The individual bat described as rescued and released in Pennsylvania cannot be identified reliably from the public information available. Its size is biologically plausible for Pennsylvania’s eastern small-footed bat, whose body is little more than 3½ inches long including its tail, but the state also has the endangered Indiana bat and seven other native species. The rescue illustrates how licensed rehabilitators return recoverable bats to the wild while protecting people and legally protected wildlife.

Which tiny bat could it have been?

Pennsylvania has nine native bat species. Without an incident-specific account naming the animal, finder, dates and location, assigning the rescued bat to one species would be speculation. The eastern small-footed bat is the clearest biological match for the word “tiny”: the Pennsylvania Game Commission describes an animal little more than 3½ inches long, including a 1½-inch tail, with feet less than half an inch long.

Small size does not by itself establish a conservation category. Pennsylvania’s current profiles classify the eastern small-footed bat as threatened and protected under the state Game and Wildlife Code. The Indiana bat is classified as endangered and protected. “Critically endangered” is not the classification supplied for either species in those Pennsylvania profiles.

Species What Pennsylvania’s profile says Relevant pressure
Eastern small-footed bat (Myotis leibii) Threatened; protected under the state Game and Wildlife Code; little more than 3½ inches long including the tail Habitat loss and disease pressures affecting cave bats
Indiana bat (Myotis sodalis) Endangered; protected under the state Game and Wildlife Code White-nose syndrome is identified as an emerging threat

Why Pennsylvania bat rescues matter

White-nose syndrome has caused declines greater than 90% in several Pennsylvania cave-bat species, including Indiana, northern long-eared and little brown bats, according to the Pennsylvania Wildlife Action Plan’s species summary. Habitat loss adds pressure by reducing suitable roosts, maternity sites and hibernation areas.

That context makes an individual rescue significant, but it does not mean every grounded bat is a member of an endangered species. Correct identification requires trained handling and, in some cases, specialist examination. A bat’s size, color or location alone is not enough.

What licensed rehabilitation involves

Pennsylvania Bat Rescue and Rehabilitation says it provides professional care for injured, orphaned and distressed native bats and works to reintroduce releasable animals. Its guidance emphasizes individualized treatment: some injuries heal in weeks, while others require months before a bat can fly, feed and function normally.

Release is therefore an outcome of recovery, not an automatic step. A bat that cannot safely survive in the wild may instead become an education animal. WHYY reported that the featured rehabilitation center released more than 200 bats in the prior year; that figure describes the center’s reported work, not a statewide total.

What to do if you find a bat on the ground

  1. Keep people and pets away. Close interior doors, contain pets and avoid cornering the bat.
  2. Do not touch it with bare hands. Bats can bite defensively, and handling protected wildlife may also violate state rules.
  3. Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or the relevant Pennsylvania authority. Describe where the bat was found, whether it was indoors or outdoors, and any visible injury.
  4. Follow current public-health advice if contact may have occurred. Pennsylvania Department of Health guidance can change, so verify the current exposure protocol rather than relying on an old checklist. If a person or pet had possible contact, report that fact promptly to the appropriate health or veterinary authority.
  5. Do not attempt feeding, wing treatment or release on your own. Incorrect food, temperatures or handling can worsen an injury and may interfere with a professional assessment.

A grounded bat may be injured, exhausted, displaced or ill. The safest next step is professional triage, not a judgment based on appearance.

Can a rescued bat be released?

Yes, when a licensed rehabilitator determines that the bat has recovered sufficiently to survive. That assessment can include healing, flight ability, feeding behavior and the suitability of the release setting. The timetable is individual; Pennsylvania Bat Rescue and Rehabilitation notes that some cases take weeks or months.

Release also has legal and ecological constraints. Protected species should be handled only by authorized professionals, and the release site should be appropriate for the species and season. If recovery is not possible, an education placement can prevent additional handling while allowing the animal to support public awareness.

How to help Pennsylvania bats beyond one rescue

Protect roost and maternity habitat

Long-term habitat protection addresses a different problem from an emergency rescue. Avoid disturbing known roosts and hibernation sites, and preserve mature trees and other structures that bats use for shelter.

Consider a properly selected bat box

Penn Today reported on October 22, 2024, that Penn Vet’s Wildlife Futures Program, Penn Sustainability and Penn Facilities developed wooden bat boxes designed to mimic tree habitat, with maternity spaces planned for spring 2025. A bat box can provide supplemental habitat, but it is not a substitute for rehabilitation or veterinary care.

Licensed rehabilitators supply expertise that households cannot safely replicate: species identification, disease precautions, treatment and release decisions. Supporting qualified Pennsylvania wildlife organizations, volunteering where permitted and reporting unusual bat mortality can complement habitat work.
