If your router is set to use a very wide Wi-Fi channel, switching to a narrower width may improve reliability for devices across your home—even if it lowers the router’s theoretical peak speed. The setting is channel width. Wider channels can carry more data, but they use more spectrum and are more vulnerable to interference. The best choice depends on the Wi-Fi band, nearby networks and devices, and the clients connecting to your router.
“Faster” can also refer to a separate setting called airtime fairness. That feature changes how transmission time is shared; it is not another name for channel width. Check which setting your router actually offers before changing anything.
Why a wider Wi-Fi channel can hurt the whole network
Channel width describes how much radio spectrum a Wi-Fi transmission uses. A wider channel can carry more data at once, which is why router settings and specifications may present it as the faster option. But it also occupies more of the available spectrum and is more exposed to interference from nearby Wi-Fi networks and other sources.
Apple summarizes the tradeoff this way: “Wider channels are faster but more susceptible to interference and more likely to interfere with other devices.” A connection that is theoretically capable of a higher peak rate may therefore be less reliable in a busy environment. On a network with limited channels, using 160 MHz may also affect other devices’ speeds, according to NETGEAR’s explanation of 160 MHz channels, last updated July 7, 2025.

That does not mean a wide channel always slows everyone down. The result depends on the band, local radio conditions, router configuration, and whether each client device supports the chosen width. A router’s advertised maximum is not a promise that every room or device will perform better.
Choose channel width by Wi-Fi band
2.4 GHz: use 20 MHz as the conservative baseline
Apple recommends 20 MHz on 2.4 GHz to help avoid performance and reliability problems, particularly when other Wi-Fi networks or 2.4 GHz devices such as Bluetooth equipment are nearby. Microsoft notes that 40 MHz can provide more throughput, but may not work well with some older Wi-Fi adapters and drivers. For a mixed or older household network, begin with 20 MHz rather than assuming 40 MHz will help.

5 GHz: start with Auto; try 40 MHz if reliability is poor
Apple recommends Auto or all channel widths on 5 GHz for performance and compatibility. If you are troubleshooting an unreliable 5 GHz connection, Intel suggests trying 40 MHz. Intel also says that 80 MHz and 160 MHz may receive and create interference from more sources than 40 MHz. Treat this as a test, not a guarantee of higher speed: a narrower channel can improve stability in some environments while reducing peak throughput.

Apple’s general recommendation for 6 GHz is Auto or all channel widths. Device support and regional channel availability vary, so a setting offered by one router or client may not be available on another. Consult the router manufacturer’s current guidance for your model and location before forcing a particular width.

Check whether the setting is channel width or airtime fairness
Router interfaces use different labels and menu paths, and the headline alone cannot identify a particular model or firmware. Look in the router app or web interface for the Wi-Fi band and a setting named something like channel width, bandwidth, or airtime fairness. Confirm which band you are editing before saving a change.
Airtime fairness is a different feature. In the manual for the TP-Link Archer C2300 (EU) v2, the manufacturer describes its implementation as giving faster devices better service by sacrificing some network time from slower devices. That description applies to that model’s feature; it does not establish how every router implements airtime fairness. If the setting you found is airtime fairness, do not apply channel-width advice to it.

How to test a change without guessing
- Record the current setup. Note the band, current width, and any other setting you plan to change. Router menus differ by model, so use the manufacturer’s documentation if the control is unclear.
- Change one setting only. For 2.4 GHz, test 20 MHz if the router is using a wider width. For 5 GHz with dropouts or unstable service, try 40 MHz; otherwise, leave the setting on Auto or all widths as Apple recommends. On 6 GHz, use Auto or all widths unless you have a specific, documented reason to override it.
- Compare under similar conditions. Use the same devices, locations, test method, and roughly similar time window where feasible. Check both speed and reliability—such as whether connections drop—not just a single peak-speed result. If the concern is that everyone is affected, test more than one client.
- Keep the setting only if it helps the problem you care about. Microsoft recommends rerunning speed tests after network changes. If the result is worse or makes no meaningful difference, restore the previous setting before testing another change.
Look beyond channel width when Wi-Fi is unreliable
Channel congestion and physical placement can matter as much as width. Microsoft advises reviewing nearby Wi-Fi networks and considering channel choice; it also notes that placement and obstacles affect signal. If problems are limited to one room, a width change may not address the cause. Check whether the router is poorly placed or the signal is blocked, and assess local congestion before concluding that the widest channel—or the narrowest one—is responsible.

Test that device separately as well as the newer ones.
- Connections drop on 5 GHz: Try 40 MHz and compare stability and speed with the previous setting.
- Only distant rooms are affected: Check signal strength, router placement, and obstacles instead of treating channel width as the only possible cause.
- Other devices slow down when a wide channel is active: Consider whether the network is sharing limited channels and test a narrower width while checking multiple clients.
There is no single optimal width established for every home. Keep the configuration that works best for the devices, rooms, and reliability needs that matter in your own environment.
