The most useful Gemini automations on Android are recurring digests, quick phone controls, and task capture. More advanced workflows and actions inside other apps are available only to eligible accounts and devices. Choose the feature that matches the job: a scheduled response is not the same as a phone command or an automated app transaction.
Which Gemini automation should you use?
Gemini on Android covers several distinct kinds of automation. Use this comparison to pick the right one before setting anything up; eligibility and controls differ by feature.

1. Set up a recurring morning or weekly digest
A scheduled action is most useful when you want Gemini to prepare a response on a predictable cadence. Ask for a daily overview of your calendar, to-do list, and email, or request a regular news or topic summary. Google’s example is: “Every day at 7 AM, look through my emails, calendar, and Drive, and let me know what to prioritize for the day.” If the request relies on another app, that app needs to be connected.

- In the Gemini app, ask for the digest and specify its subject, time, and frequency in plain language.
- Review the requested schedule and any connected-app access Gemini needs.
- Turn on notifications if you want an alert when the response is ready.
- Manage or remove the action if your schedule or interests change.
Scheduled actions require Keep Activity, are gradually rolling out, and allow up to 10 active actions at a time. The result is prepared ahead of delivery, so use this for digests and wrap-ups—not fast-changing information that must be current at the exact delivery time. Location-based actions continue to use the location where they were created unless you update that location or create a new action.
2. Use Gemini for quick phone controls
For a one-off request, ask Gemini to set or manage an alarm or timer, open an app, control media, or change a supported device setting. This is direct device assistance, not a scheduled action. Google says Device assistance works in the Gemini Android app. Some phone controls require the Google app, which hosts Gemini, to be the default digital assistant app; reading or replying to notifications requires notification access. Samsung and other manufacturers may use their own clock apps for alarms and timers.

If a request does not work, check the relevant permission first, then check whether the Google app is the default digital assistant for that control. The available actions also depend on what the device supports.
3. Capture tasks from a conversation or photo
When a conversation or image gives you something to follow up on, ask Gemini to add a task or reminder and name the destination app if necessary. Gemini can also show, update, complete, or delete supported tasks. Google Tasks requires Workspace to be connected; Samsung Reminder needs to be connected. Keep Activity must be on for these app connections.

For example, after discussing a deadline, ask Gemini to add a task with the date and details you need, specifying Google Tasks or Samsung Reminder if the destination is ambiguous. Check the resulting task in that app to make sure the date and wording are right.
4. Try Gemini Spark only if you need a larger workflow
Spark is a separate feature from scheduled actions in Gemini chats. It supports scheduled tasks, including time-based schedules and some Gmail or topic monitors. A possible use is a daily review of email, calendar, and Drive; another is a task triggered by a qualifying email.

Access currently requires a personal Google account, age 18 or over, a Google AI Pro or Ultra plan, and Keep Activity. Spark is unavailable in the European Economic Area, Nigeria, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. The Schedules page and manual schedule setup are currently web-only, although you can schedule conversationally in a task thread on mobile. Use care with workflows that may run while you are offline: Google notes that stopping an unintended scheduled task may not be possible in that situation. Do not schedule sensitive actions or enter sign-in or payment information in a task thread.

5. Treat screen automation as a limited beta
Screen automation can perform multi-step actions inside select apps, including examples such as booking rides and ordering food or groceries. It is not available on all Android phones. Google lists Pixel 10 models and select Samsung Galaxy S26 and foldable models among supported devices. Availability is limited to adults using personal accounts in the US or Korea; Pixel 10 devices are excluded in Korea. Device, language, app, country, and rollout restrictions also apply, so check Google’s screen automation availability and safety guidance for current eligibility.
Google’s warning is direct: “Gemini is still learning and can make mistakes, so avoid using screen automation for emergencies or tasks involving sensitive information.” Do not enter sign-in details or payment information in chat. If needed, take over and enter those details in the app yourself. Review the action rather than relying on it for an urgent or consequential transaction.
Choose the simplest automation that fits
- For a recurring summary, use a scheduled action; enable notifications if you want to know when it is ready.
- For a one-time phone operation, use Device assistance and check permissions or default-assistant requirements if needed.
- For follow-up work, connect Google Tasks or Samsung Reminder and tell Gemini where to save it.
- For a multi-step workflow, check Spark eligibility and avoid schedules that could cause problems while you are offline.
- For actions inside other apps, verify screen automation support and keep sensitive or urgent tasks under your direct control.
Most of these setups do not require buying a new phone. A compatible device matters only if you want to try the screen-automation beta, whose supported models and availability are limited.
