Ticket buyer protection is not one universal refund promise. A marketplace guarantee may address whether tickets arrive, are valid, and match the listing; separate event rules govern cancellations and postponements; local law may provide additional rights; and optional insurance may cover certain personal reasons for missing an event. Which remedy applies depends on the seller, the event, the purchase channel, and sometimes where the event takes place.
What does a ticket buyer guarantee cover?
A marketplace guarantee is primarily about the ticket transaction. Depending on the platform and its terms, it may address whether tickets are delivered in time, provide valid entry, and match the order. If a covered problem is confirmed, possible remedies can include comparable or better replacement tickets, a refund, or credit. Coverage, notice requirements, and the available remedy vary by platform and claim.
For example, AXS’s U.S. 100% Buyer Guarantee describes secure transactions, delivery before the event, tickets that are identical or comparable or better, and valid or authentic tickets; it states that return of payment is its guarantee remedy. Read AXS’s purchase agreement for its terms. SeatGeek’s guarantee addresses timely delivery, valid entry, and tickets matching the order, with covered issues handled case by case through remedies that can include comparable or better tickets, a refund, or, subject to applicable law, credit. SeatGeek’s Buyer Guarantee asks buyers to contact it immediately after learning of a problem, so delay may affect the remedy.
StubHub’s FanProtect terms describe timely tickets, valid entry, and tickets that are the same or comparable, with possible replacement tickets, refund, or credit when the policy requirements and timelines are met. Its terms include location-specific exceptions. Check the current FanProtect terms for the order and event location. Ticketmaster directs buyers to their account for event-specific eligibility and notes that limitations can apply; see its refund guidance.

Do I get a refund if my concert is canceled?
Often, a canceled event with no replacement date can qualify for a refund or credit, but the result depends on the platform’s terms, the event organizer’s options, and applicable law. AXS says it may provide a refund or future-purchase credit at its discretion, subject to jurisdictional differences. SeatGeek says it may provide a full refund or, subject to applicable law, credit at its discretion. StubHub’s policy describes a refund or credit at its discretion unless law requires a refund.
Ticketmaster says the organizer determines the event-specific refund or credit options. Ticketmaster processes an approved refund after it receives the funds from the organizer, so an event cancellation alone does not establish the timing or option for every order. Its event refund guidance directs buyers to check their account for order-specific information.

Can I get my money back if the event is postponed?
A postponement is not necessarily treated like a cancellation. If the original ticket remains valid for the new date, platforms generally may not offer a refund unless the organizer provides an option or law requires one. SeatGeek states, “If your event is postponed, you may use the tickets on the rescheduled date.” Its terms also address replacement tickets where required and generally do not provide a postponement refund unless replacement tickets are required or law requires it. AXS likewise says no refund or other compensation is generally due when the original ticket remains valid, except where required by law. StubHub’s policy generally excludes refunds for postponed or rescheduled events, subject to its exceptions, replacement-ticket terms, and applicable law.
Ticketmaster says tickets are generally valid for a moved or rescheduled event, but the organizer may provide a refund or credit option. Check the event notice and the order page rather than assuming that a new date automatically qualifies for a refund.

Who refunds resale tickets?
Start with the seller or marketplace that took payment. A resale buyer should generally submit a claim through the resale marketplace, not through the original box office or a different ticketing platform. The applicable guarantee is usually tied to that purchase channel, and the platform’s terms determine which ticket problems it covers.
For a box-office purchase, follow the box office’s stated process. AXS says its canceled-event card refunds are usually automatic, while box-office purchases are handled at the box office. If the ticket was transferred to you rather than purchased by you, the original purchaser may have to request any available refund or credit.

Can someone who received a transferred ticket get the refund?
Not necessarily. Ticketmaster says a transfer recipient may not be eligible for a refund directly; the original purchaser must handle an available option, and a transferred ticket may need to be returned to that purchaser. Ask the person who bought the ticket to check the order and contact the seller. For a resale ticket, the buyer who paid the resale marketplace should use that marketplace’s claim process.

Processing estimates differ and are not universal legal deadlines. AXS Help Center USA says automatic card refunds for canceled events are usually processed within 30 business days; box-office purchases are handled at the box office. Ticketmaster says an approved refund usually takes up to 30 days after the organizer’s funds are received, according to its policy page updated January 1, 2021. Check the current order notice for the status and payment method.

What can change the refund or credit you receive?
- The event’s status: Cancellation, postponement, rescheduling, and an event that proceeds as planned can have different rules.
- The organizer’s decision: Some platforms offer only the event-specific options authorized by the organizer.
- Where you bought the ticket: Primary sale, resale, transfer, and box-office purchases can follow different processes.
- Notice and documentation: A guarantee may require prompt contact and compliance with its claim process. Keep the order confirmation, event-status notice, seller messages, and evidence of any ticket problem.
- Fees and credit terms: Policies differ on which fees are returned and whether credit is offered. Before accepting credit, check eligible purchases, expiration, transferability, and whether a cash-refund option is available. Ticketmaster says its credits may expire and are nontransferable and noncash; other sellers’ terms differ.
- Location and law: State laws may require refunds in specified circumstances, including some cancellations or tickets that do not match the seller’s description. The Congressional Research Service’s 2025 report, “Tickets for Live Entertainment Events”, describes differences in state-law examples and seller practices. It is a policy overview, not legal advice for an individual purchase. AXS also flags jurisdictional variation in its U.S. agreement. There is no established universal federal refund right for every postponed event.
If a seller does not resolve a valid issue, contact it first and ask your card issuer about its own dispute process and deadlines. Ticketmaster’s purchase-policy language about chargebacks is a contractual statement, not proof that a consumer can never dispute a charge; payment-dispute rights and contract enforceability depend on matters beyond that statement.
Does ticket insurance cover a canceled event?
Optional insurance is separate from a marketplace guarantee. It may cover specified personal contingencies under its own policy, but it should not be assumed to expand the platform’s cancellation promise or cover a promoter cancellation. Read the policy certificate for covered reasons, exclusions, deadlines, and claim requirements. Coverage varies by policy and purchase; a platform’s partner listing does not establish that a policy is available for a particular event or what it covers.

What to do when an event changes or a ticket has a problem
- Open the order in the account used to buy the ticket and confirm the official event status. Do not rely only on a social post or third-party listing.
- Identify the purchase channel: primary sale, resale on the same platform, an external resale site, or box office. Contact the seller that took payment.
- Determine whether the event was canceled or postponed, whether the original ticket remains valid, and whether the organizer announced a refund or credit window.
- Check whether the ticket was transferred or resold. If transferred, ask the original purchaser to review available options; if bought through resale, use that marketplace’s claim process.
- Read the order-specific guarantee and check claim deadlines, fees, payment method, credit terms, and relevant local rules. Keep the confirmation, notices, messages, and proof of any ticket issue.
- If considering optional insurance, review the actual policy certificate rather than relying on a general description of ticket protection.
