If TikTok is stuttering, freezing, or slow to respond on Android or iPhone, start by updating the app, then check whether the slowdown follows TikTok or your connection. Work through the nine checks below in order; each helps narrow down a different possible cause, but none guarantees a speed improvement on every phone.
1. Update TikTok
TikTok’s first-steps troubleshooting guidance says to make sure you have the latest app version before following its troubleshooting steps. Open your device’s official app store, find TikTok, and install an update if one is offered. Then reopen the app and see whether scrolling and playback improve.
2. Check whether the slowdown is limited to TikTok
Open a few other apps or websites that use the internet. If they are also slow, that points to a broader connection or device issue rather than TikTok alone, although it does not identify the cause by itself. If other apps work normally, focus the remaining checks on TikTok.
If practical, compare TikTok on Wi-Fi and mobile data. A clear difference between the two is a clue about the connection in use, not proof that the network is the only cause.

3. Close and reopen TikTok
Close TikTok, then launch it again. This is a basic troubleshooting step, not a TikTok-specific official instruction. Check whether the feed, video playback, and controls respond more smoothly after reopening.
4. Restart your phone
Restart the phone, open TikTok, and try the same activity that was lagging. This simple check can help distinguish a temporary slowdown from a problem that persists across app sessions. If other apps remain slow after the restart, the issue may extend beyond TikTok.

5. Use TikTok’s cache controls if available
TikTok’s in-app cache controls may be available in your current version. Look in TikTok’s settings for a cache or free-up-space option, and use the app’s own controls if you find them. Menu names and locations can change, so avoid relying on an old path. Clearing cache is a troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed fix.

Check whether your phone has very little free storage and whether many demanding apps are active at once. These are things to investigate, not proof that either one is causing TikTok’s lag. You do not need to delete personal files just because TikTok is slow; first identify what is using space or resources and decide whether any change is appropriate.

7. Consider TikTok Lite on Android
TikTok describes Lite as an Android-only app with limited features intended to help optimize performance and use less storage. That positioning is not a speed benchmark or a promise that it will run better on a particular device. TikTok’s Android download guidance says LIVE and TikTok Shop are unavailable in its Lite offering.

Only switch if the reduced feature set works for you. For Android downloads, TikTok recommends Google Play for the latest app version and warns against downloading APKs from other websites or QR codes: TikTok’s Android download guidance.

8. Check whether the issue is account- or feature-specific
Notice whether the lag affects the whole app or only a particular feature, and whether it occurs only with one account. TikTok’s Account Status tool can show certain restrictions involving login, posting, commenting, profile editing, and direct messages. It is not a general test of phone hardware, connection quality, or app speed. See TikTok’s account status guidance if a specific account function is affected.
9. Reinstall only after protecting your content and access
Before removing TikTok, make sure you can sign back into your account and that any unsynced content you need is safe. Draft behavior after reinstalling is not established here, so do not assume drafts will be retained. If you are comfortable with that risk, remove and reinstall TikTok through your device’s official app store, then check whether the problem remains.

When the lag persists, report it to TikTok
TikTok’s in-app route starts at Profile > Menu > Settings and privacy > Report a problem. Labels can vary by app version. Use the reporting flow to describe what is slow, when it happens, and which checks you already tried. TikTok’s report-a-problem guidance is available at its Help Center search page.
