To add the built-in This PC icon to a Windows 11 desktop, open Settings > Personalization > Themes > Desktop icon settings, check This PC, then select OK. You do not need to create a separate shortcut or install an app.
Show the This PC icon on your desktop
- Open Settings.
- Select Personalization, then Themes.
- Select Desktop icon settings.
- Check This PC.
- Select OK.
The built-in icon gives you access to the computer’s drives and connected devices, according to Microsoft Support. The same dialog can show other common system icons, including Recycle Bin, Network, and your user’s files. Its Allow themes to change desktop icons option controls whether themes can change icons such as This PC, User’s Files, Network, and Recycle Bin.
If This PC still does not appear
Check whether all desktop icons are hidden
Right-click an empty area of the desktop, select View, and make sure Show desktop icons is checked. This toggle controls desktop icon visibility generally; it is separate from selecting This PC in Desktop icon settings. Microsoft gives this same remedy for a desktop where no icons are visible: Find the Recycle Bin in Windows.
Check the This PC option
If other desktop icons are visible but This PC is not, return to Settings > Personalization > Themes > Desktop icon settings and make sure This PC is checked.

Desktop icon versus File Explorer opening location
These are separate Windows preferences. Enabling This PC in Desktop icon settings adds its icon to the desktop. Changing File Explorer’s opening location makes Explorer open to This PC instead; it does not add a desktop icon. Microsoft documents the latter separately in its guide to changing File Explorer’s startup folder.
Do you need to create a shortcut manually?
No. The Desktop icon settings option enables Windows’ built-in This PC icon. Windows also has general shortcut commands, such as right-clicking the desktop and choosing New > Shortcut, or using Show more options > Send to > Desktop (create shortcut) for a file or folder. Those methods are for making shortcuts to files, folders, or web pages, not for turning on the built-in This PC icon. Depending on the Windows 11 context-menu setup, Send to may be available directly without first selecting Show more options; see Microsoft’s Windows shortcut guidance.
