Touch Grass to Deploy is presented as a local Git pre-push hook that blocks a push until you provide a photo of nature. The project submission says to save an image as grass.jpg in the project root; if its local vision check accepts the image, the hook allows the push and deletes the photo. These are the author’s descriptions, not independently verified behavior.
How the proposed push gate works
Git’s pre-push hook runs before Git sends a push. The submission describes using that point to make an outdoor photo a prerequisite:
- Run
git push. - The hook checks the project root for
grass.jpg. If it is missing, the push is blocked and the terminal tells you to go outside, take a photo, save it with that filename, and try again. - If the file is present, the project says a local vision model checks whether the image shows nature, such as grass, foliage, trees, or sky.
- A positive result allows the push and, according to the submission, deletes the image so a later push requires fresh proof.
The submission’s intended ritual is intentionally playful: stand up, go outside, touch foliage or look at the sky, take a photo, and return to the terminal. It is a local developer-workflow idea, not a hosted deployment service.

What the submission says is under the hood
The author describes .git/hooks/pre-push as the interception point, verify_grass.py as the vision-check script, and setup_hook.py as the installer for repository-level or global setup. The submission says the check uses vikhyatk/moondream2 on CPU and makes no cloud API calls. It also identifies a model revision of 2024-08-26 and describes it as approximately 1.86 billion parameters. These are project-reported implementation details, not independently inspected or tested specifications. Read the Touch Grass to Deploy submission.

What to know before relying on it
- It is described, not verified here. The submission page could not be opened during verification, and the named project repository was not confirmed. The exact installation steps, current dependencies, platform support, and error behavior therefore remain unestablished.
- Offline and privacy claims need source-level confirmation. The author says inference is local and there are no cloud API calls, but those claims have not been independently checked. If image handling matters to you, inspect the implementation before using it.
- The image deletion behavior is also a project claim. The submission says an accepted image is consumed by deletion; it does not establish behavior for rejected, invalid, or ambiguous images.
- No performance or accuracy results are reported. The parameter count is a reported model specification, not evidence of measured speed or classification accuracy.
For a Git hook, the practical questions are whether setup works on your operating system, how the model and runtime are obtained, whether uncertain images fail open or block the push, and whether the hook can be bypassed. The available submission does not establish answers to those questions, so verify the current source before depending on the gate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who this idea suits
It is best understood as a humorous personal nudge to take a short break, implemented at a point in the Git workflow developers already use. It is not evidence that an organization should enforce photo checks on a team: the available description does not establish an audited policy mechanism, cross-platform reliability, or protections against bypass. No particular phone or camera is required by the described workflow; the submission simply calls for a photo file.
