EDF has received three replacement steam generators for the 900 MWe Unit 2 pressurized-water reactor at Cruas-Meysse in southeastern France. The verified 2026 account differs from the widely repeated description of four 474-ton units sailing around Spain and Portugal: EDF and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries document a Japan-to-Fos-sur-Mer shipment, a river-port transfer to Cruas and a final move on a special trailer. Installation is planned during Unit 2’s eight-month outage beginning in February 2027.
What arrived at Cruas-Meysse
EDF says the generators arrived by ship from Japan at Fos-sur-Mer, were transferred to the river port at Cruas and then hauled to the nuclear site. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) manufactured them at its Kobe facility. French nuclear regulatory compliance was certified at the end of February 2026 before transport to France.

These are bespoke primary-to-secondary heat exchangers, not ordinary boilers. Their dimensions and mass require a multimodal logistics plan and purpose-built handling equipment even though the reactor remains operating while the equipment is prepared.

Ship from Japan to Fos-sur-Mer
The first leg was an ocean shipment from Japan to Fos-sur-Mer, the major industrial port on France’s Mediterranean coast. EDF’s account identifies Fos-sur-Mer as the arrival port; it does not establish a voyage around Spain and Portugal.

River transfer to Cruas
From Fos-sur-Mer, the units were moved to the river port at Cruas. Using the river network avoids sending the full load through unsuitable stretches of public road and places the cargo close to the plant on the Rhône corridor.
Special trailer to the plant
The final leg used a specific heavy-haul trailer from the Cruas river port to the Cruas-Meysse site. Neither EDF’s 2026 notice nor MHI’s technical information verifies a 22-mile, three-day road crawl, a passage an inch from a roadside cross or any other precise roadside anecdote. Those details should not be treated as established facts for this delivery.

Why the generators can be stored before the reactor outage
EDF plans to prepare the equipment and keep it in dedicated buildings until the Unit 2 reactor building is ready for the replacement work. This separates transport and preparation from the radiological work inside the reactor building. The plant can therefore complete logistics, inspections and staging before the scheduled shutdown rather than tying the delivery timetable to the first day of the outage.

What a nuclear steam generator does
In a pressurized-water reactor, the reactor core heats water in a sealed primary cooling system. That hot, pressurized water passes through thousands of tubes inside each steam generator. Heat crosses the tube walls into a separate secondary-water system, which boils into steam and drives the turbine-generator. The two water circuits remain physically separated.
MHI describes steam generators as among the most important components in a PWR because they provide the heat-transfer boundary between the reactor system and the turbine system. Tube material and integrity are therefore central to long-term plant reliability and safety.

Why Cruas Unit 2 is shutting down in 2027
Fourth ten-year inspection
EDF says the outage is the fourth ten-year inspection for Unit 2 and is scheduled to begin in February 2027. The overall shutdown is planned to last eight months. Steam-generator replacement is expected to occupy about four months of that period.

The inspection combines the generator replacement with the broader examinations, maintenance and modifications required during a periodic ten-year review. EDF frames the program as supporting operation beyond 40 years and moving the unit’s safety level closer to that of newer EPR designs.
What is and is not established about the headline claim
- Established: three generators, approximately 330 tonnes each, manufactured by MHI in Kobe; transport from Japan to Fos-sur-Mer, onward to the Cruas river port and then by special trailer; storage before 2027 installation.
- Not established in the official 2026 records: four generators weighing 474 tonnes each, a documented Spain-and-Portugal voyage, a 22-mile three-day road journey, the roadside-cross incident or exactly one year of storage.
The verified logistics are still a major engineering operation: each component is roughly 21 metres tall, contains thousands of heat-transfer tubes and must arrive in condition for a tightly scheduled reactor outage.
