If a 4K UHD disc looks dim, washed out, or limited to 30 frames per second, check the HDMI format setting on the TV input connected to your player. Many televisions ship with that input in a standard HDMI 1.4-compatible mode. Switching the port to its enhanced or high-bandwidth format can allow the 4K HDR signal the disc and player are designed to deliver.
What the enhanced HDMI setting does
The setting changes how much data the selected HDMI port accepts. In standard or compatibility mode, some TVs restrict the input to older HDMI behavior. Roku’s support guidance says many 4K televisions leave the port in HDMI 1.4 mode, which can limit 4K Ultra HD HDR playback to 30 frames per second. The result may be a lower refresh rate, unavailable HDR, or a signal that never reaches the panel at its full capability.
The option is normally configured per input, not globally. You must enable it on the exact HDMI socket used by the 4K Blu-ray player. Turning it on for HDMI 2 does nothing if the player is connected to HDMI 3.
What each TV brand calls it
| TV manufacturer | Menu label commonly used | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| Sony | HDMI signal format or Enhanced format | High-quality 4K input capability on the selected port |
| Samsung | Input Signal Plus; older models may say HDMI UHD Color | Expanded bandwidth and HDR input for that port |
| LG | HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color | Enhanced 4K signal handling on the selected input |
| Other manufacturers | 4K Signal Format, Enhanced, or a similar HDMI format option | Usually a per-port high-bandwidth mode |
Names and menu locations vary by model, software version, and region. Your television’s manual is the final authority if a label or path differs.

How to enable the setting
- Select the player’s input. Use the remote’s Input or Source button and note the HDMI number where the 4K UHD player is connected.
- Open external-input settings. Look for Settings, External Inputs, HDMI settings, or a similar menu.
- Choose the enhanced format. Select Enhanced, Enhanced format, Input Signal Plus, HDMI UHD Color, 4K Signal Format, or HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color, depending on the TV.
- Turn it on for that port. Do not assume enabling the option on one HDMI socket applies to all others.
- Restart the connection if needed. Power-cycle the TV and player, or disconnect and reconnect HDMI, so the devices renegotiate the signal.
- Confirm the output. In the player’s video settings, enable 4K and HDR output. Play a known HDR scene and check that the TV identifies the incoming signal as 3840×2160 with HDR.
During diagnosis, connect the player directly to the TV. A receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, or splitter can limit bandwidth or interfere with the handshake even when both the player and television support 4K HDR.
Check the cable and every device in the chain
High-bandwidth mode cannot compensate for an unsuitable cable or an older intermediary. Sony specifies a Premium High Speed HDMI cable rated for 18 Gbps for high-quality 4K picture use. Use that class of cable when your player and display require the bandwidth, and verify that any receiver, soundbar, or switch in the path is rated for the same capability.

- Restore Standard or Compatibility mode if the screen flashes, drops out, or shows no signal, then test each component separately.
Why a 4K Blu-ray can look dim or washed out
A restricted HDMI mode can prevent HDR metadata or the required signal bandwidth from reaching the TV. The television may then display an SDR version, use an unexpected tone map, or show an unstable lower-capability signal. This is a signal-configuration problem, not something a brighter picture preset can reliably repair.
After the connection is correct, confirm that the disc, player, and TV agree on the HDR format. Depending on the equipment, the status may identify HDR10, HDR10+, or Dolby Vision. If the TV reports only 1920×1080, 30 Hz, or SDR while a compatible 4K HDR disc is playing, recheck the port setting, player output, cable, and any device between the player and TV.

Choose a neutral picture mode after fixing the signal
Start with Filmmaker Mode when the television provides it. Samsung describes this mode as watching a movie or show “without any changes to the picture settings,” and RTINGS explains that it disables extra picture and motion processing to stay closer to creator intent. If Filmmaker Mode is unavailable, use Movie or Cinema mode.
Bright rooms may call for a different preset or a brightness adjustment, but that is a viewing preference rather than a bandwidth fix. Dynamic, Vivid, and artificial enhancement controls can make an image appear brighter while moving it further from the disc’s mastered appearance. Keep HDR and SDR settings separate when the TV allows it; many sets store those controls independently.

Verification checklist
- The TV reports a 3840×2160 input while the UHD disc is playing.
- The status panel identifies HDR10, HDR10+, or Dolby Vision when the equipment and disc support it.
- The player’s 4K and HDR output options are enabled.
- The enhanced HDMI option is enabled on the connected port, not another input.
- The HDMI cable and every receiver, soundbar, switch, or splitter support the required bandwidth.
- The picture remains stable after the devices renegotiate the connection.
If the picture disappears after enabling Enhanced mode
That symptom usually indicates a compatibility problem somewhere in the chain. Turn the affected port back to Standard or Compatibility mode, reconnect the player directly to the TV, and test with a known Premium High Speed HDMI cable. Then add the receiver, soundbar, or switch back one device at a time. If the direct connection works but the intermediate device fails, that device may not pass the required 4K HDR bandwidth; consult its specifications or continue using a direct TV connection for video.
