Threat hunting is an activity; managed detection and response (MDR) is a managed service. A hunt is a deliberate search for adversary behavior or risk that automated alerts may miss. MDR can include continuous monitoring, alert triage, investigation, hunting, containment, and incident response. A managed security service provider (MSSP) may deliver MDR, threat hunting, or both. Because the labels overlap, buyers should judge the actual service boundary, authority, data coverage, and contractual outcomes—not the acronym.
What threat hunting actually is
Threat hunting is a proactive, hypothesis-driven analytic activity. An analyst starts with a question such as “Could an attacker be using valid credentials to move from a workstation to a sensitive server?” and searches endpoint, identity, network, cloud, and application telemetry for evidence. The work may uncover malicious activity, weak controls, or reassuring evidence that narrows risk.
Hunting differs from ordinary alert handling. An alert is generated by a rule, model, or sensor and then investigated. A hunt begins with a hypothesis, intelligence lead, suspicious pattern, or risk assumption and looks for evidence even when no alert fired. A hunt can be a one-time engagement, a scheduled exercise, or a recurring function inside a security operations program. By itself, it does not promise 24/7 monitoring, incident communications, containment, or remediation.
What a hunt produces
- Findings: confirmed activity, benign explanations, or unresolved gaps.
- Scope: affected users, hosts, accounts, cloud resources, time windows, and indicators.
- Detection improvements: new queries, rules, analytic logic, or telemetry requirements.
- Response recommendations: containment, credential changes, hardening, and follow-up investigation.
- Evidence: timelines, queried data, analyst reasoning, and retained artifacts suitable for incident handling.
Good hunting is directed by intelligence and business risk. MITRE’s Threat Intelligence Program mitigation M1019 recommends assigning responsibility, setting intelligence requirements around critical assets, combining internal and external data, mapping intelligence to adversary tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs), and evaluating the program. The page identifies M1019 as version 1.1, last modified December 24, 2024: MITRE Threat Intelligence Program.

What managed detection and response includes
MDR is a service model in which an external provider operates some or all of the detection-and-response function. Provider descriptions commonly include human-led monitoring, investigation, proactive hunting, and response. The exact boundary varies: one MDR service may only investigate and recommend actions, while another may isolate endpoints or disable accounts under pre-approved rules.
MDR normally connects several activities:
- Collecting and normalizing telemetry from agreed data sources.
- Monitoring for suspicious behavior and validating alerts.
- Investigating incidents and determining scope and confidence.
- Conducting proactive or intelligence-led hunts.
- Escalating according to severity and customer notification rules.
- Taking authorized containment or remediation actions, or directing the customer’s team.
- Documenting evidence, decisions, timelines, and recovery recommendations.
NIST SP 800-61 Rev. 3, finalized April 3, 2025, treats incident response as part of broader cybersecurity risk management. NIST says the publication helps organizations prepare for incidents, reduce their impact, and improve detection, response, and recovery: NIST SP 800-61 Rev. 3. An MDR contract should therefore explain how its operating procedures connect with the customer’s incident-response plan rather than treating response as a separate add-on.
MSSP, MDR, and hunting: where the terms overlap
An MSSP is a provider category, not a universal technical specification. An MSSP may manage security tools, provide a security information and event management (SIEM) service, monitor alerts, support compliance reporting, or operate a full detection-and-response capability. MDR is a service offering that may be delivered by an MSSP or by a specialist provider. Threat hunting is a capability that can be purchased independently or embedded in either service.

A New York State Homes and Community Renewal managed-security procurement illustrates the overlap. Its MSSP scope calls for experienced staff, continuous status reporting, SIEM, endpoint detection and response (EDR), MDR and threat-intelligence capabilities, 24/7 monitoring, triage, investigation, response, and support for a cyber incident response team (CIRT). Those are requirements in that procurement, not a universal definition: New York State HCR Managed Security Services RFP.
Vendor explanations are useful for understanding common positioning but should not be treated as standards. Check Point describes MSSPs as often complementing an existing team and MDR as more likely to replace a SOC and conduct proactive hunting: MDR vs. MSSP. CRITICALSTART’s December 2024 buyer guide similarly emphasizes human-led investigation, active hunting, and response for MDR while presenting MSSPs as broader tool-management providers: Buyer’s Guide for Managed Detection and Response. Your statement of work, not the marketing label, determines what is actually delivered.

Side-by-side comparison
| Dimension | Threat hunting | MDR | MSSP service |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary nature | Proactive analytic activity | Managed detection-and-response operating model | Provider category with variable scope |
| Trigger | Hypothesis, intelligence, risk, or suspicious pattern | Alerts, telemetry, incidents, and planned hunts | Contract-defined services and customer objectives |
| Monitoring cadence | Scheduled, continuous, or event-driven; must be specified | Often continuous, but hours and coverage must be stated | May range from tool administration to 24/7 monitoring |
| Response | Findings and recommendations unless response is separately authorized | Investigation plus agreed containment or response | Whatever the contract assigns; may include MDR |
| Typical output | Hunt report, evidence, detections, and gaps | Validated incidents, escalations, actions, and reports | Reports, managed tools, monitoring, response, or combinations |
| Relationship to an internal SOC | Augments analysts or supplies specialist expertise | Can augment, co-manage, or replace defined SOC functions | Often complements internal teams, but scope varies |
The table is a practical comparison, not a formal industry standard. A provider can offer a hunting-only engagement, an MSSP contract with MDR capabilities, or an MDR service that leaves containment entirely to the customer.
Questions an MSSP should answer before proposing a service
1. What business risk and assets are in scope?
List critical applications, identity systems, endpoints, cloud accounts, network segments, data stores, and third parties. Threat-intelligence requirements should be tied to those assets rather than to an undifferentiated feed of indicators. NIST SP 800-150 defines cyber threat information as information that can help an organization identify, assess, monitor, and respond to cyber threats. Its guidance covers sharing goals, sources, scope, distribution rules, and sharing communities: NIST SP 800-150.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →2. Which telemetry is collected and retained?
Specify the exact sources: endpoint events, identity and authentication logs, DNS, proxy, firewall, email, cloud-control-plane activity, SaaS audit logs, application logs, and vulnerability data. State collection gaps, parsing responsibilities, retention periods, search latency, and who pays for storage or licensing. A hunt cannot reliably examine data the provider never receives or cannot search.
3. Is hunting scheduled, continuous, or event-driven?
“Proactive hunting” is not a sufficient service level. Define the number or duration of hunts, the analytic themes, the assets covered, the evidence delivered, and whether emergency hunts are included after new intelligence or a customer incident. If hunting is continuous, explain how analysts distinguish routine monitoring from deeper hypothesis-based work.
4. Who validates alerts and declares an incident?
Document severity levels, confidence thresholds, duplicate handling, false-positive treatment, and the evidence required before escalation. State whether the provider can open an incident without customer confirmation and how uncertain findings are communicated.

5. Who can contain, remediate, and communicate?
Write an authority matrix for endpoint isolation, account disablement, token revocation, indicator blocking, firewall changes, mailbox actions, cloud-resource suspension, and system restoration. For each action, identify approval requirements, emergency exceptions, rollback steps, and the customer contact. Also define who leads communications with executives, legal counsel, regulators, insurers, affected users, and law enforcement.

6. How does the service integrate with incident response?
Map provider procedures to the customer’s incident-response plan, on-call roster, evidence handling, and recovery process. NIST SP 800-61 Rev. 3 explicitly integrates incident-response recommendations throughout cybersecurity risk management; an MDR service should show where preparation, detection, response, and recovery responsibilities meet.
Designing an intelligence-led hunting program
- Set intelligence requirements. Start with crown-jewel assets, likely adversaries, exposed technologies, and business consequences. Record what decision each requirement must support.
- Gather internal and external information. Use incident records, vulnerability data, identity anomalies, endpoint observations, sector information, and trusted sharing communities. Define handling and distribution rules before sharing sensitive data.
- Translate intelligence into behaviors. Map adversary TTPs to observable events and identify the data source, query logic, expected baseline, and likely false positives. ATT&CK can provide a common vocabulary, but its use does not imply endorsement of a product or provider.
- Run and document the hunt. Record the hypothesis, time range, queries, systems searched, analysts involved, negative results, and evidence. A clean result is useful only when the search coverage and limitations are clear.
- Convert findings into durable controls. Turn confirmed behavior into detections, prevention rules, hardening tasks, playbook updates, and new collection requirements. Assign owners and due dates.
- Evaluate the program. Review whether requirements were answered, critical assets were covered, data was sufficient, detections improved, and response decisions became faster or more reliable. MITRE’s M1019 guidance specifically calls for evaluating the threat-intelligence program.
MITRE states that ATT&CK is updated bi-annually and is derived mainly from public threat intelligence and incident reporting. The ATT&CK FAQ also cautions that use of ATT&CK must not be presented as MITRE endorsement of a product or service: ATT&CK FAQ.
Remote-management tools: a special MSSP risk
MSSPs and managed-service teams commonly use remote monitoring and management (RMM) software to monitor endpoints and interact with remote hosts. The NSA describes RMM as commonly used by managed service providers and help desks for security or technical support: Guidance for Securing Remote Monitoring and Management Software.
The same access that enables support can be abused by a malicious actor. An MSSP agreement should therefore address:

Ask providers to demonstrate the workflow with a realistic scenario: a compromised identity, suspicious RMM activity, and lateral movement toward a critical server. The demonstration should show the first alert or hunt lead, analyst validation, customer notification, authorized containment, evidence preservation, recovery handoff, and final report. This reveals more than a feature list.

Buying the label instead of the outcome
A proposal may say “MDR” while excluding cloud logs, identity telemetry, containment, or after-hours escalation. Fix this by converting every promise into an in-scope activity, data source, time target, owner, and deliverable.
Calling alert forwarding “response”
Forwarding a notification to a customer mailbox is not the same as investigating, containing, or coordinating an incident. Require examples of analyst decisions and a written escalation path.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHunting without usable data
Analysts cannot validate credential abuse or lateral movement if authentication, endpoint, or cloud events are absent or retained for too short a period. Make data-quality checks and collection remediation part of onboarding.

Unclear emergency authority
Waiting for an unavailable approver can prolong an incident, while unrestricted provider access can create unacceptable business risk. Use pre-approved action bands, named alternates, time limits, and post-action review.
Overstating ATT&CK alignment
Mapping a service to ATT&CK demonstrates a vocabulary and analytic coverage claim; it does not certify effectiveness or imply MITRE endorsement. Ask which techniques are actually observable in your environment and what evidence supports the mapping.
Ignoring the provider’s own access path
An MSSP can become a high-value target through privileged consoles, APIs, and RMM tools. Include provider-access monitoring, credential lifecycle controls, breach notification, and joint exercises in the contract.
A practical implementation sequence for an MSSP
- Baseline the customer. Inventory critical assets, identities, telemetry, existing SOC duties, regulatory obligations, and current response authority.
- Define the operating model. Decide whether the service augments, co-manages, or replaces specific internal functions. Name the customer decision-maker and backup.
- Close data gaps. Prioritize sources required for the customer’s top threats and document unsupported systems or retention limitations.
- Run a pilot hunt. Select a high-value hypothesis, document coverage and blind spots, and produce both findings and detection improvements.
- Approve playbooks. Test alert triage, severity assignment, notifications, containment, evidence handling, and recovery handoff with a tabletop exercise.
- Measure and tune. Review missed data, false positives, escalation quality, hunt results, response friction, and outstanding remediation. Change the service when risk or technology changes.
Useful measures are service-specific rather than universal statistics: percentage of in-scope data sources healthy, time from evidence to customer notification, proportion of hunts producing a new detection or control, completion of agreed response actions, and closure of telemetry gaps. Report the definitions and measurement window with every figure.
Bottom line for MSSP buyers and operators
Threat hunting answers “What suspicious activity or exposure might we be missing?” MDR answers “Who continuously detects, investigates, and responds, under what authority?” MSSP answers “Which external provider operates these security functions?” The three concepts can coexist, but none of the labels alone establishes coverage.
Choose the service only after documenting assets, telemetry, hunting cadence, analyst responsibilities, escalation timing, response authority, RMM protections, evidence requirements, and exit terms. That contract-level clarity is what turns a promising acronym into a dependable security capability.
