An old PC becomes useful when it has one dependable, always-on job. Home Assistant can run your smart home locally, Kopia can protect household files, Paperless-ngx can turn paper scans into a searchable archive, and Jellyfin can stream your personal media without a subscription for core server features. Choose one service first, give it wired Ethernet and healthy storage, then expand only if the hardware remains reliable.
What an old PC can do as a home server
These four applications cover different household problems rather than offering four versions of the same tool. Home Assistant controls compatible devices, Kopia creates encrypted backups, Paperless-ngx indexes documents with OCR, and Jellyfin serves films, television, music and other personal media.
The right choice depends on the computer’s processor, storage and the work you expect it to perform. A machine that is fine for Home Assistant may struggle with several simultaneous Jellyfin transcodes or a large OCR queue. Treat the PC as a small server: connect it by Ethernet, check the drive before trusting it with data, and keep an independent backup of both the computer and any repository stored on it.

Choose the installation that fits the PC
- Home Assistant OS: the recommended installation type for most users and the simplest route when the computer will primarily run Home Assistant.
- Container: useful when a Linux host will run several services, but it requires Docker and Linux knowledge and does not include Home Assistant OS apps.
- Virtual machine: another way to share a host, with the additional administration that virtualization requires.
The x86-64 setup needs a computer, storage drive, USB stick and Ethernet connection. A local installation does not make every device local: cloud-only products still depend on their vendor’s service. Zigbee, Z-Wave and Thread devices may also need compatible network hardware. If the PC has no built-in radio, plan for a USB coordinator appropriate to the protocol you use.
2. Kopia for encrypted household backups
What it does
Kopia creates encrypted snapshots of selected files and directories. Its graphical and command-line clients support compression, deduplication, user-controlled end-to-end encryption and error correction. You can save snapshots to a local disk, a NAS or server, a Kopia Repository Server, SFTP, WebDAV, Amazon S3-compatible storage, Azure Blob Storage, Backblaze B2 or Google Cloud Storage.
How to use the old PC safely
An attached high-capacity drive can make the computer a convenient household backup repository. Kopia backs up chosen files and folders; it is not a full image of the entire computer. The PC therefore should not be your only copy. Keep a second storage medium or an off-site repository, and test that you can restore important files.

Snapshot creation and deduplication can use noticeable CPU and disk activity, especially when a large collection changes. Schedule jobs for times when the machine is otherwise idle and monitor available space as versions accumulate.
3. Paperless-ngx for a private document archive
What it stores
Paperless-ngx ingests scans of receipts, bills, warranties, manuals, certificates and statements. Optical character recognition (OCR) makes words inside those scans searchable. Tags, correspondents, document types, storage paths and custom fields provide several ways to classify documents.
The hardware constraint is OCR
Initial OCR can briefly consume substantial CPU on an older machine. Searching and browsing documents that have already been indexed are comparatively light. If you scan a large backlog, import it in batches and expect the computer to be busy during processing.

The documented deployment uses Docker Compose, so a Linux host with Docker experience is the practical fit. Keep the document files and database on storage that is included in a separate backup plan; an archive is not protected merely because it is searchable.
4. Jellyfin for subscription-free personal media streaming
Direct Play versus transcoding
Jellyfin organizes films, television, music and other media, then streams them to supported phones, computers and televisions. Core server features do not require a subscription. When a client already supports a file’s codecs, Direct Play sends the media with little server processing.
Transcoding is different: an incompatible client forces the server to convert video in real time. That can become the heaviest workload among these four apps. Prefer clients and files that Direct Play whenever possible, particularly on an older CPU.

Hardware acceleration limits
Older Intel systems may benefit from Quick Sync hardware acceleration, and VA-API can be relevant on Linux. Actual codec support depends on the processor generation and the media format, so verify the exact CPU or GPU before expecting smooth 4K transcoding. Hardware acceleration does not remove the need for adequate storage or a reliable network.
How the four apps compare on an old PC
| App | Best use | Main load on old hardware | Extra hardware or setup | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home Assistant | Local automations and multi-brand device control | Usually light; integrations and databases run continuously | Ethernet; USB Zigbee, Z-Wave or Thread radio where needed | Cloud-only devices remain internet-dependent |
| Kopia | Automated household backups | Scheduled snapshot and deduplication work | Large local or NAS drive; independent second copy | The server cannot be the sole backup |
| Paperless-ngx | OCR and full-text document search | OCR spikes during ingestion | Scanner or import workflow; Docker/Linux host | Initial OCR can tax a weak CPU |
| Jellyfin | Personal media library and streaming | Direct Play is light; transcoding can be heavy | Hardware acceleration and compatible codecs | Old CPUs may fail on demanding transcodes |
A practical setup sequence
- Pick one immediate problem. Start with backups, documents, smart-home control or media streaming instead of deploying all four at once.
- Choose the host model. Use Home Assistant OS when the PC is mainly a smart-home appliance. Use a general Linux/Docker host when you need multiple services and can administer containers.
- Connect wired Ethernet. A wired link is the dependable choice for backup traffic, media streaming and an always-on server.
- Check and divide storage. Test the old drive’s health. Reserve sensible space for the operating system, application data and a Kopia repository; add a larger drive before importing a substantial document or media library.
- Add protocol hardware. Install a compatible USB Zigbee, Z-Wave or Thread coordinator when your smart-home devices require one.
- Protect the server itself. Keep an independent backup of the old PC and of any Kopia repository. A second disk, NAS or off-site destination protects against the failure or loss of the server.
- Test the workload. Import a small document batch, run a representative backup and stream media to the clients you actually use before committing the whole household collection.
Common failure points and fixes
Smart-home devices stop responding without internet
Check whether the device is cloud-only. Local Home Assistant control cannot replace a vendor service for a product that requires that service. For new local devices, confirm that the required Zigbee, Z-Wave or Thread hardware is compatible before buying.
Backups fill the repository or fail silently
Review snapshot retention and free space, then run a restore test. Add a second destination rather than treating the old PC as the only copy.

Paperless-ngx appears slow
Separate OCR ingestion from everyday searching. Feed scans in batches, allow the CPU-intensive queue to finish, and keep the database and media files on healthy storage.
Jellyfin playback buffers
First determine whether the client is Direct Playing or forcing a transcode. Use a client and file combination that supports the media’s codecs where possible. If transcoding is unavoidable, verify the processor generation and available Quick Sync or VA-API support before relying on 4K playback.
Which app should you install first?
- Choose Home Assistant if your priority is local automation and control across several device brands.
- Choose Kopia if losing household files would be the most serious risk.
- Choose Paperless-ngx if paper and scanned PDFs are the problem you want to solve, and you can run Docker on Linux.
- Choose Jellyfin if you already own a media collection and can keep most playback in Direct Play.
Once the first service is stable, the same PC can host additional services if storage, memory, cooling and administration time are adequate. Keep each service’s data included in a tested backup plan, and do not mistake an always-on machine for fault tolerance.
