Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B together to reset the graphics driver while Windows remains running. Microsoft includes this shortcut in its Windows 10 and Windows 11 troubleshooting guidance for flickering, scrambled, or blank displays. A short beep or momentary screen flicker indicates that Windows accepted the reset, but it does not prove that the underlying fault is permanently fixed.

What the shortcut does

The key combination restarts the Windows graphics-driver connection without rebooting the computer. That can restore an image when the driver has temporarily stopped responding, making it a useful first step for flickering, an apparently frozen display, or a screen that suddenly goes black.

It cannot repair a failed monitor, a damaged HDMI, DisplayPort, or VGA cable, a loose connection, or every application-compatibility problem. Treat it as a low-disruption reset and diagnostic step, not a general hardware repair.

How to use Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B

  1. Leave the affected Windows PC powered on.
  2. Press and hold the Windows logo key, Ctrl, Shift, and B at the same time.
  3. Wait briefly for a beep or a short screen flicker. That feedback is normal when the reset succeeds.
  4. If the picture returns, save your work and watch for the symptom to recur.
  5. If nothing changes, continue with the hardware and software checks below rather than repeatedly pressing the shortcut.

Use Task Manager to identify the likely cause

For recurring flicker, Microsoft recommends checking whether Task Manager flickers along with the rest of the screen. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, if the display is usable.

Task Manager flickers too The display driver is probably involved. Update, roll back, or uninstall and reinstall the display driver as appropriate.
Task Manager remains stable while other windows flicker An incompatible application is more likely. Update or remove the application, especially one installed or updated shortly before the problem began.
The screen stays blank after the shortcut A connection, monitor, driver, or broader system fault remains possible. Check power and cables, test another display path, then follow driver and Safe Mode troubleshooting.

If the screen is still blank

Check power and connections

  • Confirm that the monitor is switched on and receiving power.
  • Unplug and firmly reseat the HDMI, DisplayPort, or VGA cable at both ends.
  • Try another compatible cable.
  • Connect the PC to a different monitor or television, or connect the monitor to another known-working device.

These checks separate a Windows graphics problem from a dead display or signal path. A different cable or monitor that works immediately points away from the shortcut and toward the original hardware.

Work through driver changes

If the problem started after a Windows Update, rolling the display driver back can be appropriate. If the driver is outdated or corrupted, update it; when updating does not help, uninstalling and reinstalling the driver is another Microsoft-supported path. The exact controls are in Device Manager under Display adapters; the available rollback option depends on the installed driver and its history.

Use Safe Mode when normal Windows is difficult to use

Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers and services. If the display is usable there, you can remove a recently added application or repair the display driver with fewer third-party components running. Safe Mode is a recovery step, not evidence that the monitor itself is healthy.

Choose the least disruptive fix first

Option Best fit Disruption What it can and cannot establish
Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B Sudden flicker, scrambled output, or a temporary black screen Immediate; no restart required Tests whether resetting the graphics driver restores output; it does not test the cable or monitor.
Task Manager comparison Flicker that keeps returning Low Helps distinguish a display-driver problem from an incompatible app.
Cable or monitor swap Persistent blank screen or “no signal” behavior Low to moderate Checks the physical signal path and display hardware.
Driver update, rollback, or reinstall Driver-related symptoms or a problem after an update Moderate; may require a restart Repairs or changes the software component driving the display.
App update or removal Only ordinary windows flicker while Task Manager stays stable Moderate Targets application incompatibility; it will not fix a bad cable or monitor.

When restarting is still necessary

Microsoft advises seeing whether a restart helps when the graphics-driver shortcut has no effect. Restarting can clear a deeper driver or session failure, but it should come after saving work whenever possible. If the screen remains blank after a restart, continue with connection tests, driver recovery, and Safe Mode rather than assuming the shortcut failed because it was pressed incorrectly.

Windows versions and support status

The shortcut appears in Microsoft guidance for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft’s current support information says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; the key combination may still exist on an installed Windows 10 system, but unsupported Windows installations no longer receive normal security support.

What success looks like

A beep or brief flicker is expected feedback, and a restored picture is a useful result. Neither is a published success-rate or reliability guarantee, and Microsoft provides no numeric latency or success figure for the shortcut. If the same glitch returns, use the Task Manager test and the hardware checks to identify the cause instead of treating another reset as a permanent solution.
