The Xteink X3 makes a tiny eReader practical for short reading sessions and easy carry—but its 3.7-inch screen, lack of a front light, and limited controls make it a poor fit for every reader. The headline’s “3-inch” is a rounded description; the manufacturer specifies a 3.7-inch display.

What the Xteink X3 is—and what makes it different

The X3 is a compact eReader built around portability rather than a roomy page. Xteink lists it at 58 g and 5.1 mm thick, with a 259 PPI display, 16 GB of storage expandable by microSD up to 256 GB, and a 650 mAh battery. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. Xteink’s X3 product page also lists physical page-turn buttons, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and file transfer through an app or microSD card.

The basic trade-off is simple: it is easier to keep close at hand than a conventional eReader, but a much smaller screen gives each page less space. Its appeal is strongest when you want to read in brief idle moments, not when you want the most spacious or flexible reading setup.

Can you read full-length books on a 3.7-inch screen?

Yes, but “can” is different from “will enjoy.” A full-length book can be read page by page on the X3, though the small display means less text fits at once and more page turns may be needed than on a larger reader. Font size, layout, eyesight, and personal preference all affect whether a particular session feels comfortable. Try your usual reading format and a representative passage before deciding that the compact screen suits you.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Saahil Desai, a senior editor at The Atlantic, described using the X3 for several weeks. He wrote that he spent ten hours paging through Robert Caro’s The Power Broker, finished three books in one month after finishing one in the previous two months, and found the text easy to read. He also said three hours of reading did not strain his eyes. These are Desai’s personal experiences, not a controlled test or a guarantee that the same screen will feel comfortable to someone else. His September 6, 2026, account captures the central appeal: “The X3 is great because of its size, not in spite of it.”

What you give up with the smaller reader

No built-in front light

Xteink’s detailed specifications say the X3 has no front light. You will need ambient light to read, so it is not a self-contained choice for a dark bedroom, dim commute, or other low-light setting. An external reading light may be an option, but check that a light is compatible and practical with the X3’s small dimensions before buying one.

No touchscreen

The X3 uses physical page-turn buttons and does not have a touchscreen. That suits readers who prefer tactile page controls, but it rules out touch-based navigation on the device. The buttons are a defining part of the experience rather than a smaller version of a standard touchscreen eReader.

Small pages and a basic reading experience

Desai found the device’s preloaded software flawed and finicky, reporting problems with book covers and some text formatting. He also described the reader as plasticky. Those observations come from his use of the device and should not be treated as a universal assessment of every firmware version. They are useful reminders that a compact screen is only one part of the experience: software presentation and handling matter too.

Will your books transfer and open?

Xteink’s detailed specification list names EPUB and TXT documents, plus JPG and BMP images. The product page describes app transfer and microSD card transfer. It does not establish seamless access to every bookstore or library catalog, so check that your existing files and transfer routine work with the X3 before relying on it as your main reader.

Desai reported that transferring Amazon books was not a one-click process in his workflow. That is a report about his experience, not proof that every possible transfer method or current firmware behaves the same way. If most of your reading comes from a particular store or library, confirm its format and transfer requirements rather than assuming the X3 works like a device tied directly to that service.

There is also a specification discrepancy to keep in mind: the detailed X3 list is narrower than a comparison table on the manufacturer’s page, which lists more formats for the X3 and X4 Pro. Firmware and version details may matter. Verify support for the files you intend to use instead of treating the broader comparison-table list as a guarantee for your particular device.

How to decide whether the X3 suits your reading

  • Choose the X3 if: you value very low weight, want to keep a reader close for short breaks, prefer physical page-turn buttons, and can read with available room light.
  • Consider the X4 Pro if: you want a larger display, a front light, or touchscreen input and accept a little more weight.
  • Look beyond both if: you need a roomy page for long sessions, rely on dark-room reading, or need a verified, direct workflow for a specific store or library.

Before choosing, check six things against your actual routine: whether you will carry it everywhere, whether you need a front light, which controls you prefer, how your books transfer, whether your formats are supported by the relevant firmware, and whether the screen feels comfortable for your typical book and session length.

Price, stock, and accessories

Prices and inventory change. Xteink’s product page displayed $69 and “Sold out” for the selected US configuration when accessed October 7, 2026; that is a dated listing, not a current availability promise. The Atlantic reported a $69 Amazon price in its September 6, 2026 article, also a historical figure. Check the listing for your region before making a purchase.
