Yes—you can usually share an eSIM’s mobile data with a laptop, tablet, or another phone. An eSIM is simply the cellular line providing data. Select that line for mobile data, enable your phone’s built-in Personal Hotspot or Wi-Fi hotspot, and let the other device connect. The second device does not need the eSIM installed.
How eSIM hotspot sharing works
Hotspot traffic uses whichever SIM or eSIM your phone has selected for cellular data. On a dual-SIM iPhone, Personal Hotspot follows the line chosen under Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data. This lets you keep your home line active for calls or messages while a travel eSIM supplies internet access.
The receiving laptop, tablet, or phone connects to your handset by Wi-Fi. Android and iPhone also support Bluetooth tethering, while USB tethering provides a wired alternative. Google says Android phones can share mobile data with up to 10 devices through a Wi-Fi hotspot; the actual limit can vary by phone and carrier.

- Check the phone and plan. The iPhone must be unlocked if the eSIM comes from a different carrier. Apple lists iPhone XS, iPhone XR and later as compatible examples, although regional model differences apply. Confirm that the eSIM is installed and activated.
- Choose the eSIM for data. Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data, then select the travel or data eSIM. Apple’s travel guidance allows you to select this line manually while leaving your home line enabled for other services.
- Turn on Personal Hotspot. Open Settings > Personal Hotspot and enable Allow Others to Join. If hotspot has not been configured, iOS may show Settings > Cellular > Set Up Personal Hotspot.
- Connect the second device. On the laptop or other device, open Wi-Fi, select the iPhone’s hotspot name, and enter the displayed password. Apple also supports Bluetooth and USB connections.
Set up tethering on Android
- Open hotspot controls. Tap Hotspot in Quick Settings, or use Settings > Network & Internet (or Connections) > Hotspot & tethering > Wi-Fi Hotspot. Menu names differ among manufacturers and Android versions.
- Confirm the network details. Set or verify the hotspot name and password. Use a strong password rather than leaving an easily guessed default.
- Join from the other device. Select that network in the laptop, tablet, or phone’s Wi-Fi list and enter the password. Android can also share by Bluetooth or USB.
Which connection method should you use?

For USB, verify that the cable carries data rather than charging only. A USB-C cable is useful when both devices have USB-C ports; otherwise use the correct adapter and a cable compatible with the phone.

Why an eSIM hotspot may not work
The plan blocks or limits tethering
Some carriers restrict tethering or charge extra for it. Google documents this general carrier limitation, and T-Mobile says hotspot pricing and high-speed allowances vary by plan. A travel eSIM can be data-only yet still prohibit hotspot use, so check the plan’s terms before relying on it.
The wrong line is supplying data
If an iPhone has two SIMs, hotspot follows the line selected in Cellular Data. Recheck that setting after installing or activating the travel eSIM. On Android, confirm that the eSIM is enabled and is the active mobile-data SIM.

The phone is locked or incompatible
A carrier-locked iPhone may reject a travel carrier’s eSIM. Compatibility also depends on the regional model, supported bands, and whether the handset supports eSIM at all. Provider guidance recommends checking device compatibility and destination restrictions before purchase.
The device has connected but there is no internet
- Turn mobile data off and on, then toggle the hotspot off and back on.
- Check that the eSIM has coverage in the current country and has remaining data.
- Forget the hotspot network on the receiving device and join again with the current password.
- Try USB or Bluetooth to determine whether the problem is Wi-Fi-specific.
- Install any pending carrier or operating-system updates, then restart both devices.
The connection stops unexpectedly
Hotspot sessions consume battery and may end when the phone is idle or overheats. Google recommends plugging devices in while tethering and turning tethering off when finished. Keep the phone in an area with good cellular reception and avoid covering it during extended use.

Check these details before buying a travel eSIM

Apple identifies local carriers and worldwide providers as sources for prepaid travel eSIMs, but hotspot policies are set by each provider. Do not assume that a plan advertised as “unlimited” includes unlimited high-speed tethering.

There is no universal speed, range, or battery-life figure for eSIM hotspots; results depend on the network, phone, radio conditions, and plan. Google’s platform guidance allows up to 10 Wi-Fi-connected devices, and T-Mobile describes support for up to 10 Wi-Fi-enabled or tethered devices on its service. These are platform or plan descriptions, not a guarantee of equal performance for every handset.

Use a password-protected hotspot, avoid sharing it publicly, and disable Allow Others to Join or Android hotspot mode when finished. For a laptop doing large updates or cloud backups, check the eSIM’s remaining allowance first because tethered traffic can consume data quickly.
