Bluesky offers more choice among feed algorithms; Threads adds a more direct, temporary way to steer recommendations. Both let you choose custom feeds, but the controls work differently: Bluesky lets you subscribe to feeds made with different algorithms, while Meta says Threads’ Dear Algo feature lets you publicly ask for more or less of a topic in your recommendations for three days. Neither app gives users complete control over every ranking decision, and which feels better depends on how you want to shape your feed.

What “control over your feed” means

Feed control is not a single switch. It includes the ability to separate posts from accounts you follow from recommended content, choose different recommendation systems, ask for a change in what gets recommended, and filter unwanted interactions or topics. Those controls affect the experience in different ways: changing feeds is not the same as changing a recommendation, and moderation tools do not make an algorithm user-authored.

The comparison here is about features described in official Bluesky and Meta materials, not a usability test. Those sources do not establish a measured overall winner or show that every user will find one app easier to control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It helps to separate four questions. First, where do followed accounts’ posts appear, and how much recommended content is mixed in? Second, can you switch to a different feed with a different selection or ranking approach? Third, can you directly ask the system to show more or less of a topic, and does that change persist? Finally, what can you do about unwanted accounts, words, replies, or labels? The two apps offer controls across these areas, but they do not answer each question in the same way.

“More control” can therefore mean either more choice over the algorithmic feed you use or a more immediate way to influence what recommendations contain. Bluesky’s documented design puts particular emphasis on the first. Threads has custom-feed options too, and Dear Algo adds the second kind of control. These are distinct approaches rather than a simple feature-count contest.

How the two apps shape the main feed

Threads mixes followed accounts and recommendations

When Threads launched, Meta described its feed as a mix of posts from accounts a person follows and recommended posts, including posts from creators they had not discovered. That makes recommendations part of the feed experience, not just an optional separate destination. Meta’s launch announcement also described hidden words for filtering replies. Meta’s Threads launch announcement

That launch description is useful context for understanding why later feed controls matter: a person may see both familiar voices and suggested content in the same experience. But the announcement is historical, and it should not be treated as a complete description of every current ranking detail. Meta’s published materials do not provide a full current formula explaining how Threads ranks each recommendation.

Bluesky separates Following from discovery

Bluesky describes a chronological Following feed alongside Discover and other algorithmic feeds. Its 2023 explanation said Discover combined trending content from the network with followed accounts and accounts near a user’s social graph. That is a dated description of the design; it should not be read as a complete account of today’s Discover ranking formula. Bluesky’s 2023 explanation of custom feeds

Bluesky’s 2024 welcome article again described Following as chronological and Discover as a default discovery feed, while emphasizing that users can choose feeds rather than rely on just one algorithm. Bluesky’s 2024 welcome article

The practical distinction is that Following and Discover serve different purposes: one is described as chronological posts from accounts you follow, while the other is a discovery-oriented feed. Bluesky’s materials also describe algorithmic feeds beyond those defaults. The user can therefore choose to spend time in different feed views, rather than treating one recommendation stream as the only available option.

There is an important limit to that description. The 2023 blog post explains the original Discover design, not the full details of the current system. Feed algorithms and interfaces can change, so a dated explanation is best used to understand Bluesky’s general feed-choice model, not to predict exactly why an individual post appears in Discover today.

Custom feeds: choose a different way to rank posts

Bluesky makes feed choice its central distinction

Bluesky lets users find and subscribe to custom feeds, each of which can use a different algorithm to select and order posts. In its user FAQ, Bluesky describes custom feeds as a way to choose the algorithm powering the social-media experience. The practical effect is that you can use a feed designed around a particular subject or selection method instead of relying only on the default discovery feed. Bluesky’s user FAQ

This is a choice of feed, not a promise that every post will be visible or that the user can inspect and tune every ranking rule. The reviewed materials describe a marketplace of feeds that people can find and subscribe to. They do not establish that every feed exposes its full logic in a way an ordinary user can audit, nor do they show that one feed will suit every person who subscribes.

Bluesky’s own 2023 description captures the design goal. The team wrote: “Instead of using a black box algorithm that leaves users guessing how posts are ranked or how to get to the ‘top’ of an algorithm, we provide an open marketplace of feeds and let users choose which ones they want to use.” That is the platform’s explanation of its approach, not an independent assessment that the system is wholly transparent or that every algorithm is equally understandable. Bluesky’s FAQ reports more than 40,000 algorithmic feeds as of May 2026. That is Bluesky’s own figure, not an independently audited count and not evidence that every feed is useful, active, or high quality. Meta’s official Threads sources do not give a comparable feed-count figure. Bluesky’s company FAQ

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The number is evidence of the scale of Bluesky’s feed ecosystem as the company reports it, but it should not be mistaken for a quality ranking. A large catalog may offer more variety to explore; it does not tell you whether the particular feeds you want exist, how well they work, or how often they are maintained. There is no equivalent official Threads number in Meta’s published sources, so comparing the apps by feed count is not possible on this evidence.

Bluesky’s 2026 roadmap says custom feeds power trending topics and that the company plans to make feeds more central, describing the planned work as experimental. Treat that as roadmap intent, not a guarantee that a particular planned change is already available. Bluesky’s January 2026 roadmap

That distinction between current description and future plan matters. The FAQ and earlier product explanations describe custom-feed choice as an existing part of the service. The roadmap points to work the company is exploring; it is not proof that every planned feed change has shipped or that the product will work in a particular way later.

Threads lets you find, pin, and set custom feeds

Threads also supports custom feeds. Meta says people can share them, explore public feeds from profiles, and pin favorites to the home screen. In its March 2025 announcement, Meta said users could select a custom feed as the default feed that opens when they launch Threads. These options are useful for organizing views around selected profiles or topics. Meta’s announcement about sharing custom feeds · Meta’s announcement about Threads personalization and controls

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those functions address both discovery and convenience. Sharing a feed and exploring public feeds from profiles can help people find views created around selected profiles or topics. Pinning a favorite makes that view easier to reach, while choosing a default changes which feed opens when Threads launches, according to Meta’s announcement. The benefit is organization and a preferred starting point; it does not mean that a pinned feed or default setting gives the user control over all recommendation ranking inside Threads.

Threads also offers feed organization on the web: Meta described custom-feed ordering and columns for its web experience in April 2025. Meta’s Threads web feature announcement

That web announcement is relevant if someone uses Threads on a computer and wants to arrange custom-feed views there. It is a separate dimension from algorithmic control: ordering and columns help organize the interface, while the feed itself determines what posts are selected. Meta’s published material does not provide a comparable feature-count statistic for Threads or support a claim that its custom feeds work exactly like Bluesky’s.

Dear Algo: Threads’ direct, short-lived request

Meta introduced Dear Algo in February 2026 as a way to request more or less of a subject in the Threads feed. The user writes a public post beginning “Dear Algo” and states the requested change. Meta says the adjustment lasts three days. It is therefore a temporary recommendation steer, not a persistent private preference setting. Because the request is public, it also differs from quietly changing a feed or setting. Meta’s Dear Algo announcement

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For someone asking how to make recommendations shift without selecting a different feed, that is the most direct documented control in this comparison. The core steps described by Meta are to make a public Threads post that begins with “Dear Algo” and state the topic you would like to see more or less of. Meta’s announcement does not specify additional commands or guarantee that every phrasing will produce a particular result, so it is better not to treat it as a precise settings interface.

  • 【Plug and play】: This mouse and keyboard pad is powered by USB, plug and play, no driver required. One button control light modes. Press one time to change the lighting mode, press twice to change the brightness, press and hold about 3 seconds turn ON/OFF.

The three-day duration is central to how the feature should be understood. Meta describes it as a short-term adjustment, not a lasting preference that remains in place indefinitely. If the request is meant to respond to a temporary interest or a short-lived desire to see less of a subject, that limited window may be useful. Someone seeking a permanent change should not assume that Dear Algo provides one.

It is also not a private setting: the request is made in a public post. That may matter to people who would rather adjust their recommendations without announcing the preference to other users. Meta’s materials describe the public-post mechanism, but do not establish whether the content of the request is handled in any other way or what exact outcome a particular request will produce.

Availability can vary by region or rollout. Check whether the feature appears in your account before relying on it; Meta’s announcement does not make a universal availability claim for every user.

What moderation and reply controls change—and what they do not

Bluesky: mute, block, and use moderation services

Bluesky presents moderation as a combination of automated filtering, administrative action, and community labeling. Its user FAQ says muting an account prevents notifications and top-level posts from that account from appearing to you; blocking prevents interactions between accounts. Bluesky also describes moderation services that users can stack. These tools help manage unwanted content and contact, but they are separate from choosing a feed algorithm. Bluesky’s moderation and company FAQ · Bluesky’s user FAQ

These controls answer a different problem from feed selection. A mute changes what you see from a particular account and whether you receive its notifications, according to Bluesky’s FAQ. A block prevents interaction between accounts. Moderation services and community labels contribute another layer of filtering or labeling. They can shape the overall experience, but they do not, by themselves, replace the feed algorithm or make every item in a feed a product of the user’s own rules.

Bluesky’s FAQ frames moderation as a combination rather than one universal control. Automated filtering, administrative actions, and community labeling play different roles. That means a user should not interpret the existence of a custom feed as a guarantee that moderation choices are identical across feeds, or that choosing one algorithm settles every question about unwanted content and interactions.

Threads: hidden words and reply management

Meta’s Threads materials describe hidden words and controls for managing replies, including reply filters, approval options, and controls over who can engage. Such tools can reduce unwanted language or interactions. They do not switch the feed to chronological order or give the user authorship over recommendation ranking. Meta’s Threads launch announcement · Meta’s Threads personalization and reply-controls announcement

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hidden words and reply settings therefore belong in the comparison, but they should not be confused with feed choice. Hidden words concern filtering language, while reply approvals, filters, and engagement controls concern who can respond and how replies are managed. They can make interactions more manageable without changing the basic distinction between followed posts and recommendations or letting a user specify the full recommendation formula.

In short, both services document ways to limit unwanted material or interactions, but the tools differ. Bluesky’s materials specifically describe muting, blocking, and stackable moderation services; Meta’s Threads materials describe hidden words and reply controls. The official materials do not support a blanket claim that one set is more effective, safer, or easier to use in practice.

Which app should you choose?

If your priority is… Better fit based on documented controls Why
Trying different algorithmic views Bluesky It emphasizes discovering and subscribing to feeds made with different algorithms.
Making a custom feed easy to reach or open by default Both Both support custom feeds; Threads documents pinning and setting a custom feed as the default opening feed.
Requesting more or less of a topic directly Threads Dear Algo provides a public request that Meta says affects recommendations for three days.
Managing unwanted accounts or interactions Both, with different tools Bluesky documents muting, blocking, and moderation services; Threads documents hidden words and reply controls.

Choose Bluesky if your idea of control is selecting among distinct feed algorithms and organizing your experience around them. Choose Threads if you value custom feeds plus an explicit, temporary request to adjust recommendation topics. These are differences in documented control styles, not proof that one app produces a better feed for everyone.

Ask yourself what kind of frustration you are trying to solve. If you want a chronological view of followed accounts and the option to try different discovery algorithms, Bluesky’s described feed model is a closer match. If you want custom feeds that you can pin or set as your launch view, Threads documents those conveniences as well. If your priority is to make a direct request for more or less of a subject, Threads’ Dear Algo is the clearest documented match, with the caveats that the request is public and temporary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your concern is harmful interactions or unwanted posts from particular accounts, compare the moderation tools rather than assuming the feed controls solve that problem. Bluesky describes muting, blocking, automated filtering, administrative actions, and community labels. Threads describes hidden words and reply-management options. The official materials do not offer a controlled comparison of their effectiveness, so your best fit depends on which kind of control you value and which features are available in your account.

Someone looking for “complete control” should set expectations carefully. Neither company’s materials establish that users can inspect or dictate every decision behind every recommendation. Bluesky’s design lets users choose among feeds, while Threads adds a direct temporary request; neither description amounts to a promise that every ranking choice is transparent or user-authored.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—show

The platform materials establish that both apps offer feed-shaping features, but they do not provide an independent comparative measure of user control or a direct usability study. Bluesky’s reported feed count is a company-published number, and Meta’s Threads sources have no comparable count. Product interfaces and feature availability may change, so consult each service’s current help or in-app settings for the exact controls available to your account.

The evidence is strongest for the existence and stated design of the controls: Bluesky describes Following, Discover, and custom feeds; Meta describes Threads custom-feed sharing, pinning, default selection, and Dear Algo. It is weaker for questions the sources do not answer, such as which app’s recommendations are more accurate, which feed users find easier to manage, or whether one platform’s controls lead to greater satisfaction. This article does not claim those outcomes.

Timing also matters. The cited Bluesky explanation of Discover dates to July 2023, its welcome article to September 2024, and its roadmap to January 2026. Meta’s cited announcements cover the Threads launch in July 2023, custom feeds and personalization in 2025, and Dear Algo in February 2026. These materials give a useful record of documented product features, but they are not a guarantee that every interface or rollout remains unchanged. Check current in-app options, particularly for features with rollout caveats.

Are Bluesky’s 40,000-plus feeds independently verified?

No independent audit is established in Bluesky’s cited FAQ. Bluesky’s FAQ reports more than 40,000 algorithmic feeds as of May 2026. It is a company-published figure and does not demonstrate that every feed is active, useful, or high quality. Meta’s reviewed Threads sources do not provide a comparable official count.

Do moderation controls change which algorithm my feed uses?

Not necessarily. Muting, blocking, hidden words, community labels, and reply controls affect unwanted accounts, content, or interactions. They are related to the overall experience but separate from choosing a feed algorithm or changing recommendation ranking. The cited materials do not establish that moderation controls amount to full control over a feed.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Bluesky is the stronger fit if feed control means choosing among different algorithmic views. Threads is the stronger fit if you want custom feeds that can be pinned or opened by default, plus a direct but public and three-day request to steer recommendations with Dear Algo. Both offer moderation-related controls, but those do not make their ranking systems fully user-authored. This is a comparison of documented features—not a measured verdict on which app delivers the better feed.
