Boil the water, let it cool and sit for 5–10 minutes, then pour it through a clean paper or coffee filter. The Washington Post reported that this combination removed up to nearly 90% of microplastics under laboratory conditions. It is a reduction method, not a guarantee that every particle has disappeared, and results depend heavily on the water’s chemistry.

How boiling and a coffee filter can remove microplastics

The method relies on water hardness. When hard water is heated, dissolved calcium can form calcium-carbonate solids. In the reported experiments, those solids encrusted microplastic particles, making the particles heavier. As the water cooled, the encrusted material settled; a paper or coffee filter could then capture the settled solids.

The researchers, Zhanjun Li and Eddy Y. Zeng, used simulated tap water. They advised allowing the boiled water to stand for about five to 10 minutes before filtering. Because hardness and other water characteristics vary, the result in a home may be substantially different from the laboratory result.

Step-by-step: the easiest home procedure

  1. Boil the water. Use a clean kettle or saucepan and bring the amount you intend to drink to a full boil.
  2. Cool and settle it. Turn off the heat and leave the water undisturbed for approximately five to 10 minutes. This gives calcium-carbonate solids and attached particles time to sink.
  3. Filter slowly. Place a clean paper coffee filter in a suitable holder and pour the water through it. Avoid disturbing sediment at the bottom of the vessel.
  4. Use a clean container. Collect the filtered water in a washed, covered container. Do not reuse a filter that has already trapped sediment.

Boiling alone does not make microplastics vanish. The proposed removal comes from the combination of heat-driven mineral formation, settling and physical filtration. The reported “up to nearly 90%” figure applies to the study conditions, not to every tap, bottle, particle size or filter paper.

What the evidence actually shows

The Washington Post reported in 2024 that 129 of 159 tap-water samples collected from 14 countries contained microplastics in the tap-water samples it described. The same report covered the laboratory work finding removal of up to nearly 90% after boiling, settling and filtering.

The broader science is still developing. Chris Reddy, a senior scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, said, “Science takes a long time. The picture is still getting worked out.” The health effects of ingesting microplastics are not well understood, so this technique should not be presented as a medically necessary treatment or as eliminating all exposure.

A separate 2025 study in npj Clean Water reported more than 97.5% removal of particles larger than 2 micrometres at ten municipal facilities. Those systems primarily used chemically assisted granular-media filtration or ultrafiltration. The result does not establish that a household coffee filter achieves the same performance.

How this method compares with dedicated filtration

Option Particle-size information Dependence on hardness Other considerations
Boiling plus paper filtration Variable; the study reported up to nearly 90% under its conditions, with no universal size guarantee High, because mineral formation helps particles settle Low equipment cost; uses heat and requires handling hot water; no certification that all microplastics are removed
Point-of-use membrane system CDC describes approximate pore sizes of 0.1 micrometre for microfiltration, 0.01 micrometre for ultrafiltration, 0.001 micrometre for nanofiltration and 0.0001 micrometre for reverse osmosis Usually less dependent on hardness, though scale can affect operation Designed for drinking and cooking at one tap; cartridges, maintenance and product-specific claims matter
Whole-home treatment Depends on the installed technology and its rated performance Depends on pretreatment and system design Treats water entering the house, but generally involves greater installation, maintenance and wastewater or energy demands than a countertop method

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) distinguishes point-of-use systems, which treat water for drinking and cooking, from whole-home systems that treat water as it enters the house. A smaller nominal pore size does not by itself prove a product removes a particular contaminant; the manufacturer’s tested claim and certification are decisive.

Choosing a certified system when the risk is specific

If you are concerned about a known contaminant, a private well or a local water advisory, test the water first and select treatment matched to that contaminant. CDC guidance notes that home systems remove different germs and chemicals. Reverse osmosis can remove germs and some chemicals, but the exact reductions depend on the individual product’s label and certification.

Most pitcher and refrigerator filters use activated carbon mainly to improve taste and smell. They are not automatically microplastic-removal devices. Check the manufacturer’s performance statement, follow the replacement schedule and verify relevant certifications through NSF and its product database rather than assuming that a generic “fine filter” claim covers microplastics.

Practical limits and common mistakes

  • Assuming boiling is sufficient: Heat helps create mineral solids but does not independently capture particles.
  • Skipping the settling period: Pouring immediately can carry suspended solids into the filter and reduce the benefit of the process.
  • Expecting identical results everywhere: Soft water may form less calcium-carbonate material than the hard water conditions that make the mechanism work.
  • Using an unverified filter claim: A coffee filter is a simple physical barrier, not a certified specification for every microplastic size.
  • Ignoring maintenance: Dedicated systems need cartridge changes and cleaning at the intervals specified by the manufacturer.
  • Overstating the health conclusion: Current evidence does not establish that this procedure eliminates health risk from microplastic exposure.

Bottom line for households

For a low-cost experiment with ordinary drinking water, boiling, waiting five to 10 minutes and filtering through clean paper is the simplest approach supported by the reported laboratory finding. Treat the result as partial and variable reduction. For a confirmed water-quality problem, obtain a test and use a certified point-of-use or whole-home system whose documented claim matches the contaminant and particle range that concerns you.
