Thornblade is a Grass-type DPS in its Basic form. Its defining mechanic, Sword Dance, rewards alternating skills and basic attacks: skills build up to four stacks, and each empowered basic attack consumes one stack for 180% extra damage. Thornblade’s typing changes with its form, so the right answer for its type, habitat, and matchup depends on whether you are using Basic, Prismana, Thunderstorm, or Towerwood. Keep Thornblade in the damage slot and use the other three positions for support, Break, and sustain coverage rather than treating one community lineup as a universally proven best team.

The numbers above are in-game index values, not results from an external combat benchmark. The Prismana entry is recorded separately as No. 035, while Basic Thornblade is No. 034; do not treat every form record as if it were the same numbered entry.
What type is Thornblade?
Basic Thornblade: Grass
The Official Aniimo Wiki classifies Basic Thornblade as Grass and gives it the DPS role. That is the form most players mean when they ask for Thornblade’s type without naming a form. Its listed 121 ATK and 509 total attributes support a damage-dealer position, while Sword Dance supplies the burst pattern that makes its basic attacks especially important.

Prismana adds Water to Thornblade’s Grass typing. It is listed as a separate No. 035 record and has 499 total attributes with 121 ATK in the official index. The form should therefore be evaluated as Grass/Water for elemental planning, not simply as Basic Thornblade with a cosmetic change.

Thunderstorm: Grass/Electric
Thunderstorm is listed as Grass/Electric. This gives you a form option when an Electric secondary type fits the encounter better than Water or a single Grass typing. The official entry also lists Sea of Flowers as its habitat.
Towerwood: Grass
Towerwood is listed as Grass, and its official habitat entry is Rosetower Woods. Because its location and form record differ from the Basic entry, use the form name when checking an Aniilog or comparing capture information.
How Thornblade’s abilities work
Sword Dance: the central damage loop
The official trait text states: “Each skill used grants 1 stack of [Sword Dance], up to 4 stacks, lasting 15s. Each basic attack costs 1 stack of [Sword Dance] to deal 180% extra damage.” In practical terms, Sword Dance turns skills into setup and basic attacks into the payoff.

- Use skills to generate Sword Dance stacks.
- Track the 15-second lifetime of each stack; do not assume a stack remains indefinitely while you switch targets or wait.
- Use a basic attack to consume one stack when you can connect safely.
- Repeat the skill-to-basic cycle rather than spending every skill and then allowing the stacks to expire unused.
At four stacks, Thornblade has the largest stored sequence available from this trait, but that does not mean you must always wait for four before attacking. If a target is about to move, become invulnerable, or die, spending one or two available stacks is usually more useful than losing them to the timer. The important rule is to make basic attacks while stacks exist and to keep generating stacks with skills as the encounter permits.
Thorny Defense: mitigation, counter, and conditional critical rate
Basic Thorny Defense reduces damage taken by 20% and counters when Thornblade is attacked. If Thornblade is attacked just as the skill is used, the Basic entry says it grants a 30% critical-rate increase for 15 seconds. This creates a timing window: activating the stance immediately before an incoming hit is more valuable than pressing it after the attack has already landed.
There is a form-specific documentation difference. The Prismana record lists the critical-rate effect as lasting 10 seconds, whereas the Basic record lists 15 seconds. Treat those as separate form values until the game displays a unified value in your current client; do not carry the Basic duration over to Prismana automatically.

What the official role classification means
Thornblade is not documented as a healer or a dedicated Break specialist. Its official Basic classification is DPS, so the team should be built around enabling its damage windows. Thorny Defense gives it a way to survive and punish an attack, but the skill does not change Thornblade’s primary job: deal damage while allies provide the coverage it lacks.

The following sequence translates the trait wording into an encounter plan. Exact cooldowns, enemy behavior, and form interactions can change how quickly you repeat it.
- Open with a skill. Begin building Sword Dance rather than leading with an unempowered basic attack when you have a safe setup opportunity.
- Build toward the available stack limit. Continue using skills until you have the number of stacks the situation can safely support, up to four.
- Spend stacks on basic attacks. Use empowered basics during your damage window. Each one consumes a stack and receives the trait’s 180% extra damage.
- Rebuild before the timer wins. Return to skills before the 15-second stack duration expires, especially after movement, a forced dodge, or a target change.
- Reserve Thorny Defense for contact. Use it when an attack is about to connect so the 20% damage reduction and counter matter. For the Basic form, align the hit with activation if you want the documented 30% critical-rate window.
- Adjust to the fight. Against a short-lived target, spend stacks early. Against a durable target, cycle skills and basics continuously and use the defensive stance for predictable incoming attacks.
Form selection and build decisions
Choose the form for the matchup, not only the highest-looking number
Basic, Prismana, Thunderstorm, and Towerwood do not present the same typing. Start by identifying the encounter’s elemental demands, then select the form whose Grass, Water, or Electric combination gives your team the most useful coverage. The available data does not establish a universal damage ranking among forms, so claiming that one is always superior would go beyond the documented evidence.
Use Ferocious Fang only as a guide recommendation
AniimoVerse names Ferocious Fang as a held-item recommendation for Thornblade and pairs Thornblade with Melloblum as an ideal partner. That is current guide advice, not an independently tested guarantee. If your build has a different item that improves the way you maintain Sword Dance or survive the encounter, compare the actual effect in your client rather than assuming the recommendation is mandatory.
Make defense timing part of the build
A Thornblade player who never times Thorny Defense around an incoming hit gives up much of the skill’s value. Practice recognizing predictable attacks, telegraphed counters, and moments when a boss is committed to Thornblade’s position. The stance is not merely a panic button: its mitigation, counter, and conditional critical-rate effect are strongest when the activation and the hit coincide.
Team roles that complement Thornblade
Keep Thornblade in the DPS slot. The remaining positions should answer three questions:

- Who keeps Thornblade or the party functioning through the encounter? This is the support or sustain slot.
- Who creates Break opportunities or controls an enemy’s pressure? This is the Break slot.
- Does the fight need dedicated regeneration, or can support effects cover survival while you add more control or damage?
This role-first approach is more reliable than copying a lineup without checking the encounter. It also allows you to change a single partner when the enemy’s elemental profile or attack pattern changes.

That guide identifies its game-data build as 1.0.0.7 and says it was updated 14 September 2026. Use the lineup as a sourced starting point, not as a tested or universally optimal answer.
When to change the fourth slot
If your support already supplies enough recovery, Coraliz’s regeneration slot may be less valuable than additional Break or control for a short encounter. Conversely, if the enemy’s pressure prevents Thornblade from completing its skill-to-basic cycle, retain dedicated sustain even if it lowers theoretical damage. The right swap depends on whether the team is failing because it cannot create openings, cannot survive, or cannot maintain Thornblade’s rotation.
How to build around Sword Dance in a full team
Protect the setup window
Thornblade needs time to use skills before its basic attacks reach their enhanced value. Support effects should be timed so Thornblade can complete that setup instead of being forced away immediately after the first skill. A Break ally is particularly useful when an enemy’s interruption would otherwise erase the damage window.
Coordinate Break with empowered basics
Do not automatically spend every Sword Dance stack the moment it appears if a Break window is about to open. When the enemy is vulnerable, line up one or more empowered basics with that window. However, respect the 15-second stack duration; delaying too long can lose the benefit entirely.
Use forms to reduce coverage gaps
Grass is common to all four listed records, while Prismana adds Water and Thunderstorm adds Electric. Choose the secondary typing that fills the team’s matchup gap, then let the support, Break, and sustain roles remain stable unless the encounter demands a different defensive plan.

Where can you catch Thornblade?
Habitat information is not consistent across the available entries, and the discrepancy appears to be form- or database-specific:

Because these locations conflict, there is no single habitat that can safely be stated as universal for every Thornblade record. Check the current in-game Aniilog and select the exact form you want before traveling. If the Aniilog shows a different location from an older guide, prioritize the current in-game entry.
Common mistakes and fixes
Using basic attacks before building Sword Dance
Symptom: Thornblade’s attacks feel ordinary even though the character is in the DPS slot.
Fix: Use skills first, then basic attacks while stacks are active. The 180% extra damage is tied to consuming Sword Dance, not to every basic attack Thornblade makes.
Letting stacks expire
Symptom: You spend several skills but gain no empowered attacks.

Activating Thorny Defense too late
Symptom: The stance reduces little damage and produces no useful counter timing.
Fix: Activate it just before the predictable hit. The Basic form’s 30% critical-rate bonus requires Thornblade to be attacked as the skill is used, according to the official entry.
Assuming Prismana has the Basic duration
Symptom: The expected critical-rate window ends sooner than planned.

Fix: Treat Prismana’s documented 10-second duration as distinct from Basic’s 15-second duration until the in-game tooltip confirms otherwise.
Calling one lineup the definitive best team
Symptom: A copied team performs poorly in a different encounter.
Fix: Preserve Thornblade as DPS, then select support, Break, and sustain based on the enemy, your form’s typing, and whether you can consistently time Thorny Defense. The published lineups are recommendations, not universal test results.
Bottom line for building Thornblade teams
Use Basic Thornblade as a Grass DPS whose damage loop is skills into Sword Dance stacks, followed by empowered basic attacks. Prismana is Grass/Water, Thunderstorm is Grass/Electric, and Towerwood is Grass, so type and habitat answers must name the form. A Thornblade/Melloblum/Shrubclaw/Coraliz team gives you a clear DPS, support, Break, and regeneration structure, but it is a practical sourced option rather than a proven best team. Select the form and the remaining roles around the encounter, and verify the current Aniilog for habitat information because published locations disagree.
