You can make a noticeable difference to Linux Mint’s day-to-day feel without installing a new desktop or changing hardware. Use one coherent theme with fewer visual extras, reduce window animations, and trim nonessential startup applications. The first change improves visual focus, the second shortens perceived interaction delays, and the third reduces work performed at login.
Menu names vary between Mint editions and Cinnamon releases, so treat the paths below as guides. Change one setting at a time and keep a note of what you changed so you can reverse it easily.
1. Use one coherent theme and remove visual extras
Open System Settings, then choose Themes or Appearance. Select a consistent Mint theme for controls, window borders, icons and the desktop. A restrained appearance is usually easier to scan than a mixture of unrelated themes and decorations.
What to remove
- Desklets you never read.
- Applets that duplicate information already available elsewhere.
- Panel decorations, launchers and notification helpers you do not use.
- Desktop effects that add movement without helping you identify a state or action.
Keep the panel limited to the functions you use regularly, and choose a readable contrast rather than optimizing for novelty. Cinnamon 5.4 release notes describe cleaner GTK antialiasing, crisper rounded corners and GTK-based window rendering; a single, compatible theme lets those improvements appear consistently instead of mixing visual styles.

This change is primarily visual and is easy to undo: restore an applet or desklet from the same settings area, or select your previous theme. Exact labels differ by edition and version.
2. Lower or disable window animations
In Cinnamon Settings, open the Window Effects or Animations controls. Lower the global animation speed, or turn off effects that do not help your workflow. The controls and their grouping vary between Cinnamon releases.

Choose the level that fits your hardware
- Keep animations, lower their speed: preserves visual feedback while reducing the pause before a window opens, closes or changes state.
- Disable selected effects: removes only distracting transitions while retaining useful cues.
- Disable most effects: can make an older or graphics-constrained system feel more immediate, at the cost of less visual feedback.
Linux Mint’s release notes say that the default set looks cleaner and that global animation speed is configurable. The Linux Mint Blog likewise described newer animations as cleaner and Cinnamon as feeling snappier alongside performance work. These statements concern perceived responsiveness and Cinnamon engineering; they do not guarantee that every application will launch faster after one toggle.
Historical Cinnamon development measurements provide context, not a prediction for your computer. In a 200-window test described by the Linux Mint Blog, Metacity took 1 second to build the windows versus 4 seconds for Cinnamon, while recovery took 6 seconds versus 22 seconds before the cited fixes. After those fixes, Cinnamon was reported as fast as Metacity in those tests. The figures measure Cinnamon development scenarios, not boot time, frame rate or the effect of disabling startup applications.

3. Disable nonessential Startup Applications
Open Preferences or System Settings, then choose Startup Applications. Clear the checkbox beside an optional program you do not need immediately after signing in. The Linux Mint user guide explains that an enabled entry is launched automatically after login and can be disabled by deselecting it.
Usually keep enabled
- Desktop-session components.
- Network and audio services.
- Keyboard, mouse, touchpad and other input helpers.
- Update and security components whose purpose you understand.
Good candidates for manual launch
- Optional tray launchers.
- Cloud, chat or media helpers you use only occasionally.
- Applications that you would rather open on demand.
Do not disable an entry merely because its name is unfamiliar. Cinnamon-session launches core desktop components and applications configured for automatic startup, so removing the wrong item can affect networking, sound, input, updates or the desktop session. If a problem appears, re-enable the last item you changed and sign in again.

Disabling a launcher does not uninstall its application. It only means the program will not be ready in the background at login; start it manually when needed. This setting can reduce login-time work, but the size of any improvement depends on which applications were enabled and on your machine.

A safe tuning sequence
- Take a screenshot or write down the current theme, effects and startup selections.
- Remove one unused desklet, applet or decoration and use the desktop normally for a few minutes.
- Adjust animation speed one step, then test opening, minimizing and switching windows.
- Disable one clearly optional startup entry, sign out, and check networking, audio, input and updates after signing in.
- Keep the change only if it helps your workflow; otherwise restore the previous value before testing the next one.
What you can—and cannot—expect
These settings target different bottlenecks. Theme cleanup reduces visual competition, animation changes reduce interaction pacing, and startup cleanup reduces work performed during login. Official Mint material does not establish a universal percentage improvement, fixed frame rate, boot-time reduction or memory saving for all three changes. Measure your own login time or application behavior if those numbers matter, and remember that Mint edition, Cinnamon version, graphics hardware and enabled services all affect the result.

The Bottom Line
For the broadest improvement with the least risk, start with a consistent theme and fewer extras, then lower animation speed. Review Startup Applications last and disable only entries you can identify, because that change affects what is available immediately after login.
