Tim Cook’s tenure as Apple CEO ended on September 1, 2026, when John Ternus became CEO and Cook became executive chairman. Apple says that during Cook’s leadership its market capitalization rose from approximately $350 billion to $4 trillion, while annual revenue grew from $108 billion in fiscal 2011 to more than $416 billion in fiscal 2025. Those figures show the scale of Apple’s growth during his tenure; they do not prove how much of it Cook personally caused.

When Tim Cook led Apple as CEO

Apple named Cook CEO in August 2011, after he had served as the company’s chief operating officer. As COO, he was responsible for worldwide sales and operations, including Apple’s supply chain, sales activities, and service and support across markets. That operational background is relevant context for his leadership, but it is not by itself an explanation for Apple’s subsequent growth. Apple’s leadership profile describes his roles.

Cook’s CEO tenure concluded on September 1, 2026. Apple announced that John Ternus would take over as CEO and Cook would become executive chairman. The same announcement provides Apple’s comparison of its financial and market-value scale across Cook’s tenure. Apple’s April 2026 succession announcement

How much did Apple grow during Cook’s tenure?

Apple’s April 2026 announcement says its market capitalization increased from approximately $350 billion to $4 trillion under Cook’s leadership. It also reports yearly revenue rising from $108 billion in fiscal 2011 to more than $416 billion in fiscal 2025. These are company-reported comparisons with stated endpoints, not a measure of Cook’s individual causal contribution.

What the market-value and shareholder-return figures mean

Market capitalization is the market value of a company’s outstanding shares at a given time. Because share prices change, market capitalization is a moving measure rather than a total of money Apple earned. Revenue measures sales over a period; shareholder return measures the investment performance of shares over a period. These measures answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Apple’s 2025 proxy statement reports that market capitalization grew by more than $3 trillion from Cook’s 2011 promotion through the end of 2024. For that same period, it reports cumulative total shareholder return of approximately 1,908%. The proxy’s end-2024 figures use a different cutoff from the April 2026 announcement’s comparison ending with fiscal 2025 revenue and a later market-capitalization figure. Keep the periods separate rather than combining them into one calculation. Apple’s 2025 proxy statement

What these numbers do—and do not—show

  • They show scale. Apple reports substantial growth in revenue and market capitalization during Cook’s leadership.
  • They describe different outcomes. Revenue is a fiscal-year sales measure; market capitalization is a market value at a point in time; total shareholder return is an investment-performance measure over a defined period.
  • They do not isolate personal causation. The cited figures do not establish what Apple’s results would have been under another CEO or how much growth was attributable to Cook alone.

A fair account can therefore say that Apple grew by trillions in market value during Cook’s tenure, while avoiding the stronger and unsupported claim that he alone caused the increase.
