Missing Nintendo’s Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 is still disappointing, but the official matching accessory can make everyday handheld play feel special. The important distinction is that Nintendo’s item is a carrying case with a screen protector, not an ergonomic grip. If palm strain is the problem you are trying to solve, you need a separate Switch 2-compatible grip accessory.
What Nintendo is actually selling
Nintendo announced the Nintendo Switch 2 – The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition for October 29, 2026. In Japan, the listed price is 62,980 yen including tax. Nintendo describes it as a Japan-only, Japanese-language system, and the announcement explicitly says: “This product does not come with a game.” It is therefore a themed hardware release for collectors and Zelda fans, not a game bundle.
The official matching accessory is named the Nintendo Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector – The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition. Nintendo lists a Japanese price of 3,980 yen including tax and the same October 29 release date. Its job is to protect and transport the console while matching the anniversary design; it does not provide the palm support of a grip shell.

Why a grip can help with hand pain
Independent testing of the Genki Attack Vector, a Switch 2 and Joy-Con cover system, found that its interchangeable grips changed the way the console sat in the hands. The reviewer said the Balance grips fit naturally into the center of the palms and that both larger grip sets made handheld play more comfortable and secure.

That improvement comes with practical compromises. The grips were initially difficult to attach, and the extra weight and leverage allowed the Joy-Cons to rock slightly in the console. Those trade-offs matter if you value a slim, rigid feel or frequently remove the Joy-Cons. A grip is a comfort upgrade, not a replacement for a protective travel case.

Choose the right accessory for your problem
If you want Zelda protection
Buy the official Zelda 40th Anniversary carrying case and screen protector. It is the accessory that matches the anniversary console and helps keep its finish safe in a bag. Check whether the listing is for the case-and-protector package, rather than assuming “Zelda case” means a handheld grip.

If your hands hurt during handheld play
Look for an explicitly Switch 2-compatible ergonomic grip case. Confirm that the product supports the Switch 2’s dimensions and Joy-Con 2 rails, then check how it attaches and whether the console can still be docked without removing it. Larger interchangeable handles can improve palm support, but they also increase bulk and may introduce movement at the Joy-Cons.
If you want both benefits
Use the grip for long handheld sessions and the Nintendo carrying case for transport. Verify the grip fits inside the case before buying; a case shaped for the bare console may not accommodate expanded handles. If it does not fit, plan to remove the grip before packing the system.

Release timing, stock and regional checks
October 29, 2026 is the announced Japanese release date for the anniversary console and the themed accessories. The 62,980-yen console price and 3,980-yen case price are Japan tax-included MSRPs, not universal worldwide prices. The Japanese system is identified as Japan-only and Japanese-language, so shoppers elsewhere should not assume that an imported unit has the same warranty, menus or retailer return terms as a local model.
GamesRadar reported the Zelda anniversary case appearing on Amazon in September 2026, but retailer stock and regional availability can change quickly. Search for the full phrase “Nintendo Switch 2 Zelda 40th Anniversary carrying case screen protector”, then confirm the seller, country, release date, current price, compatibility and return policy at checkout.

Protecting the special-edition design
The safest approach is to keep the Zelda-themed case for travel and use a compatible grip only when you need extra palm support. Choose a grip that leaves the green-and-gold Joy-Con 2 shells visible if preserving the anniversary look matters to you, and avoid products that cover vents, buttons, card slots or the console’s attachment points. A transparent or open-sided design can reduce visual obstruction, but construction quality and fit are more important than color alone.
Bottom line for disappointed Zelda fans
The official accessory can make missing the limited console less painful because it delivers the Zelda anniversary styling at a much lower listed price, but it is not the cure for hand strain. Nintendo’s product is a 3,980-yen Japan MSRP carrying case bundled with a screen protector. For genuine palm relief, pair that protection with a Switch 2-compatible ergonomic grip, accepting the added bulk, installation effort and possibility of slight Joy-Con movement.
