Threads and Gemini Gems are not competing versions of the same product. Threads is Meta’s social network for publishing and discovering public conversations. Gemini Gems are saved instructions that customize Google’s Gemini assistant for recurring work. Choose Threads when you want interaction with other people; choose a Gem when you want repeatable, guided answers from an AI assistant.
The practical differences are the job each service performs, who sees the result, how information is shared, and which account or device can access a feature. The comparison below reflects product descriptions available in October 2026; social features, regional eligibility and Google’s Gems transition can change.

A public conversation network
Meta introduced Threads as an app built by the Instagram team for text updates and public conversations. A post is intended to be read, answered and discovered by other people rather than used as a private instruction to software. You can publish your own updates, follow accounts, browse a feed, reply to posts and participate in ongoing topics.

The social model changes how you judge a result. A useful Threads post is one that communicates clearly to an audience, invites an informed response or adds context to an existing discussion. Its value can come from the people who see and answer it, not only from the original author.
Features available in the current product
Meta’s June 16, 2026 announcement described communities that had graduated from beta, community discovery and identity features, and a “Your Algo” control for choosing how a feed is organized. Threads also has custom feeds, reply controls and messaging. These features do not necessarily appear in exactly the same way for every account: Meta rolls out changes over time and availability can depend on country or platform.
Meta reported 500 million monthly active users in that June 16, 2026 announcement. That is a company-reported Threads figure, not an independent measurement and not a statistic that can be compared with a Gemini Gems user count. No comparable published Gems user total is established in the official Google material considered here.

What happens to a post
- You write and publish a text update, optionally using the media and formatting options currently offered in your account.
- People who follow you, discover the post through feeds or communities, or arrive through a shared link can read it.
- They can reply, follow the author, reshare or otherwise interact using controls available in their region.
- Your replies and subsequent posts become part of the visible conversation, subject to privacy and reply settings.
The original launch description documented text posts of up to 500 characters, links, photos and videos of up to five minutes. Those were launch-era details; do not treat them as a complete statement of the limits in the current Threads app without checking its present help or composer interface.
Optional connection to the fediverse
Meta describes the fediverse as a set of interconnected but independent social servers. Threads’ ActivityPub compatibility is optional, not automatic. Meta has described eligibility and availability as depending on factors such as age, having a public profile and country. When sharing is enabled and an account is eligible, some content can be visible beyond Threads; that does not mean every post is federated or that Meta owns the wider fediverse.

What Gemini Gems are designed to do
Saved instructions for repeatable Gemini work
Google describes Gems as custom versions of Gemini that help with repeat tasks or provide focused expertise. A Gem stores detailed guidance about how Gemini should respond. Instead of rewriting the same role, format, constraints or workflow in every prompt, you select the Gem and supply the task-specific information.
Google Gemini Apps Help describes the feature this way: “You can create and save Gems to customize responses in Gemini Apps to your specific needs.” The saved instructions shape Gemini’s replies; they do not create a public social profile or a standing conversation with other users.
How a Gem affects a conversation
- You open Gemini and choose a saved Gem.
- You enter the request for the current task.
- Gemini combines your request with the Gem’s instructions and produces a response.
- You can continue the conversation, change the request or select another Gem for a different type of work.
For example, a Gem might consistently ask for missing requirements before drafting a project brief, return code explanations in a specified format or turn meeting notes into an action list with named owners. The benefit is consistency and reduced setup, not an audience of readers.
Instructions and reference files
Google’s March 2025 product announcement said users could write instructions, preview a Gem and add files for reference. A reference file gives Gemini material to use for the task; it does not turn the Gem into a public document library. Treat access, file limits and supported formats as interface-dependent, because Google can change them by account or product version.
Where Gems can be created and used
Google’s help documentation says custom Gems can be created, edited or deleted only in the Gemini web app. A Gem created there can appear in the Gemini mobile app and in the Gemini side panel in Google Workspace. In practical terms, a phone can be used to run a Gem that already exists, but the initial creation and later editing require the web experience according to that documentation.

Account and age requirements apply. Work or school accounts can be governed by different terms or administrator controls, and Google notes that experimental Gems can vary in quality and availability. Confirm the account type and current interface before giving someone a fixed set of button names.

Audience versus assistant
Threads is built around other people. Your audience may include followers, community participants and, in eligible cases, people on connected fediverse servers. A Gem is primarily for the person using Gemini. Sharing a Gem means giving others access to a reusable instruction setup under Google’s sharing rules; it is not the same as publishing a post into a public feed.
Conversation discovery versus task repeatability
Threads helps you find conversations you did not start. Feeds, follows, communities and replies expose you to new viewpoints and updates. Gems help you repeat a conversation pattern you already understand. They reduce repeated prompting but do not independently provide a social discovery layer.
Persistent social record versus reusable configuration
A Threads account accumulates posts, replies, follows, feeds and messages. Those objects can be read and responded to over time. A Gem is a configuration that is invoked when you choose it; the useful output is the generated response, while the saved asset is the instruction set.
Public identity versus private workflow
Threads activity is associated with a social identity and can be visible according to post, profile and sharing settings. A Gem is normally part of an individual or organization’s Gemini workflow. Sharing and Workspace administration can broaden access, so do not assume every Gem is private, but its design goal is guided assistance rather than public posting.

Different kinds of sharing
On Threads, sharing means distributing a social post, feed or conversation to an audience. In Gemini, sharing a Gem means making its saved instructions available to other people under Google’s controls. A shared Gem does not automatically publish the user’s entire Gemini history, and a Threads post does not become an AI instruction merely because it contains advice.
Which one fits a particular job?
Choose Threads when the outcome requires people
- You want to announce an idea and collect replies from a public audience.
- You need to follow a topic, creator or community over time.
- You are looking for conversation, perspective, news discussion or social networking.
- You want to publish a short update that others can reshare or answer.
- You need community or messaging features rather than generated text.
Choose a Gem when the outcome requires repeatable guidance
- You perform the same kind of analysis, drafting or transformation repeatedly.
- You want Gemini to follow a stable tone, structure, checklist or role.
- You have reference material that should be considered for recurring tasks.
- You are building a personal or team workflow inside Gemini rather than addressing a public audience.
- You want to spend less time restating instructions in every conversation.
Using both without treating them as substitutes
A person can use the services in sequence without making them competitors. For example, you might use a Gem to organize notes into possible discussion points, then decide which point to publish on Threads. The Gem helps prepare a draft; Threads supplies the human audience and responses. Review generated material for accuracy and privacy before posting it publicly.
How to create and use a Gemini Gem
The exact labels can change, but Google’s documented workflow is web-led. Use the following sequence on an account that has Gems enabled.
- Open the Gemini web app and sign in with the account you intend to use. A work or school account may have different administrator rules from a personal account.
- Open the Gems area and choose the option to create a custom Gem. If the option is absent, check account eligibility, age requirements and whether the feature is available in your region or organization.
- Give the Gem a clear name that describes the recurring job, such as “Project brief editor” or “Study question coach.”
- Write detailed instructions. Specify the role Gemini should take, the information it should request, the output format, tone, length, constraints and what it should do when information is missing.
- Add reference files if the interface and your account support them. State in the instructions how those files should be used and what to do when they do not contain an answer.
- Use the preview function to test representative prompts, including an incomplete request and one that should be refused or qualified.
- Save the Gem. Google says saved custom Gems can then appear in the Gemini mobile app and the Gemini side panel in Workspace.
- When the recurring task arises, select the Gem before entering the request. Review the response rather than assuming the saved instructions guarantee factual or complete output.
- To change behavior, return to the Gemini web app and edit the Gem. Google’s help documentation also places deletion in the web app.
Writing instructions that remain useful
- Describe the job in one sentence before listing detailed rules.
- Define the expected sections, units, audience and level of explanation.
- Tell Gemini to identify uncertainty instead of inventing missing facts.
- Separate permanent rules from information that changes for each request.
- Do not place confidential information in a Gem unless your organization’s policy allows it.
How to start using Threads
- Install or open Threads through its current app or web experience and sign in using the account options presented on screen.
- Complete the profile and privacy choices carefully. Whether a profile is public affects who can discover and interact with its posts and can affect eligibility for some fediverse features.
- Follow accounts or topics that match your interests, then inspect the available feed and custom-feed controls.
- Publish a short update when you have a clear point to share. Check the audience and reply controls before posting.
- Use replies, communities and messaging to participate in conversations rather than treating the service as a one-way publishing tool.
- If fediverse sharing is offered for your account, read the current eligibility and privacy explanation before enabling it. Participation is optional and does not make all activity automatically federated.
Because Meta changes features through staged rollouts, two users can see different controls at the same time. The app’s current settings and help text take precedence over launch descriptions.

The announced Gems transition in November 2026
Google’s Gemini Apps Help page currently displays this notice: “Starting in November 2026, Gems will go away on personal Google accounts and automatically transition to skills.” The notice specifically refers to personal Google accounts. It should not be expanded to every Workspace, school or managed account without a newer Google statement covering those accounts.

If you rely on a personal-account Gem, record its purpose, instructions and important reference-file list before the transition window. Recheck Google’s help documentation immediately before making migration plans because timing, naming and automatic-conversion behavior can change. A transition notice is not evidence that every Gem will behave identically after conversion.
Common misunderstandings to avoid
“Threads is Meta’s AI assistant.”
Threads is a social network for text updates and public conversations. Its posts can contain advice or AI-generated text, but the service’s defining interaction is publishing and responding to people.
“A Gem is a public Threads-style profile.”
A Gem is saved guidance for Gemini. Sharing a Gem can let other people use that guidance, but it does not create a public feed of the user’s Gemini conversations.
“You can create a Gem directly in the mobile app.”
Google’s help documentation places custom Gem creation, editing and deletion in the Gemini web app. Mobile can display and use created Gems, subject to account availability.
“Every Threads post enters the fediverse.”
Fediverse sharing is optional and eligibility has been described in terms of age, public-profile status and country. Do not assume universal or automatic federation.
“The 500 million figure proves Threads is better.”
Meta’s 500 million monthly active users figure is a company-reported measure of Threads in June 2026. It says nothing about the quality or suitability of Gems, and no matching official Gems user count is available for a like-for-like comparison.
Bottom line for choosing between them
Use Threads when you need a public social space: publish, follow, discover, reply, message and participate in communities. Use Gemini Gems when you need a reusable set of instructions that makes Gemini more consistent for a recurring task. Their purposes, audiences and access rules differ enough that asking which one is “better” misses the real decision. The useful question is whether your desired outcome comes from people interacting with a post or from an AI assistant following saved guidance.
