact at the gaps. A nanogap can concentrate an electromagnetic field into a very small volume. That concentration is useful for sensing only if the target molecules can reach or interact with the hotspot.
- The lattice creates a collective mode. In the reported architecture, cluster plasmons interact with lattice diffraction to produce a narrow surface lattice resonance, rather than relying only on a local response from an individual gap.
- The chiral interaction changes the optical readout. The authors report that chiral molecules incorporated during lattice formation selectively produce a CD response at the collective mode, with minimal change in extinction. Their simulations associate the selectivity with optical helicity localized in nanogaps and dissipation mediated across the cluster volume.
In other words, the concept is to pair a molecule-accessible interaction site with a structure-wide resonance that reads out its effect. The abstract reports a selective CD response, but does not give a numerical detection limit or sensitivity figure for this platform.
Why access to the hotspot matters
A separate 2026 study of helicoid gold nanoparticles illustrates the same design concern in a different structure: strong structural chirality alone does not guarantee that analytes reach the regions with the strongest near-fields. The researchers used a roughly 1.5-nanometre polystyrene-thiol coating to tune the local refractive-index environment while preserving an open nanogap. They report up to 66% higher sensing sensitivity for modified M-H3 particles than for bare H3 particles in colloidal suspension. This result belongs to the helicoid system; it is not a performance result for nanocube cluster lattices. Read the ACS Nano study.

The practical lesson across these two distinct platforms is that hotspot strength is not enough on its own. A useful design must also let the target reach the hotspot and produce a readout that separates handedness from unrelated changes in concentration, composition, or optical conditions. The available NCCL abstract supports the accessibility and collective-readout concepts, but does not provide enough protocol or numerical data for a quantitative comparison with the helicoid platform.

What the reported results establish—and what they do not
The NCCL result is evidence for a research design principle: accessible nanogap interactions may be coupled to a narrow collective resonance to transduce molecular chirality into a CD signal. The authors report minimal change in extinction alongside the selective CD response, and their simulations offer a proposed explanation for that selectivity. The available abstract does not establish a detection limit, analyte range, uncertainty estimate, or a numerical sensitivity value for NCCLs.

A third, separate 2026 example provides broader context for plasmonic chiroptics. In a study of mechanically stretched proteins anchored within achiral gold nanoparticle assemblies, the authors report reversible modulation of plasmon-coupled CD, an ellipticity of 1.18°, a dissymmetry factor of 0.2, and switching over more than 100 cycles. Those measurements concern protein–particle assemblies, not molecular sensing with NCCLs. Read the Nature Materials study.
These are laboratory research results. The studies do not establish that a commercially available or clinically validated chirality test exists. For a practical sensing claim, readers would need information such as analyte-specific detection limits, controls distinguishing opposite enantiomers from achiral or concentration effects, reproducibility, and independent validation. Those details are not established by the NCCL abstract available here.

How to judge future nanogap chirality claims
- Can the analyte enter the hotspot? A high-field gap is not useful for a target that cannot access it.
- Does the signal distinguish handedness? Look for controls with opposite enantiomers and achiral samples, not just a change in optical intensity.
- What produces the readout? Separate a local gap response from a collective resonance, and check whether the reported resonance linewidth and measurement method support the claimed distinction.
- What was measured quantitatively? Look for sensitivity, detection limit, tested analytes, uncertainty, and concentration controls. Do not transfer performance figures from a different nanostructure or assay.
