The likely device behind this headline is Paper Boy S3, a do-it-yourself Game Boy emulator built around an M5Stack PaperS3 E Ink development kit. Coverage reports performance of 30–60 frames per second for most games, varying by title. But the available sources do not confirm that it docks into a NES controller, and Paper Boy S3 is a project rather than a finished handheld for sale.
What is Paper Boy S3?
Paper Boy S3 is a DIY emulator project that turns an M5Stack PaperS3 development board into a Game Boy-style device. The hardware is reported to use a 4.7-inch, 960 × 540 E Ink touchscreen and an ESP32-S3 microcontroller. CNX Software and Notebookcheck describe the build and its hardware.
The project uses CrankBoy, an open-source emulator originally created for Playdate. Rather than refreshing the entire E Ink screen for each frame, the display approach updates changed pixels. The active Game Boy image occupies a 160 × 144-pixel region, scaled on the board’s higher-resolution screen.

CNX Software reports 30–60 FPS for most games, not a fixed 30 FPS for every title. Performance varies with the game: its coverage describes Tetris as especially demanding and Super Mario Land as reaching the highest frame rate. These are project performance figures reported by CNX, not independent benchmark results.

CNX attributes the higher refresh performance to using the PaperS3’s raw row-and-column display interface to bypass the display’s usual waveform method. The reported range should be understood as a characteristic of this project and its game-by-game behavior, not a general performance guarantee for E Ink screens or other emulators.
How do you control it—and does it dock into a NES controller?
Notebookcheck describes touchscreen controls that simulate Game Boy buttons on the lower half of the screen. CNX Software and Notebookcheck also report Bluetooth gamepad support, but compatibility is limited; TechSpot notes that controller responsiveness and accuracy still need work.

CNX mentions the older M5Paper as a related board, but it uses an ESP32 rather than the ESP32-S3 and would require further modifications. It is not presented as a drop-in substitute. This is consequently better understood as an experimental hardware build than as a ready-to-use handheld purchase.
