Choose Thornblade when you want a Grass DPS whose damage comes from managing Sword Dance stacks and timing counter stances. Choose Melloblum when your team needs a Grass Support with healing and team effects, or Fragrancier when Dark resistance reduction, healing and Dark-team utility matter more than personal DPS. Those creatures do different jobs, so there is no honest universal winner.
The frequently asked question “Any reason to use Thornblade over irisalis?” cannot be settled as a direct matchup from the currently documented information. Thornblade’s official role, attributes and skills are available, but a reliable, current Irisalis comparison with matching builds, modes or performance tests is not established. The useful decision is therefore role-based: select the creature whose element, job and play pattern fit the team you are actually building.
What Thornblade is designed to do

Those numbers describe the character sheet, not a tested damage-per-second result. No supported evidence establishes Thornblade’s superiority in a particular stage, boss fight or endgame tier. How Sword Dance changes Thornblade’s attacks
One stack from every skill
Thornblade’s signature trait grants one Sword Dance stack whenever a skill is used. The trait allows up to four stacks, and each stack lasts 15 seconds. A basic attack consumes one stack and deals 180% extra damage. In other words, skills prepare enhanced basic attacks; they are not merely separate buttons that should be used without regard to the resource they create.
The practical loop
A useful way to think about Thornblade is “skill, store, then spend.” Use a skill to gain a stack, continue building stacks when the situation allows, and insert basic attacks to spend them before they expire. Four stacks are a ceiling, not a requirement to delay every basic attack. If a stack is close to its 15-second expiration, spending it is safer than assuming you will have time to build a perfect reserve.
The 180% figure belongs to the extra damage granted by the trait. It should not be presented as a complete attack multiplier, a guaranteed critical hit or proof of a particular damage-per-second ranking. Actual output will also depend on the attack being used, the target, the player’s build and the game mode.

Because every skill creates a stack and every enhanced basic attack removes one, Thornblade rewards players who watch both the stack count and the timer. Repeatedly using skills while already at four stacks can waste the opportunity to create another stack, while using only basic attacks leaves the trait unprepared. The best pattern is not a fixed button script; it is a short cycle that keeps stacks circulating during the 15-second window.

Thornblade’s counter and defensive timing
Thorny Defense
Thorny Defense reduces incoming damage by 20% while active and counters attacks during that stance. The official description also says that being attacked just as Thorny Defense is used raises Thornblade’s critical rate by 30% for 15 seconds. The timing condition is the important part: activating the stance and being attacked at that moment are linked in the documented effect.
This makes Thornblade more timing-oriented than a DPS whose value comes only from pressing attacks on cooldown. The stance has two jobs—mitigating damage and creating a counter opportunity—and the critical-rate window gives you a reason to plan your next offensive sequence rather than treating the defense as an emergency button with no follow-up.
Aqua Defense and Lockdown
The official skill listing also describes Aqua Defense as a counter stance that can apply Lockdown if Thornblade is struck at activation. Do not assume Aqua Defense and Thorny Defense have identical effects. The documented descriptions distinguish them: Thorny Defense includes 20% damage reduction, a counter and the conditional critical-rate increase, while Aqua Defense is described in terms of its counter stance and the possible Lockdown application.
What the timing requirement means in play
Neither stance is documented as a passive, always-on damage increase. Their value depends on anticipating an incoming hit and activating at the correct moment. If an encounter gives you clear attack signals, Thornblade’s kit lets you turn that knowledge into defense, a counter and—when the stated condition is met—an offensive critical-rate window. If you prefer a low-attention rotation that does not ask you to predict enemy attacks, a support or a less timing-dependent DPS may feel more comfortable even if Thornblade’s listed role is attractive.

What the other documented attacks contribute
Thorny Impact
Thorny Impact increases critical rate by 15% for 15 seconds when it hits. This is a separate, documented critical-rate effect from Thorny Defense’s conditional 30% increase. Keep their triggers straight: Thorny Impact asks for a hit, while Thorny Defense’s larger increase is tied to being attacked just as the stance is used.
Thorny Rain
Thorny Rain is a rapid attack that can be used up to three times consecutively. The three-use limit gives Thornblade a short burst sequence, but the available information does not establish its exact damage, cooldown, resource cost or place in a tested optimal rotation. Use it as the documented rapid-attack option, and decide how often to repeat it based on the live in-game tooltips and encounter timing.
Combining attacks without inventing a rotation
The available descriptions support a rotation principle rather than a guaranteed sequence:
- Prepare: Use a skill to gain a Sword Dance stack and watch the 15-second duration.
- Anticipate: When an enemy attack is telegraphed, choose Thorny Defense or Aqua Defense according to the effect you need.
- Convert the opening: If the stance condition is met, use the resulting counter and critical-rate or Lockdown opportunity as the encounter permits.
- Build and spend: Continue using skills to create stacks, then basic-attack to consume them for the documented 180% extra damage.
- Use burst attacks: Fit Thorny Impact or up to three consecutive Thorny Rain attacks into the window when their effects and the target’s position make that worthwhile.
This is a decision loop, not a claim that every fight has one best order. Cooldowns, enemy behavior and future balance changes can alter the practical sequence.

Thornblade compared with role-based alternatives
Melloblum and Fragrancier are not direct replacements for Thornblade’s job. Comparing them as if they were three versions of the same DPS obscures the choice a team builder actually has to make.

When Melloblum is the better choice
Melloblum makes more sense when the missing piece in your party is support. Its listed skills combine healing, negative-effect removal and team-oriented thorn damage. That can solve problems Thornblade does not solve: keeping allies healthy, removing harmful effects and adding utility without asking your DPS slot to perform those jobs.
Choosing Melloblum is not evidence that Thornblade is weak. It is a decision to spend a team slot on support instead of another personal-DPS pattern. If your current lineup already survives comfortably and lacks damage, Thornblade’s role may be the more relevant one. If deaths or disabling effects are the reason a run fails, Melloblum’s documented tools address that type of problem directly.
When Fragrancier is the better choice
Fragrancier is listed as a Dark Support. Its documented package includes healing, Dark resistance reduction and utility for team Dark damage. That makes it the natural fit for a Dark-focused team or a fight where reducing Dark resistance is more valuable than adding a Grass attacker.

Element and team plan should come before a generic tier ranking. Fragrancier can be the correct pick even when Thornblade’s personal DPS role sounds more aggressive, because a resistance reduction or team-damage effect can improve the group’s plan in a way another individual attacker cannot.

The available evidence does not establish Irisalis’s current comparative attributes, build assumptions, mode-specific performance or a tested head-to-head result, so it cannot support “Thornblade always wins” or “Irisalis is better.”
Questions to ask before choosing
- Do you want an active DPS loop? Thornblade asks you to create Sword Dance stacks with skills, spend them through basic attacks and monitor a 15-second duration.
- Do you enjoy predicting attacks? Thorny Defense and Aqua Defense both reward attention to the moment an enemy strikes, although their documented outcomes differ.
- Does your party need Grass damage? Thornblade’s listed element and DPS role may fit that requirement better than a creature selected only because of a general reputation.
- Are you seeking a proven matchup answer? No reliable comparative test is established here, so do not treat a community question or an anecdotal preference as performance proof.
If your answer to the first two questions is no, Irisalis may still be preferable for your own roster and play style, but that would be a personal-fit decision rather than a documented universal ranking. Recheck both creatures’ current in-game descriptions after updates before committing resources.
