Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses combine a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera, open-ear speakers, a six-microphone array and Meta AI in ordinary-looking frames. They can capture 3K Ultra HD video, answer questions about what the camera sees, translate supported conversations and handle calls, music and navigation without blocking your ears. They are not standalone computers, however: setup, media management and software updates require a smartphone and the Meta AI app.
What Ray-Ban Meta glasses actually are
The glasses are a voice-first camera and audio companion. There is no heads-up display, so feedback arrives through spoken responses and open-ear sound rather than text floating in front of your eyes. You control the glasses by voice, with touch controls on the frame and an assignable action button.
The camera is intended for first-person photos and video. The six microphones support calls, voice commands and immersive audio recording, while the speakers deliver music, podcasts, navigation prompts and phone conversations while leaving your ears open to nearby sound.

Ask about what you are seeing
Contextual Meta AI can use the camera view to answer questions about an object, sign, scene or text. You can ask by voice and receive a spoken response. Live AI and related capabilities depend on country, language, account eligibility and software rollout, so the feature set shown in one market may not be available in another.

Conversation and text translation
Ray-Ban’s US feature information describes back-and-forth live translation in six languages. The glasses can translate spoken exchanges and help with text translation through the camera. Ray-Ban also says live translation can work without Wi-Fi for that feature, although the exact languages and behavior depend on the current software and region.
Hands-free capture and sharing
Say the wake command or use the controls to take a photo or start recording without reaching for your phone. The phone app then imports the media and provides the normal workflow for editing, saving and sharing it. The glasses are therefore convenient for immediate capture, but the phone remains part of the process.

Gen 2 versus earlier Ray-Ban Meta models
Meta’s current Gen 2 messaging highlights two meaningful changes: higher-resolution video capture and a longer advertised battery life. The official material supplied for earlier generations does not establish a directly comparable battery figure, so it is not listed as a number below.

“Up to” battery figures are manufacturer claims rather than a guarantee for every recording, call or music session. Camera use, speaker volume, network activity and temperature can reduce runtime.

Do the glasses need a phone?
Yes. Ray-Ban says a compatible smartphone and the Meta AI app are required to set up the glasses, configure settings, import and share captures and receive firmware updates. Some functions can operate from the glasses themselves after setup, and Ray-Ban specifically describes live translation as able to work without Wi-Fi, but that does not turn the glasses into an independent phone or computer.
- Install the Meta AI app on your phone and sign in with the required account.
- Pair the glasses over Bluetooth and complete the in-app setup.
- Choose frame controls, voice settings and available AI features.
- Use the glasses for capture, calls, audio and voice requests.
- Open the app to import media, share it, check battery status and install updates.
How the privacy light works
Every pair has a white capture LED that blinks when content is being captured for your gallery. Meta states that covering or disabling this LED automatically disables the camera. That makes the light a functional camera interlock, not merely a decorative indicator.

- Tell people when you intend to record, especially in private or sensitive settings.
- Do not cover the LED if you need the camera to work.
- Remember that audio functions such as calls or music can still be used when the camera is off.

What to check before buying
Choose among frame shapes and lens treatments such as clear, polarized or Transitions options, and confirm prescription compatibility with the exact configuration. Availability, pricing and stock change by region, so verify the model, seller, lens package and current price immediately before purchase through Ray-Ban’s official store, an official retail location or a certified dealer.

Limits to understand
These glasses do not show directions, captions or AI answers in your field of view. They rely primarily on voice and audio, and advanced AI features can arrive at different times across markets. Translation language lists, account requirements and other capabilities can change with software updates. Battery life is an advertised maximum, not a fixed operating time, and sharing captured media still goes through the phone app.
Best Value
- Get the most out of the moment with iconic Ray-Ban style and technology by Meta. Now featuring frames for a broader range of face shapes.
- Never miss a beat—ask Meta AI to take photos or videos, unearth information, create clever image captions or check out FAQ’s.
- Video call hands-free and share your POV so others can feel like they’re right there with you whether you’re cooking, watching a game or sharing core memories.
- Capture your world with an updated camera and built-in edit features. Take high-quality photos and videos hands free or livestream your point of view.

For someone who wants discreet first-person photos, open-ear calls and voice-driven AI without holding a phone, the glasses offer more than their conventional frames suggest. They are a poor fit if you need a standalone device, an in-lens display, guaranteed global AI features or camera operation without a smartphone-based setup.
