When thermostat batteries die, the thermostat may shut down, keep controlling the system in a limited fail-safe mode, or become uncontrollable while it shuts down the boiler. The exact response depends on the thermostat model and, in some cases, its installer settings. A blank screen alone does not reveal whether your heating or cooling equipment is still running.
What happens when thermostat batteries run out?
There is no universal battery-failure behavior. Manufacturer guidance shows several different outcomes:

These are model-specific examples, not a prediction for every thermostat. Check your own manual for the warning period, what remains operational, and whether the system has a configured fail-safe.

How much warning do you get?
A low-battery alert can appear before the thermostat stops working, but the lead time varies. Danfoss documents 15 days from a low-battery warning to shutdown for the model covered by its guidance. Netatmo says its cited thermostat continues functioning normally at low battery and recommends changing its batteries within a month. Neither interval should be assumed for another model.

Replace the batteries promptly when a warning appears. The thermostat’s display, app, or manual may explain what the alert means for that particular device.
What should you do when the batteries die?
- Identify the exact thermostat model. Check the face, side, or manual. Battery requirements and failure behavior differ between products.
- Check the specified battery type and polarity. Use the chemistry and size listed for your model, and follow the markings in the compartment. For example, Netatmo specifies three new AA alkaline batteries for its cited thermostat and does not recommend rechargeable batteries. Siemens specifies two alkaline AA batteries for the RDL211 series; its instructions warn that unsupported batteries can cause malfunction or shorter battery life. - Install the replacement batteries and check the display. Make sure each cell is oriented correctly. For the cited Siemens RDL211 series, verify the date and time after replacement; its instructions say to replace batteries quickly to retain them.
- Check model-specific recovery steps if the screen stays blank. Danfoss advises checking battery orientation and describes a partial reset for its covered thermostat if the LCD remains blank after replacement. - Confirm the equipment responds normally. Check that the thermostat accepts settings and that the heating or cooling system behaves as expected. Do not assume a blank screen means the equipment has stopped.
Why might the display stay blank after replacing batteries?
Dead batteries are one possible cause, but not the only one. On some common-wired thermostats, a blank screen may indicate a system-power problem. Honeywell Home’s troubleshooting for specified TH-series models recommends checking or replacing batteries when applicable and says system power may need checking; a technician may be needed if batteries do not power the thermostat. Its guidance is model-specific, so follow the instructions for your own thermostat rather than assuming every blank display has the same cause. If the thermostat or HVAC equipment remains unresponsive after you follow the correct model guidance, contact a qualified technician. A battery failure alone is not evidence that the thermostat needs replacement.
