Oracle is rapidly turning its database franchise into an AI-cloud business. In Oracle’s first quarter of fiscal 2027, cloud-infrastructure revenue reached $7.4 billion, up 121% year over year, while total cloud revenue rose 62% to $11.6 billion. The growth is being driven by GPU-heavy training and inference services, multicloud database access and huge long-term contracts—but it is also requiring extraordinary capital spending and new financing.
What changed in Oracle’s cloud business
Oracle has spent decades embedded in enterprise databases and applications. That installed base gives it a different route into artificial intelligence than a company starting with general-purpose compute: customers can add AI to existing Oracle data and applications instead of moving every system to a new platform.
The latest results show that strategy gaining scale. Oracle’s September 10, 2026, first-quarter fiscal 2027 release reported:

Oracle said, “Customer demand for AI Cloud Training and Inferencing Services continues to grow faster than supply.” That imbalance helps explain both the contract growth and the rush to build capacity.

Why Oracle’s database heritage matters for AI
AI without a wholesale migration
Many enterprises already keep critical financial, customer and operational data in Oracle databases. OCI can place model training, inference and data processing close to those systems, reducing the time, cost and operational risk of copying data elsewhere. The practical pitch is additive: modernize an existing estate rather than replace it.
Multicloud database access
Oracle is also making its database services available through AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. Customers can consume Oracle databases in the cloud they already use, which lowers migration friction and makes Oracle part of a multicloud architecture rather than an all-or-nothing destination.

This approach is visible in Oracle’s reported product momentum. Oracle said its Multicloud AI Database grew 404% in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026. That percentage is a company-reported growth rate for the product, not a measure of overall cloud-market share.
Can Oracle compete with the largest cloud providers?
Oracle is not matching the broadest catalogs of AWS, Azure or Google Cloud on every dimension. Its strongest competitive case is narrower and more enterprise-focused:

The available figures do not provide a like-for-like current market-share comparison with the other hyperscalers. Oracle’s opportunity is therefore best judged by workload fit, capacity delivery, contract execution and profitability rather than by an unsupported ranking.
What Oracle’s $664 billion backlog does—and does not—mean
Remaining performance obligations represent contracted revenue that has not yet been recognized. Oracle’s $664 billion RPO, including more than $30 billion of new AI-cloud contracts in Q1 FY27, signals substantial customer commitments and future demand. It is not $664 billion of current-period sales, cash or profit.

Oracle must still build or secure the compute, power, networking and facilities required to serve those contracts. Delays, hardware shortages, customer cancellations, pricing pressure or higher operating costs could postpone revenue recognition or reduce margins.

Oracle’s expansion is capital intensive. For fiscal 2026, the company reported negative free cash flow of $23.7 billion. It also said it expected to raise $45 billion to $50 billion during calendar 2026 to fund OCI expansion.

Financing can accelerate datacenter construction while demand is strong, but it increases obligations before the resulting capacity produces revenue. Investors and customers should watch whether GPU deployments become productive revenue, whether utilization supports acceptable margins and whether additional borrowing remains manageable.
Oracle’s current scale in context
For fiscal 2026, Oracle reported $34.0 billion in cloud revenue, including $18.1 billion from infrastructure services. Those annual figures provide a baseline for the much faster Q1 FY27 growth rates. The contrast also shows why quarterly momentum should not be extrapolated mechanically: a single quarter’s percentage increase does not establish a permanent growth rate.
What enterprises should evaluate before choosing Oracle AI cloud
- Data location: Identify which Oracle databases and applications must remain close to the AI workload.
- Multicloud requirements: Confirm how database services will connect to existing AWS, Azure or Google Cloud environments.
- Capacity commitments: Ask about GPU availability, region, delivery schedules and scaling limits rather than relying on headline capacity figures.
- Economics: Model training, inference, storage, networking and data-transfer costs together.
- Contract terms: Separate committed capacity from flexible usage and check termination, portability and service-level provisions.
- Operational readiness: Verify support, identity controls, observability, model-governance processes and staff skills.
Bottom line
Oracle is becoming a significant AI-cloud force because it combines rapidly expanding OCI infrastructure with a large enterprise database footprint and a multicloud distribution strategy. The evidence is substantial—$7.4 billion in Q1 FY27 IaaS revenue, $664 billion in RPO, 850MW of new capacity and more than 300,000 GPUs delivered. The unresolved question is financial execution: converting those contracts and facilities into durable, profitable cash flow while funding one of the industry’s most expensive infrastructure expansions.
