Microsoft’s Surface Laptop Ultra is a new Windows system built around NVIDIA’s RTX Spark platform, with Blackwell graphics, a Grace processor and up to 128GB of unified memory. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang says the partnership took four years and several thousand engineering years. Microsoft says the laptop is designed to run AI models larger than 120 billion parameters locally, with up to 1 petaflop of AI performance.

What Jensen Huang said about Surface Laptop Ultra

Speaking at a developer event in London on 18 October 2026, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang praised Microsoft’s new machine and the engineering behind it. TechRadar reported his description of the project:

“This computer is going to be incredible – it took us four years to build it,” Huang told attendees including TechRadar Pro, “this project is really a work of love – we had several thousand engineering years dedicated to it, we build a brand new revolutionary chip, a whole new line of PCs, it’s so beautiful – you’re going to love it.”

The remarks are a statement of intent from a major partner, not an independent performance review. Huang also described a future in which an owner could text or remotely direct the computer to render images, update slides and perform other work while the machine remains at a desk. Those examples describe NVIDIA and Microsoft’s intended use of local AI agents; they are not published comparative benchmarks.

What Surface Laptop Ultra is

Microsoft opened preorders for Surface Laptop Ultra on 7 October 2026. The product is part of NVIDIA’s RTX Spark category, which is aimed at running demanding AI workloads on a personal computer instead of sending every request to a cloud service.

Component or capability Published specification What it means
GPU NVIDIA Blackwell RTX GPU, up to 6,144 cores Hardware acceleration for graphics and AI calculations
CPU NVIDIA Grace CPU, up to 20 cores General-purpose processing in the RTX Spark design
Memory Up to 128GB unified memory CPU and GPU share a large memory pool rather than using separate system RAM and video memory
AI throughput Up to 1 petaflop of AI performance Microsoft’s stated peak figure; the exact precision and workload should be checked when evaluating real applications
Local model target Models exceeding 120 billion parameters Microsoft’s claim that sufficiently large language models can run on the device
Platform identifiers N1X, Blackwell RTX graphics and unified-memory configurations Names used in NVIDIA’s product catalog for the Surface Laptop Ultra entry

“Up to” figures describe the highest configuration, not every model. Memory capacity, processor and graphics configuration, pricing and retailer stock can vary, so the exact specification must be confirmed for the configuration being purchased.

Why unified memory matters for local AI

Large models need to keep substantial weights and working data in memory. A 128GB unified-memory design gives the processor and GPU access to the same pool, which can simplify moving data between them and avoid the strict separation found in many conventional laptops. That is the architectural reason RTX Spark systems are interesting for local agents and large-language-model work.

It does not mean every model will run quickly or that every feature will work offline. Performance depends on model quantization, context length, software framework, thermals and the number of users or tasks running at once. Microsoft’s “more than 120B parameters” statement is a capability claim; it does not specify a universal response speed, supported model list or sustained output rate.

When the RTX Spark PCs became available

NVIDIA announced that RTX Spark PCs would be available on 16 October 2026. NVIDIA’s description of the category also cites up to 128GB of unified memory and 1 petaflop of FP4 AI performance for local large-language-model and agent workloads. Microsoft’s Surface Laptop Ultra is listed in NVIDIA’s RTX Spark catalog alongside the N1X and Blackwell graphics terminology.

The two dates describe different stages: Microsoft announced Surface Laptop Ultra preorder availability on 7 October, while NVIDIA gave 16 October as the availability date for RTX Spark PCs more broadly. A preorder date does not guarantee immediate delivery, and availability can differ by country, configuration and retailer.

What the computer could enable

Local assistants and agents

A local model can keep prompts and files on the computer and continue working when a cloud service is unavailable, subject to the model and application being installed. The large unified-memory ceiling is intended to make more capable local agents practical.

Creative and technical workloads

Huang’s examples include rendering images and updating presentation slides. The hardware is also positioned for demanding creative and technical applications that can use GPU acceleration. The announcements do not establish application-by-application performance, export times or sustained thermals.

Remote direction from another device

The idea of texting the laptop to perform work assumes an agent, automation layer and secure remote-access setup. It is a usage vision rather than a claim that every Surface Laptop Ultra ships with unrestricted text control over every desktop application.

Is Surface Laptop Ultra a MacBook Pro alternative?

It is a plausible alternative for buyers who specifically want Windows, local AI hardware and the RTX ecosystem, but no independent comparison with a named MacBook Pro model has been established. A meaningful purchase decision requires checking the following differences for the exact configurations:

  • Local-model capacity: compare usable unified memory or separate system and graphics memory, not just the headline maximum.
  • AI throughput: confirm whether an application uses FP4, another precision or a model-specific accelerator path.
  • Software support: verify that creative, engineering and AI tools support the laptop’s Windows and processor architecture.
  • Thermal behavior: look for sustained-load testing rather than a short peak figure.
  • Portability: check weight, battery capacity, charger size and runtime for the chosen configuration.
  • Gaming: confirm game compatibility, graphics drivers and performance separately from AI capability.

The available announcements establish the Surface Laptop Ultra’s hardware direction, but they do not provide the independent battery, application, gaming or sustained-performance measurements needed for a definitive MacBook Pro verdict.

What to verify before ordering

  1. Choose the exact memory tier. The 128GB figure is a maximum; lower-capacity versions may have a different value for local models and creative projects.
  2. Check the processor and GPU listing. Confirm whether the listing identifies the N1X platform, Blackwell RTX configuration and the number of GPU cores for that SKU.
  3. Confirm software compatibility. Ask the developer of each essential application whether its Windows build supports the laptop’s architecture and GPU acceleration.
  4. Check delivery and regional availability. Preorder and category launch dates do not ensure identical stock or shipping schedules in every market.
  5. Evaluate the workload, not the headline. For an AI agent, test the model size, quantization, context window, response speed and privacy requirements you actually use.

What remains unproven

No independent comparative benchmark, price schedule, retailer inventory report or complete application-compatibility list is established by the announcements cited here. The claims about running models above 120 billion parameters and reaching 1 petaflop are official peak or capability statements. They should not be read as proof that every such model will fit, run quickly or remain at peak speed during a long workload.

The Bottom Line

Surface Laptop Ultra is significant because it brings NVIDIA’s RTX Spark approach—Blackwell graphics, Grace processing and up to 128GB of unified memory—to a Microsoft Windows laptop. Huang’s four-year, several-thousand-engineer account explains the ambition, while independent testing will determine how that ambition translates into sustained AI, creative-software, gaming and battery performance.
